Not a fan of that kind of move. The team is 7-8 with two games left, something we all would’ve signed up for in August. The QB play from Zach Wilson is the reason this team isn’t 9-6 or 10-5. His sheer ineptitude cost the Jets 4 games this year.
If I were Payton, the Jets would be one of my first choices. Fixing our problems are super-simple - particularly if you're mostly concerned with a short-term fix (and you are already a Super Bowl winning coach) ... 1. Sign Aaron Rodgers. If Rodgers won't come, sign Tom Brady, 2. Spend all your draft picks on offensive linemen and finally fix the problem, 3. Try to trade Zach Wilson - if you can't, cut him. That's it, that's your solution if you're Sean Payton.
I think Saleh worked magic to get this team to 7 and 4 despite sub-adequate QB play. The problem was that instead of getting any positive progression from the QB spot, we suddenly had a major regression in Zach's play. Add in two punt return TDs and a potential game winning TD drop by Berrios and the teeter totter suddenly came crashing down. That is not to mention injuries. Every team will get them, but the snakebit Jets lost our two of our three best offensive players the same week and later a QB who was finally performing. Not to mention tatters in the O line. It is not so much the number of injuries that we suffered, but the quality of the players that got hurt. I think Saleh has absolutely earned another season................this time with a real QB before he can be properly evaluated. And, yes, if he doesnt fix special teams and we lose another game on a punt return TD - fire him on the spot !!!
I wouldn't be interested in Payton unless he got full control The only way to cut through a broken org chart in the time we need it done is for somebody to come in and slash and burn and hack until the Jets resemble a successful professional football organization. Half measures are just going to lead to half results and could easily make things worse. Hire Payton and let him hire a caddy GM and redo the football organization from top to bottom in the process.
I'm telling you people that Sean Payton will not be coming to the Jets. As others have mentioned, he will want total control and Woody will never let that happen. Also, this team is where coaching careers come to die. I don't see it happening.
Woody Johnson is 75 this year. He's getting close to Leon Hess 2 years and out territory. I'd be planning to give a professional full control of the organization at this point. Dramatically increases the odds he actually brings a Super Bowl trophy to Jets fans before he goes.
Of course he's not coming to the Jets. I'm saying it would be good if he did come to the Jets and that all parties should want it.
Offense or defense doesn't really matter these days. The offensive minded coaches seem to flounder just as much if they aren't head coaching material. A good coach understands the entire game regardless of what side he came from.
I hear Adam Gase is free. seriously people are still on about “offensive” head coaches as if that matters? Zach Wilson doesn’t suck because of Saleh.
Chargers are as good or better than the Jets and have a proven QB. Not sure why he’d pick the Jets over them.
The only reason we're even entertaining a HC switch is because of the way Saleh has handled and continues to handle ZW as though he's a reasonable choice at QB. It's got to be obvious in practice and meetings that ZW sucks--why the charade? It's obvious he doesn't understand shit about defensive patterns among a host of other issues and we only see him on Sunday.
I rather give Saleh another year to be honest. He earned my trust. Give him a QB and let’s see what we will do.
We cant like Saleh's handling of Zach, but he may have been under directive from above to find out if Zach will be the long term FQB. So, I will give Saleh a pass on that one, but CLEARLY, Zach cannot take another snap this season. Absolutely have to start Streveler if Mike isnt ready. Zach almost certainly has no future here, but nobody has confidence in him and that will not be rebuilt on the fly by playing him again this season. There is only more damage to be done. Zach needs to start from scratch in the off-season and lets just see if against all odds he can prove himself viable in next year's camp.
Payton only makes sense if we have a Franchise QB in place. He wasn’t any better than Saleh when he didn’t have Brees. If anything he would get exposed here. As disappointing as this season has become, we’re still ahead of schedule. Just stick with Saleh for now and let JD do his thing in the draft. I’m sure he’s hell bent correcting his Zach mistake and won’t make the same mistake again with the next QB.
We are likely a year early for Payton as I would doubt Saleh is getting fired this year and Payton will be a HC again this year, likely at least. I think Saleh is becoming a good coach but I’m not sure he’s there yet whereas I’m sure Payton is a great coach so I wouldn’t be upset, just very doubtful it would happen.
