I think Simms is more on the mark than not. Obviously, he takes it a bit overboard but he's in the content creation game now and that's part of it. There's nothing wrong with highlighting that Zach is 4-0 as a starter and we should be happy but there's also nothing wrong with pointing out that he's made some mistakes along the way. Granted, those mistakes aren't interceptions right now which is absolutely a positive and progress for Zach. Like he said in the video, "...a young QB like Zach Wilson usually would've thrown 3 INTs in a game like that...", as much as people don't want to hear things like that, it's progress. Slow progress but progress nonetheless. However, I also don't think there's anything wrong with fans expecting more out of the guy that was picked 2nd overall last year. We're only 4 games into his 2nd season so there's no reason to push the panic button on Zach. He's got plenty of time to develop and the best thing is, it actually looks like we've got competent people in charge for the first time in over a decade. So yes Jets fans, let's enjoy this start, we haven't started a season 5-2 since 2010, and let's also hope that Zach, MLF, and Calabrese continue to put in the work so that Zach can realize his full potential.
I have tremendous faith in Joe Douglas he's hit a lot of homers with his picks and trades. Sometimes it takes a little longer for the cream to rise to the top. But, I think Zach will be fine.
While Simms has a point that a lot of Jets fans exaggerate and make up flaws it was not a good game for Zach. He needs to play better with more poise and confidence. Yes, he did not lose either game and he is doing what he has to do to win but these have been 2 subpar games. Pavia and Nania's takes were a lot better. Although Simms review of the ignorance of Jets fans was spot on. Simms should continue to review Jets fans every week.
I hate this idea that if you've been disappointed in how Zach has played, it also makes you unhappy about being 5-2. No Jet fans are unhappy about how the current season is playing out. This is the most fun I've had watching football in years, but seeing Zach miss wide open passes can be very frustrating. I'm probably a little overhyped on the team right now, but this could be a championship level defense. The number three team in the AFC is up for grabs right now, and I don't see why it can't be the Jets. I don't think they'll be able to get there if Zach is playing like he currently is. The next few games will be nice tests. They're good pass defenses, but nothing like Denvers. I'm hopeful Zach can get there, and I'm rooting for him. He seems like a good kid. But the winning window opened a bit sooner than I was expecting and Zach needs to step up his game.
When you throw the ball so little every throw becomes amplified. At Pitt he threw the ball 36 times and the magical 4th quarter. What he did before that did not really matter. Do other teams go through every throw a QB makes?
If you have been disappointed can you be a little more specific? What game? How many wide-open throws has he actually missed on the other hand how many tight window throws has he made? When did he miss them what was the consequence of the missed throw was he under pressure when he missed the critical throw? People do understand that most QB's miss throws to wide open receivers Please provide some context for your disappointment.
He has to back him. He was the one who gave effusive praise to Zach coming out of the draft as the next great one and many of you on here fell for it. I still laugh at those here who think Chris Simms is a QB whisperer.
To me the biggest things I look for in the development of a young QB. 1. Does he limit the mistake- You can't win games in the NFL throwing Picks, Fumbling and taking Sacks. - Don't lose the game-Most young QBs lose the game-That is why we played like we did against Miami and Denver. Their young Qbs lost the game. (Context) 2. Does he come up big when you need him? - Zach has played his best football in the fourth Quarter 3. Consistency- Zach is very inconsistent 4. Carry the team- Zach is not ready to carry the team. On a side note scoring is way down in the NFL this season.
I'm not going to go through every throw that has disappointed me so far this season. I don't want to derail this discussion. I counted 4 or 5 missed wide open passes in the Denver game alone that should have been completed. To me, I have not seen any improvement on last season, and that worries me. Hopefully with some slightly easier defenses coming up, he starts playing better. Nothing would make me happier. Let me ask you a question. Since we're specifically talking about Zach's play, if the Jets were 2-5 right now, would you be happy with how he's played?
