    PENNINGTON WON'T BUDGE

Jets quarterback Chad Pennington reportedly has declined a request to reduce his 2006 compensation from $9 million to $1 million. Apparently, there's been no counter from Pennington's camp. This means that either the Jets will keep Pennington and pay him $3 million on March 3, or they'll cut him and take a gross cap charge of $12 million -- and a net cap hit of zero.

Look for the Jets to cut the cord. Michael Smith of ESPN kinda-sorta reported during Friday's Around the Horn that the Jets will take Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler with the No. 4 pick in the draft "and start over" at the position.

For Pennington, the question becomes whether anyone else will sign him and, if so, whether they'd pay him more than what he could have gotten from the Jets. At a minimum, he's leaving a $1 million on the table. And our guess is that the Jets would have sweetened the pot, if Pennington and agent Tom Condon had shown any inclination to bargain.

Elsewhere on the team that is projected to be $26 million over the cap, it's a foregone conclusion that the Jets will release cornerback Ty Law. This will create at least $14 million in 2006 cap space, since Law is scheduled to receive $11 million on March 3 and a $3 million salary. (The move should surprise no one; the primary purpose of the contract he signed with the Jets late in the 2006 offseason was to create the impression that it was a long-term, big-money package, even though it was obvious to the trained eye that it's only a one-year deal.)

Likewise, center Kevin Mawae is in line to be released, since he "apparently" will refuse to take a pay cut.

Other Jets being asked to reduce their contracts for 2006 are running back Curtis Martin, guard Pete Kendal, tackle Jason Fabini, and receiver Laveranues Coles

    sorry if posted already

I agree with all the moves, might as well start a youth movement and let Mangini get his guys in order, it will be exciting to see what new directions we go, I am not expecting much from, the team, i just want there to be promise shown

I'd like to lose Law now, try to win back Chad and Mawae, and if they don't come down, lose Chad and work on Mawae. If we can keep someone, and give CMart something for his loyalty in the process, I'd rather it be Mawae, let him work with the new OLers and give us what he has left for the next couple of seasons.

Besides, we need some more Jet helmets in Canton. I'd hate for Mawae to go in as a Ram or a Cardinal or something out of hurt feelings for the way the Jets just dropped him cold.

Chad is getting bad advice. Must be the water.. Let them all walk the plank and be done with it. I would imagine the rest of those Jet players mentioned realizes that there's no new CBA on the table so perhaps taking the sure money isn't a bad thing.

Chad has always overrated his talent relative to his peers and his value to the Jets. He seems to still be living out his 2002 season although his actual play, due to injury and lack of talent in the booth AND on the field, relates more to 2004. Not great, not bad, just mediocre and that's being kind.

Let Chad find out the hard way exactly where his place is in the big picture just like other flash QB's found out. His head started to get pretty big in NY and now he thinks his dung leaves no scent.

Wake up Chad cause you ain't all that. You ain't won Sh't yet son and you're coming off two surgeries that would have terminated careers in baseball and a fair amount of NFL QB's.

Chad is getting bad advice??? Since when do you let someone take 8 mil away from you? This is a business first.

Those of you who think Chad isnt being a team player need to look at the numbers here. After Chad spent 3 years playing through injuries, playing through criticism because people didnt know he was injured, and generally being the face and the voice of this franchise, theyre asking him to just give away 8 million dollars. If they cant make him a better offer, then they dont want him to stay... so why would he reduce his salary to a hair above the vet minimum and stay.

If Im Condon, and I see this offer come down from the Jets, I do nothing. Because I know that the Jets, if theyre smart, know that itd be foolish to not work something out with Pennington. You let them come back to you with a more suitable opening offer, and then you start the negotiations. If they wont keep him on for more than a mil, than its in his best interests to find a new team and start over anyway.

Personally Ill be pissed to high heaven if they let him get away. It blows my mind to see people saying, cut Chad Pennington and bring in Aaron Brooks... or Drew Brees(who is also injured)... or Kerry Collins. Why does everybody seem willing to take a chance on some other teams rejects, but nobody thinks Pennington deserves a chance to come back.

Several people have said this. The Jets aren't taking 8M out of his bank acct. He hasn't earned it yet and it hasn't been paid... that's what his salary might have been for 2006. The Jets aren't going to pay him anywhere near that. Now he has two choices, (1) play for what the Jets will pay him (which i think would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $2-$3M), or (2) play for someone else for whatever they will pay him (which WILL BE less than the Jets will pay him). The smart thing to do is #1. We'll see if he's smart.

I agree with what u say, but at the same time while Im a big Cp fan, its time to let him go, and absorb the hit cuz were not gonna be good next year anyways. So next year well have some space to sign FA's and yeah i dont understand how people say to cut him and sign some more damaged goods like brees (when people say Chad has a weak arm, and brees's isnt that much better) or Aaron Brooks who is dumber than mIke Vick and throws the ball to the other team as much as his own team, or kerry Collins who plays drunk.
