No one there besides rod smith has taken the hits coles has. Galloway and Keyshawn are one-dimensional receivers.
Your reasons are TOTALLY VALID. Look at what great teams do year after year-- they go for best player available. The draft isn't always about next year, it is about the long term good of the team as well. What is worse, drafting Dwayne Jarrett at 25-26 who may be underused for a year or two, but a top 10 talent, or reaching, and taking the 5th best LB because we think that is the more important spot for next year?
I agree, Dallas Baker would be a nice addition and should be available in round 3. Baker's size would be a nice combo with Coles and Cotch. I expect J Mac and Dwight to be gone. I have no problem with adding a receiver in Rd 2 or 3, as long as we get some needed help in Free Agency in other areas. BTW, I had Dallas Baker in my Mock, I made over a month ago, in Rd 3. http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=15142
i say Robert Meachem, he is the best deep threat in this draft.... yeah i said it, him and Desean Jackson were the 2 best deep threats, if we get one deep threat reciever, wait until the 5th-7th, and get Meachem
gonna go on a limb here and say that next year will be coles last with the jets..... a combination of factors will be the cause of his demise. i think contract issues, age and loose lips will get him in the doghouse with mangini and tann. remember the pats and how they conduct business. jil
Hell NO!!! We have more pressing needs. We need a RB, DT/NT, a LB and a CB, WR is NOT a pressing need. We have Cotch, Coles, Smith and we can get a wr later on the 2nd day or in FA
The Jets signed wide receiver Frisman Jackson, who played 34 games for the Browns from 2001-04, to a reserve/future contract. ... Former White Plains standout Art Monk, who played for the Jets in 1994 after 14 seasons as a Redskins wide receiver, is one of 17 finalists for the Hall of Fame. Monk has been eligible for seven years.
If there aren't any DT/RB worth taking, than sure. I think we'll go with BAP with one of our 2 2nd round picks, and if that happens to be a reciever, than thats cool with me.
Dwayne Jarett Ted Ginn Robert Meachem Sidney Rice Those are the only recievers i could see maybe falling to us with our 1st rounder and our 1st 2nd rounder, i wouldnt mind if we toke one. Though id rather have defensive help like Woodley and Okeye with our first two picks.
There are only a few positions that we are set at and shouldn't draft. WR we are very good at, but it is not one of them. I'd say the only positions we could legitimately, intentionally avoid would be SS, OC, LT, QB, P, K. Otherwise, with the right player we could def. improve.
I'm not going to flame you for suggesting such a thing but here is why this will almost certainly not happen. From what we saw with this last draft with Tangini is they are smart. By that I mean they realize that a good football team starts from the core and then branches out. We started it on the offensive side of the ball last year getting a LT and C and this year I believe it will be a solid NT for defense. Obviously this philosophy can be thrown out the window if you are staring at a Calvin Johnson or something at our spot (will never happen) then you go for it, but we shouldn't trade up this year let alone for a wideout.
A few things here 1. If guys like Ginn and Jarrett fall, then I think its pretty safe to say that the DE/DT/OT will go earlier than expected. 2. I don't think its fair to make blanket beliefs about the Tangini philosophy after only one season. If you want to take a look back at what the Patriots have done, you can argue that they believe strongly in BAP (see Ben Watson just two years after taking Daniel Graham). 3. With the amount of needs and limited picks they have, I agree that the Jets probably shouldn't and likely won't trade up. If a Ted Ginn or Dwayne Jarrett fall into their laps at #25 though I think it's a no brainer, especially if McCareins is gone.
I wouldn't take a receiver round one. We have too many needs to fill and too many places that need upgrades. We have a great WR tandem in place, and if McCareins stays, we have 3 solid players there. If you want to grab a guy in a middle round to compete with Smith and Dwight, I'm fine with that. Give me a DT, DE, 3/4 OLB, OG, RT, or HB in round one and our first 2nd rounder barring something ridiculous happening.
Next year is likely Coles and Chad's last year with the team. Coles is getting old and couple that with concussions and he is likely to go down the tube very fast. Chad, I believe has a huge bonus do the year after next and if Clemens shows he's the QB of the future Chad will be gone and that alone will be a huge problem with Coles who at that point will be 31 with a ton of mileage on him. McCariens will be cut because of his bonus and since he likely will get an opportunity to start elswhere for the same money, he probably won't resign with us? The question is what do with have in Smith? We do need to draft a WR of the future which will be needed in 09. With the other needs we have it will probably be after the 2nd round. If they think Smith is going to be the answer next to Cotch it will be a second day pick.
