Hear me out. As a Turkish citizen I still have to travel to Turkey to see family. But I hate Turkish dictator Erdogan. I am pretty active on Turkish Redditt type site eksisozluk.com I curse at Dictator Erdogan left and right. eksisozluk.com is obligated by Turkish laws to provide my IP address to Turkish government. How can I hide my IP so eksisozluk.com can't share my true IP address with Turkish authorities?
VPN... they're not that expensive and provides pretty good cover for "activities" not sanctioned. I use NordVPN when I travel the wastelands of the internets..
Boss. I am a noob. Don't do these VPN's are also a risk for your personal information? They got access to your PC no? Is NordVPN reliable for my personal data?
NordVPN is very reliable when it comes to your PI and outside access. Are you familiar with how VPN works? Take a look at some of the folks that try to join the site. You'll see english names with their IP's based in eastern europe. In your case, I would route my connection through a country far from your location while in Turkey just to be on the safe side. Say, France or Spain or something like that. You actually get to choose. Your public IP address will show your VPN location, not your physical location. Its how I've managed to obtain quite a movie collection over the years..
I will give you a demonstration. check my ip address now. Then in about 5 mins, check it again.. Right now, I just routed my connection thru Canada..
If Edward Snowden can hide his extremely wanted ass that compromised America’s national security through a VPN, you can hide your mean words through one @Brook! man. I’m most curious as to what CMan is doing on the depths of the interwebs though. Edit: my company is extremely anal about security because we’re global and have to adhere to standards in 40+ countries including the EU which is the strictest. We use a VPN for a couple parts of our global system with multi-step authorization. It’s super secure.
I'm sure that someone here can help you out by piggybacking on someone who posts here. Just pick out a poster here who has made your job more of a pain in the ass than it has to be and become them when you log on to your Turkish website. I just hope it's not me.
Boss Thank you. Nord VPN it is. I looked into it and they are one of the reputable ones. Asked a few techie friends in Turkey and they also recommended it. I got the 2 year plan at $89 for 2 years. Until then, this motherfucker dictator will be gone and I won't renew.
UR Welcome Brook. don't forget to set it up to kick in when you log on your laptop. If you forget, the Overlords will make you famous..
Thanks Jack for the warning but what does that even mean? I am a noob when it comes to computers etc.
A VPN is nothing more than a logical point to point tunnel between two logical endpoints and it doesn't necessarily have to be encrypted. That's a common misconception that it has to be. Of course the VPNs you buy from providers will offer encryption. But I have bad news. End-to-end encryption only protects you from eavesdropping from the middle. What I mean is, if you encrypt a message and send it across a link, anyone in the middle will not be able to read what you said about the dictator(unless they have your key). But if they are able to compromise your end device (phone, laptop, etc) then the encryption simply means nothing. And hacking end devices, especially consumer phones is as easy as 123 for government entities these days. My advice is don't get caught up in the technical details too much if you don't have to. Post nothing from your personal phone or laptop that you don't want others to see and you'll be fine.
Too many exit nodes compromised at this point. Tor was decent security in 2013 or so but it is probably not safe now. Randomly unsafe that is. The commercial VPN's that are not government actors in disguise are probably a better bet. This is because they actively safeguard their exit points. Tor is more like a volunteer actor that relied on millions of potential exit nodes and cross-referencing those exit nodes to prevent duplication. A decade on and lots of those nodes are compromised and if you get two compromised nodes in a pattern you are trackable and the people who compromised the nodes are actively watching for passers-by.
