I don't think it's "either/or". Free agency occurs before the draft so they'll know before draft day what they need. They do need to balance the cost of FAs against the cap space so that may dictate their moves.
Ya ur right. I see what some top LTs are getting paid...$20..$25+ per, more than a lot of QBs. Having a rookie (Becton) cheap was a great idea, but now that we'll have to pony up big bucks Id almost rather start over, try again. A LT on a rookie deal is a god sent for cap purposes. I'd rather see Huff extended at this point.
highest paid positions in the NFL (aka the best value for having a really good one on a rookie deal) using an average of the top 5 paid at each position 1) QB (51.8) 2) Edge (27.7) 3) WR (26.74) 4) LT (21.81) 5) CB (19.88) 6) RT (19.28)
The problem for 2024 is Douglas. He has given terrible contracts to Lazard, Zach, Tomlinson, and Uzomah, and drafted poorly in the first round in 2020, 2021, and 2023. The cupboard is pretty bare with greatly overpaid piss-poor vets and a bunch of undrafted free agents. The jets need help at WR, on the OL, a backup QB, ILB, and safety. And we have no 2nd round pick. Hey, maybe he will draft another edge rusher in the first round in 2024. Need a new GM and head coach and that will likely by 2025.
Great.. Now we're guaranteed The Trilogy. Hopefully this will be the final chapter in the Douglas/Saleh Era..
spotrac has his value at 10m/year He's being a bit overrated by fans TBH. he's not getting TJ watt money lol. probably more like lawson money
The f’ed up thing is that we are likely looking at a whole offseason of Rodgers threatening to retire or non-committal about returning in 2024. so we are gonna have a situation where everyone on staff returns cause of Rodgers and Rodgers himself dicking around
I think he's an FA, so he'll get what ever some team decides pays him...but I really hope he stays here. Ya, Lawson money seems fair, but you never know
Note that Florio underscores that if the Bills don't make the playoffs, or don't contend for the VLT, he thinks they'll at least get rid of McDermott and get an offensive minded guy in there to work with Allen. So even a "future HOF'er" like Allen seems to need an offensive minded HC. WAKE UP Jets!
of course. spotrac bases their value on current production and current paid players with the same production. of course a team can offer him 15 (which is lawson money) but their projections are usually pretty accurate give or take 20% so them saying 10mil is basically 8-12mil depending on how much a team loves him
Huff is a bit unique....UDFA, he got very little attention early on, especially from the coaching staff. He started out as a rarely used on 3rd and long downs. He has great 'get off', which has always been highlighted. His past production, which much of spotrac is based off, might give him a lower number that what he really deserves, just based on his first 3 seasons. It wasn't until this year they really started working with him on running downs. And he's doing well in that area too, along with his good/great pass rush. He's just now becoming a complete edge rusher. Some team is going to say "If the Jets had treated/coached up Huff from day one, he'd be known right now as a top tier 3-down edge rusher". Lets get him and let him run wild!" If JD can re-up him in the $8-$12 range, I'd love that. But I just have that feeling he's going to get a lot more....
it's unique for sure and teams pay based on what they think you will do and not what you have done. people pay for production not history. with that said their comparisons are based on huffs 2022 and 2023 with others when they were FAs and they came up with charles omenihu (20.4 win rate ranks 12th and 13.6 pressure rate ranks 24th) arden key (14.6 pressure rate ranks 17th) Tyus bowser (couldn't find pressure rate ) and carl lawson when we signed him.
Not too often a young pass rusher hits the open market Leonard Floyd 4 years/ 64 mil with the Rams Dante Fowler 3 years/48 mil with the Falcons there are players of Huff's Ilk that hit the market and got deals. That's about what he will/can expect
Interesting how when Daboll left, the program went to shit, even with a great QB. Defensive coach is just not a way to go, with very few exceptions. Finding a good DC is much easier. Heck McDermott will probably be available. Saleh hopefully will be, though for someone else. Even Rex Ryan interviewed this year and would love to come back next year as well as a Jets DC. The point is, there is a way to have a really good defensive coach without him being a HC. Much harder to find a good offensive mind. Which is why we need to make this move. Let's get Ben Johnson or Monken as a HC who will call offense, and Ulbrich or Rex as a DC. It's not a rocket science, the jury is out on modern NFL. It's about the offense. Which by the way is another fuck up by JD, who could have had Daboll if he waited literally two weeks.
I think you can win with this defense and an above average offense. You just can't do it with an historically bad offense.
