I just read in the Bergen Record this morning that if the Giants ownership really wants to clean house, they probably will be interested in Scott Pioli, GM at New England and Bill Parcells son-in-law. Additionally word in New England is that Bill Belichick is unhappy with his contract and possibly he could join Pioli in New Jersey with the Giants.
I certainly wouldn't put it past Belichick to leave, since he's done it before, but I can't imagine the Pats FO not giving him the money he asks for.
I call bullshit on this rumor. I don't doubt that some of this may have come from the Bill Belichick camp, but theres no way he's seriously considering leaving New England, this is probably nothing more than posturing to squeeze every last penny out of Kraft. When all is said and done the Giants have a much better chance of prying Charlie Weis out of Notre Dame, which is who I think they're really going to try and go after otherwise they'll stick with Coughlin. They may have a decent shot at Pioli as well, but at the end of the day I think they go with Jerry Reese instead.
My take? This is just the full-of-themselves Giants thinking that everyone has a secret fantasy to wear blue.
I went back and got the exact quotes in the paper. "The disgraceful showing heated up talks about bringing in an established personnel man like Scott Pioli from New England to take control of the team. And with Bill Belichick recently refusing to comment on his contract situation with the Patriots, he could be the guy Pioli brings along as coach."
I doubt the Giants organization is the one rumor mongering, all these guys have established roots in the area and with the team and at least one (Charlie Weis) has made it known his dream job would be with the Giants. The other two is nothing more than wishful thinking however, especially Belichick, Pioli not so much. If it wasn't for the fact that he was locked up long term either last year or the year before it would be a no-brainer that he would be the heir apparent to Ernie Accorsi.
Pioli has been linked to the Giants as Ernie Accorsi's replacement for the past two seasons; wouldn't be a surprise. He is the Patriots' pro personnel manager or some BS title like that, but it would be a title leap to sign with the Giants as GM, so his recent extension means nothing. Looks like the quote about Belicheck is purely speculation with no fact or anything.
I don't see Weis leaving Notre Dame after two years. Maybe another couple of years. Especially not for this Giants team with a qb that clearly has mental issues. I know it's a job he wants but it just seems like the wrong time for him. Pioli does not have final say so the Giants could sing him but again why would Pioli or Belichek leave New England when they have the best qb in the league? You know how hard it is to find another Brady?
Pioli and Weis? Pioli and Fox? I wish, and there's always hope, but I'm not going to get too excited just yet.
These days, Weis is a god in South Bend, Indiana, and I think he's settled in for the long haul. Outside of Darin Walls, he has yet to see any of his own recruits hit the field. I'm sure he's grateful for these rumors. They'll see to it that his contract gets reworked every few years. You have to also figure that Weis looks at today's NFL and knows that the Giants position, if he really wants it, will be open again in about four years. But this cuts two ways. It also means that odds are Weis, himself, will be circulating his resume and moving four or five short years after taking the job. In South Bend, he's got a settled home for just about as long as he wants it. There's something to be said for that.
Don't believe a word of it. For one , BB does not want to share a state let alone a stadium with our fearless leader.
Didn't Weis mention in an interview last year that for at least the next decade or so he'd be sticking around where he was, because of his daughter...something about "special needs".
