Before most of you guys slaughter me for the post's title, please consider what I'm about to lay out: I have been around Jets football, definitely overly obsessed fan, since 1995 and I KNOW my team. They drive me crazy, but I still keep coming back for some reason. I've seen the same narratives play over and over and over again. In the past week, we are already seeing reports the Jets are meeting with QB candidates in the draft. For a normal team in a normal market, that's called due diligence....great idea. In our market, we already have reporters debating whether that's going to weigh too much on Sam going into the year and make him question his status. Even a late round prospect... Today, there was a fake report that Kap signed with the team--I have to admit I saw it on Twitter and was fooled for 2 mins. I thought...OH NO, Tebow all over again! Nothing against Kap or Tebow personally, but those are not the guys (publicity stunts) winning teams bring in. But what I did find amazing is how much support the idea got of bringing in someone like that....and how even right now there's a large amount of people who are pushing the Jets to consider the idea. Teams with a "Franchise QB" don't have ideas like this surrounding their organization. Jameis Winston, who in his first two years had better stats than Sam, lasted 5 years in Tampa.I live down here and can tell you that Tampa's fanbase and media is sunshine and rainbow's compared to NY/Jersey market. If Sam doesn't substantially improve this year and we are losing games, mark my words, we are going to have fans and media clamoring for Tank for Trevor or Flunk for Fields midseason. If Sam fails....is it Sam's fault? Maybe not--but it doesn't matter. This is the reality in our market and we should all know that by now. Whether we like it or not--the clock on our golden boy has started.
I'll say this. I believe in Sam. He has shown flashes of being a FQB. But, they are just that, flashes. He needs to be consistently good to great. He has been below average in his first 2 years, although it's not all his fault. His OL has been putrid and the skill position talent around him has been meh at best. If he doesn't have an average season in 2020(assuming there is a season), I'll get concerned. He should have a better OL and hopefully a new weapon or two to throw/hand it off to.
I don't believe it. I think both Gase and Douglas took this job because they can build around Sam. He's shown a lot under bad conditions. Way to early to think about that with Sam.
The "support" was all political support. These are not New York Jets fans; they are social justice warriors cheerleading for their poster boy. Disagree. We drafted a solid QB and stuck him behind the worst offensive line in football for two years.
I would agree with you--he has literally shown to be one of the greatest improvisers, beautiful throws when he's moving and love his demeanor. The other side of Sam, is his turnovers seem to be really bad and give me massive concerns with how he reads defenses. I do think some of it is due to coaching, Oline and lack of playmakers. So if we improve some of that, we could see a difference this year. On the other hand, he does miss a lot of throws he should make. I just re-watched week 1 vs Buffalo (one of our better games), and he missed several throws (including a long TD to Robby) where he had a clean pocket and loose coverage. Great QB's need to make those ones.
I don't see Sam being replaced until 2022 unless he absolutely stinks up the joint this year, which I don't think will happen. The Jets shouldn't let the media and fanbase dictate the length of their leash on Sam. They are impatient to a fault. I just want a jump in performance that many QB's have experienced recently in year 2.
A FAR bigger problem than Sam is who has been calling plays for him, on top of the lousy OL and medicocre skill players around him. It's way too early to be thinking about replacing him. I'd say if he doesn't show improvement to the point of being able to carry the team at times after 2 more years, then I would start looking for his replacement. Sam has shown a knack for making plays which shows an innate understanding of how to play the game. In contrast, look at somebody like Geno who had the physical tools but no sense of the game. Fix those other things around him and he'll take them to a SB.
A bit premature to say this, don't you think? Mayfield regressed a lot in 2019 and while Allen showed improvement, he wasn't great.
Can we wait until Allen finishes at least one season dating back to his first year in college where he completes over 60% of his passes before we enshrine him?
Thing is he's only 23, his upside is still huge. Lots of QBs don't start their pro careers until they are 23 and he's already got some experience under his belt. We need to build up that OL so we don't stunt his growth.
I’m sorry but this analysis is absolute nonsense at this stage and Is comparing apples and oranges.Neither Allen nor Baker could have done shit better behind our offensive supporting cast. I don’t agree for a second Sam was below average last year. He held his own and showed plenty of promise, never making the same mistake twice. Sam is the least of our problems.
Keep in mind regarding the week 1 game that Darnold was playing with the beginnings of mono - he just didn’t know he had it yet. Thinking back I remember he just didn't look right that day.......very sluggish.
You can't have the New York media or fans running the team anyway. If they are that dumb, that is on them. Thankfully Joe Douglas is not. They need to build a team around Sam. He has done pretty well for the little that is around him. He had mono last year, but finished pretty strong. He bounced back from that Ghosts game on MNF too, so I am not worried about Sam. He is the real deal.
Just a note, my post was an analysis of the situation rather than an opinion on Sam. I am basing my opinion off what my experience following the team has been since 95. I'm not sure if you were responding to the poster who said Mayfield and Allen were going to be in the HOF....that's not my opinion at all and I think they have their own issues. I am hoping that Sam's issues stemmed from a combo of bad Oline play, lack of weapons and possible bad coaching. IF we improve his protection, give him weapons and Gase just gets a bit more competent--he should show substantial improvement. However, if we give him weapons (i.e. CeeDee Lamb, Perriman and perhaps another RB), our Oline improves with the additions and our defense plays well--but he still plays terrible and loses us games with costly turnovers I can guarantee you there's going to be talk of going QB in 2021. This is just reality. I loved the kid coming, think he has a great demeanor about him and is very talented....I am rooting for him and I think if someone was going to turn the ship around it will be him.
I agree with you in the sense that we need to have a steady hand at the wheel, we need leadership to build this program from the inside out, we need leadership to see a rebuild through the right way without falling into the same traps of making moves just to satisfy fans. See my post above for what I'm hoping for vs. what will happen realistically if things went south
