Thought I'd post some thoughts on the year, before putting the season to bed. - As a diehard sports fan who has become disenfranchised by all pro sports due to getting close to the businesses and the people, the '06 Jets are a team I am proud to root for. We have players of character, who play hard, play together, and play through tons of adversity. We have a front office that manages the business well, finds talent, and meshes with the coaching staff. We have a coaching staff that puts schemes in place to maximize the talent the front office gives it. I'm very proud to be a Jet fan, and proud to root for the people in the organization. - We exceeded expectations this year. As a fan, that's what you want. For todays playoff game, we were beaten on the road in the trenches by a better team. On to the future - QB. I go back on forth on this one like a see-saw. On one hand, 90% of the QB's in football would not have got this team to the playoffs. Offensively, our scheme was predicated on a QB that read the defense and adjusted accordingly in real-time. This mitigated a weak run game, weak run blocking, a weak arm, and above average talent at the wideouts. On the other hand, Chad just can't do it as-is against top defenses in big games. The game that Chad plays is deliberate, and requires a better run game to set him up. My instinct says that without a power game, Chad won't win the big one on his own. I believe the FO will stick with Chad and boost our run blocking and run game, to compliment Chad's rare assets and mitigate his weaknesses. - RB. Leon will ultimately play the role of Kevin Faulk (who's been a vital cog in 3 SB's). Houston might be OK with a better line, but we'll need a better running back. - WR. Definately a highlight. Jerricho and Laverneus were incredible making plays in traffic and making plays after the catch. McCrapeins was OK as a 3rd option. Brad Smith probably needs his own position heading - he was a revelation, proof of functional management, and looks to develop into a legit slot receiver who will drive defensive coordinators crazier than Randle-El does. I think Pennington needs another big option - Randy Moss as a 3rd or 4th receiver would help Pennington immensely, though that's a risk and pipe dream. - TE. Baker was underused this year. He's a good blocker and a good receiver. We're set at this position. - OL. THere's a lot of potential here - but the Pats today showed us what a dominant line means. I expect that Mangini and Tannenbaum will identify solidifying the right side of this line as a priority, and adding dominant run blockers to get the push. Mangold was a steal and is everything John Abraham is not. D-Brick is a rookie, the sky is the limit (plus he has room to fill out), though he'd better learn from that backwards pass mistake. - DL. Another area that must improve. I think Ellis had an OK year, and Robertson, at times, lived up to the #4 selection. We need another big end if we're going to continue the 3-4. If the 3-4 is a priority, we need think through the mismatch of Robertson playing the NT - perhaps his year gives him #1 pick trade value to a team that plays a 4-3. - LB. Solid, very solid. B THomas' year was another proof point of Herm's incompetency. Vilma's still a star, though maybe worth more in a trade to a team playing a 4-3. Barton's great, though still does some idiotic things. I felt Hobson fit the D extremely well. - CB. A shutdown corner would sure be nice. Barrett has impressed me for quite some time. Mangini corners tend to play well, regardless of who they are, so I trust the coaches to do well with whatever they have. Poteat though, almost gave up some big plays. Getting killed in the secondary against the Pats was a factor of their dominant OL, rather than poor coverage. - S. Coleman will do, he's not horrible. Kerry Rhodes is a star. Whatever 'it' is, he has it. The guy will be making plays for quite some time. - K. Nugent's year is the final straw in showing us that Bradway was an _excellent_ talent evaluator, and that the problem was Herm's inability to recognize and get the most from his talent. OK - this season's put to bed. I'm very excited for Mangini / Tannenbaum era, and I hope Woody has the sense to do everything in his power to make the Jets as stable an organization as the Steelers have been and keep those 2 around and motivated for a long time.
how much money do you all think it will take to sign adalius thomas, michael turner and asante samuel in the offseason in total?
Michael Turner and Asante Samuel should be on the Jets radar in the offseason. Especially Michael Turner...not only do we need a RB, but we also need a playmaker and he fits the bill. He and Leon would compliment each other perfectly.
thing is i don't want to overspend...i hope those 3 come cheap otherwise gotta find the players in the draft...
Free agency is all about spending money...players are looking for alot of money and tend to go to the places offering the most money. Asante Samuel is going to demand a big time deal...
yes i agree but you also don't wanna throw money at players like the giants did and commit to them long term...
I certainly don't want the Jets to go on a shopping spree, but adding a big time free agent will certainly not kill us. I don't think Samuel is a player we MUST have, but it wouldn't hurt to have another starting CB to play opposite Dyson who knows alot about the Pats.
RB is a priority. The OL is a much bigger priority, as it makes up for other defeciencies. Before Dillon and Maroney, the Pats won the SB with Antowain Smith and Kevin Faulk. The line made the holes and gave Brad the time. Our cap situation hopefully allows us to address both.
