Yup....Zero speed on the Perimeter. Coles, Cotchery, and someone like a young Randy Moss (Tall, and 4.4 speed or better) would make the offense work....
Oh my god ,I know your the infinite master of knowledge as your TGG tilte states, but holly cow are you kidding me? An average reciever puts up 600-800 yards a season if not less ,our boy's put up Keyshawn/Crebet numbers. During their reign they werent concidered average recievers. I think they are far from average. Coles was on the leader board for half the year in receptions and TD's ,he did taper off at the end .
Speaking of getting rid of Pennington, has Mangini stated himself that CP has the starting job going into next year? I thought I had read that it would be like all other position, where whoever is playing best will get the job. The only people I've seen stating it's CP's job to lose are writers and fans.
We have no running game, and we use our short passing game as a running game. Because of that, our receivers will have more catches and a bunch more yards. Look at the yards per catch.. Coles 12.1, Cotchery 11.7. That's not terribly impressive. Cotchery catches that screen a couple times a game, as did Coles early in the season. They both had 6 TD catches.. nice, but not overwhelming. Let's put it this way.... you're the opponent's D coordinator.. are you scared that either of those guys can change the game? I'm not. Not throw a speedy receiver in there, and wed have a nice batch of receivers. Calvin Johnson (I think that's his name, from GT) would be awesome, but I know he's going in the top 5. Jarrett from USC... Im not as sure... He may be just another WR like we have, but he certainly makes big plays in college. As for my title... that was assigned to me when I won voting on the subject.
Mike Tomlin? What's the fun in that? Better than Shottenjunior, obviously. But I'm still hoping Mora, Jr. winds up in Miami. He's much more of a fun personality/train wreck/crappy coach.
JI I have to respectfully disagree. I don't understand how a tandem with over 170 receptions, over 2000 yards and 12 combined TDs constitutes as "average." Coles has been good his whole career. Not great, not average, just a good receiver. I personally think it's your "I never liked the guy." comment that gets me thinking you don't want to give credit to him. These two guys moved the chains, playing to Chad's strengths in the 10-20 yard range because he obviously can't just air it out and let Cotchery or Coles use their speed and stretch the field on a consistent basis.
Hit it on the head... there are team without one 1000 yard receivers... we have two... that's far from average....
Yeah, seriously, his know-it-all attitude is just fucking annoying sometimes. I can respect his opinion, but he just comes up with any little reason to dislike each Jet on the team.
Well, Cotch got 960, close though:smile:. Heh, it's not that. But if you're going to throw out their YPC, consider the offense. Most of it was Chad throwing it 5-7 yards and letting them make the plays. The occasional 20+ yard pass, but more often it was 7-15 yard passes, Schottenheimer just did a good job playing to Chad's strengths and the receivers did great in their role. Now, with a strong armed QB who can let their receivers go deep on a consistent basis(Clemens?) then you'd see these guys averages go up, at the very least their big-play ability.
I doubt this happens, but if it does I have confidence in Mangini to find another great signal caller.
Schottenheimer wasn't even that great. I hope he doesn't leave to Miami because of the division and continuity factors, but it's not like this guy is amazing. He's just alot better than Hackett, who was what we were used to for 5 years. Heimerdinger doesn't count.
Nobody has said he was "great." But considering the question he had at Quarterback, NO running game to speak of, 3 new offensive lineman, including 2 rookies on the most demanding positions on the line. And an unproven but high potential(at the time) Jerricho Cotchery... You have to admit he did a very good job, and the playcalling WAS NOT predictable, their was some trickery, and he spread the ball around to everyone. And not to mention he high he is on Kellen Clemens with his intangibles and smarts for WCO...Give the man hid credit, he did a very good job, exceeded expectations by a mile since this was his 1st OC job being 32 years old.
If its worth anything Peter King just said that Eric Mangini and the Jets love him to much to let him go so....
As a person, I have no problem with Coles. Seems like a good guy, and I feel bad for what happened. Trust me, thereis no bias against the guy. As a player, I do not really like him, hence average in my mind. He's lightning fast (or was before the toe injury) running without his pads on, but on the field Cotchery plays as fast if not faster, and that's not saying too much. Neither of them have speed. This is why we bring McCareins in for that 1-2 throws a game where we try to stretch the field. Sure, Pennington's arm has a lot to do with this, but I think we could have Cutler (best arm I've seen in a while) and our 2 main receivers couldn't stretch the field. Coles just comes up small in big games too often for me. As I said in my original post, while Cotchery is not there yet, he has a chance to move beyond average. He'll be there, as I am impressed how he came on. As for the #s, everyone knows I do not use #s alone to judge players. I don't care how many receptions they had. We didn't have a running game, so 1/4-1/3 of those receptions were simple 1 yd passes replacing our running game. Yards? Same deal. When I'm judging to see if someone is great or above average, I always say this: "If I am the opponent, do they scare me".. Right now, the answer is NO.