So you can provide no context and only site one game then throw me a hypothetical. Your question is impossible to answer because context does matter. what game, what situation? Zach's job is win the game and play well enough to do that. He has played well enough in every game to win. It is impossible to answer your question except to look back at games and extrapolate how the game plan would have changed if we were losing or behind in games. The one time in four game Zach was asked to win the game he did. It is a horrible question. The reality is he has cleaned up is short-game accuracy and I think the ball Braxton was a great example. His mobility has changed the way the Jets play (Did anybody watch the first three games) go back and watch those games then you might appreciate Zach's escapability more. He has not made the critical mistakes. Zach's has played in four games this season and has played well in three and did not lose the game against a defense in mile high that has made every QB they have played look bad ( Outside Geno Smith ironically enough). Zach is 17 games into his career give the kid some time to develop. His completion percentage is over 60% for the last three games. I just think our expectations are way to high. It is hard to play QB in this league. Burrow struggled at the beginning of the season, Rodgers is sucking this year, Denver made Herbert look bad. Mac Jones has been benched, Lawrence has been up and down, Fields has been struggling. Defenses have figured out how to counter these new-fangled offenses (Especially with all the injuries to o-line men) which is why scoring is down. Outside KC and Buffalo the teams that are winning are playing like the Jets.
While I agree you with that Simms might be loudly backing Zach now because of his earlier take I think you mischaracterize Simms liking Zach as some kind of outlier. Zach was everyones number 2 choice. This was a 2 QB draft class and there was not another prospect close to Lawrence or Wilson. Albert Breer surveyed 23 NFL FO's before the draft and every single one had Zach as the number 2 prospect. Simms take was the same take as everyone else he just got his out a little bit earlier and louder. The only ones that were not on board was the non-football mainstream clickbait media like Kiper.
As I said, I'm not going to go crazy explaining to you why I have been disappointed watching him. There are one thousand other Zach Wilson discussions that can do that. You have your opinion and I'm not trying to convince you to change it. In fact, I appreciate that you take such a deep dive into every one his throws. Right now, I see a very similar player to last year. These next couple of weeks are going to be huge for my opinion of him. Maybe you're right in that my expectations are too high. I expected a middle of the pack QB this year. Anywhere from 13-20. I don't believe I have seen that yet. That's not to say by the end of the year he won't be there. The defenses he's playing going forward aren't nearly as good as GB or Denver. I am not super confident that he takes a large jump. I'd love to be proven wrong, though.
That is your right and I am glad you are open minded. I think Zach has been middle of the pack. He is far from elite at his point. Like you said we will see. The injuries on the o-line concern me. Zach's numbers are elite with a clean pocket. Zach needs to calm down as well.
I hear you but I wanted nothing to do with Zach. I would've much rather gone the OL or skill position route in that draft and find a game manager veteran QB somewhere. I'm not mischaracterizing Simms, rather I'm saying I don't have much faith in his evaluation takes. It seems like many posters here, and younger fans in general, eat whatever's thrown at them now if the guy's loud or a big enough talking head or gets enough airtime. Too many talking heads have platforms these days. I prefer quality over quantity and there's not many good ones out there.
I'm a little worried about Zach, that doesn't mean that I think he sucks or that he'll never be a FQB, it just means at this moment I'm a little worried. I would think even the biggest ZW supporter would have to feel the same.
Someone like Geno Smith? Jets fans are a big reason why we are unable to develop a successful QB. We give up on them almost immediately.
I agree with you that we should not listen to the loudest talking mouth as they are in the business of getting people to listen to them first but not neccessarily being right. But the point is Zach was rated highly and one of the best QB prospects in a long time was made not just by the talking heads but by all NFL scouts and NFL FO's. There was a quite clear consensus that Wilson was an extremely good QB prospect. Some people are trying to rewrite history and pretend that Wilson was not a highly regarded QB and that it was a media fabrication. Actually just the opposite the only people that did not hold Wilson in high regard was the mainstream ESPN media that was attempting to stir controversey for page hits. Again, Albert Breer surveyed 23 FO's and all had Wilson as the number 2 prospect quite close to Lawrence in terms of grade. To pretend that Wilson was not an exceptional prospect and highly regarded and blame Simms is completely false and wrong. Now there were people on this board that advocated for trading down and accumulating a hoard of draft picks. I said then and will say it today that their argument was a logical and valid argument that had merit. That argument is valid only because Wilson was so highly regarded and would have returned a king's ransom. But the other argument that you take an elite QB prospect when he is available also has merit as well as those opportunities do not come often. You can make an argument for both. But again to say that Simms is the reason that Wilson went number 2 or the reason that many fell in love with Wilson is crazy. Simms was not the first or even biggest media name to jump on the Wilson bandwagon. That honor belongs to Tim Jenkins arguably the best QB media guru out there.
