While the Dolphins will be looking at film from our 1st game with them, they will pay particular interest to the short passing game which has looked positively dominant 2 out of the last 3 weeks. An emphasis on running the ball would seem like the obvious zig/zag this week, as the Fins will probably be stacking all eleven guys within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. But I still don't believe our running game is more than a by-product of the passing. Rather than starting out getting stuffed with 3 and outs, or risking Chad throwing a pick into a sea of dolphins, I'd like to see the Jets threaten the deep secondary on the first couple of series. It helped last week when JMac caught the 50 yarder, and it will help again.
Chad really hasn't "gone deep" much in the last 10 games...definitely not as much as the first few games of the season. Against the Vikings he had the pass to McCareins, but that was it, I think.
Not true 2-4-NYJ26 (3:53) (Shotgun) C.Pennington pass deep middle to J.McCareins to MIN 24 for 50 yards (C.Griffin). 3-8-MIN21 (6:18) (Shotgun) C.Pennington pass deep left to L.Coles for 21 yards, TOUCHDOWN. 3-7-MIN41 (7:46) (Shotgun) C.Pennington pass deep left to L.Coles to MIN 20 for 21 yards (D.Sharper). 3-11-MIN21 (6:11) (Shotgun) C.Pennington pass deep right to J.McCareins pushed ob at MIN 1 for 20 yards (C.Griffin). This was just the completions. And just the last game.
Whoever threw those must have a cannon for an arm. And I think going deep early is a good idea. Even if the coverage is good or not. The Jets can rebound from a INT if need be. Just to put the thought in the secondary's minds that the Jets might do it again.
Not in my book, but I guess that it was Jets fans have become used to with Chad. This in no way an attempt to debate arm strength. By the way did you see Cutler's 65-yard bomb to Walker this past Sunday. That's "DEEP". There aren't many QBs that could make that throw.
Per the NFL...yes How about Peyton Manning's last game? I heard the announcers praise him for dumping off the short ball all night. They said "the Great QBs" can pick apart a D with the short pass... http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/playbyplay/NFL_20061218_CIN@IND
Hopefully we go with the slants early and excel with that. Then throw a fake slant to Lauverneus Coles like the game vs. Detroit. Coles told Pennington the CB has been biting on the slant all day, and so they faked one and threw a bomb to Coles. TD. For sure Brian Schott is going to stretch the field. He knows it's an important game. We're being watched nation wide vs. a team we truly hate, plus our play-off lives are on the line.
So he completed 1 pass... BTW, the NFL has said any pass over 20 yards is considered a long pass. I guess you Madden era guys are blinded by video games.
I am more Tecmo Bowl era. However, going back to my original post of the general lack of "deep" passes, I was not referring to the NFL definition rather something more along the lines of 30+ type fly, hitch-and-go, post, out-and-up, deep slant type patterns. (I really wasn't looking to debate semantics anyway.)
Gotcha... I just am saying the pass over 30 yards happens less often than people think it does. All those sportscenter highlights.
Chad has typically had a high rating going deep. Two questions: 1) Do you know how man of these are run-and-catch versus in-the-air? 2) Of the 38 long attempts, is their a conveniently available breakdown by weeks?
Agreed. I was pointing out that from my recollection of this season, Chad was taking a good number of "shots" deep in the first few games, but hasn't really taken too many "shots" since then, especially not early in the game.
Actually, that was the first Dolphins game. No doubt they'll be ready for it this time around. But I still think Coles will get his. He tends to do well against Miami.
