Feeling very optimistic, but whatever the outcome, still believe the Jets will need to get bigger along the front of their 3-4 in 2007. Reading the Globe articles today and found this tidbit in an article comparing the Jets and Pats. Major difference between the effectiveness of the two defenses has to do with the larger size of its lineman: When Fairchild assesses the Patriots' defense, he believes the key is at the line of scrimmage. "Across the board, they're impressive when their down three are healthy," he said of Richard Seymour, Ty Warren, and Vince Wilfork. "In game-planning for the opener, we studied all summer and had great respect for them in that regard, and they were every bit as good as we thought. Very stout. "The challenge for an offense is that you're trying to get two hats on the down guys to get movement, and it's hard to get to the linebackers, because those guys tie you up and free their linebackers up. We did some real studies about the best approach to run the ball on the 3-4, and we found that New England is impressive, real hard to knock out of there."
I like the Idea of Ellis and Robertson on the outside. If we find a big plug type of guy, this D has the speed to be really really good. Vilma and Barton inside to flow and Thomas to Rush and mabye another outside guy who can run (Hobson is a stop gap who has overachieved).
Definitely don't need 3. Our line is doing a good job now. Improvement of the defense however, hinges on getting a specimen in at NT. Whether by FA or Draft, a wooly mammoth over center is the priority.
ok, so... 1) Shaun Ellis is NO Richard Seymour 2) Dewayne Robertson is NO Vince Wilfork 3) Verdict is still out on the other end position in the draft, but Ty Warren is a stud. Mangini does a great job rotating guys in and out for certain situations and most of the time he is right, that is why the line has been more successful lately.
