The tank is one thing, but how can you risk one of your stud players getting injured in a meaningless game? If they were trying to play spoiler it’s one thing, but there is really no incentive to play any starters for either side. It’s actually stupid and irresponsible to play starters in this game.
Getting injured is part of the game and the risk all players take. It could happen any time, even after four snaps of the season. It's not like they have a playoff game coming up. Besides, its the Patriots and no one, meaningless game or not, wants to lose to them. If Belichick is taking this game seriously, and I'm sure he is, then the Jets should. If they get hurt, they have all off-season to recover. As for tanking, never believed in it, never will, as applied to the players. These guys practice all week, attend meetings and suit up on game day. When they get out on the field, they're only thinking about doing their job to win the game, and that's the way it should be. Happy New Year to all.
Usually when the owner/gm says it's time to tank, the HC will tell the fans he wants to see some of the younger players get a chance to play. Many vets get the day off so the bench boys and practice squad fellas can get some play time. Seeing what we have in the younger players is NFL Code for 'we're tanking' w/o saying 'we're tanking'
I absolutely see this as an opportunity to put a bunch of young players out there and see what they can do. There is absolutely no need for the old dogs that won’t be here next year to play, nor our few nucleus super stars to see the field, like Garret, Hall JJ and others. This game does not mean shit, and beating NE under these circumstances means even less.
beating the Pats this week will feel hollow as you know it's what they want - be funnier to annoy them by out-tanking them!
Absolutely not. End the 15 games losing streak against New England. Enough is enough. Not even when New England dominated the league could they do this to the Jets.
This mindset has caused us to miss out on a lot of good players. Lawrence, Bosa, and now Drake Maye. At a certain point we have to prioritize pragmatism over hollow victories that objectively hurt the team the following year. Winning 7 games instead of 5 or 6 does nothing to improve the culture. Good players improve the culture.
I disagree to an extent. For a team like the Bears or Raiders, who weren’t really going anywhere this year anyways, winning games down the stretch is important. Both of those rosters have some pretty good pieces in place. For us, I would agree it’s useless. Just like it ends up being useless for us when were say in 2017 with Josh McCown and Bryce Petty.
More like the following few years. And we've done it enough times. There are times you want your young team to get experience winning games. This may actually have been one of those years if the Jets were playing well and just overmatched because because they didn't have a solid quarterback. Sad how this team went from a young hopeful team to one that we are debating would have been better off losing instead.
I agree with this. And years like 2017 is where we are headed. That was a year we had McCown at QB, and a UDFA, Robbie Chosen as our number 1 WR, McGuire and Powell at RB. Because we were still paying off the all in from 2011/12. When we hired Idzik he just continued pushing money down the road. Mac had to come in and clean up the cap which took several seasons, finally clearing in 2018. But he drafted terrible during that time, and when he finally made room he made terrible deals for Trumaine Johnson first, then CJ Mosley before he left. He threw big money at the wrong places. That said, McCown was the best QB we've had running the offense every since. In a year we had nothing. If we stick with our current course I'd expect 2025/26 to be similar to 16/17.
Winning 5, 6, or 7 has zero relevance to getting a QB this year. It just won’t happen in round one. But it might impact missing out on a top OL or WR.
Yeah we're in a really bad spot because we should be drafting a QB this year but we're hamstrung by Rodgers. Had we lost to the Texans and Commanders we'd be sitting at #2 overall and in a prime spot to draft either MHJ, the top OT, or trade down and get a top ~3 WR and OT in the draft. But alas, we're a dumb franchise.
I also want to see the them snap the Pats winning streak, draft pick we damned. Sure, that guy will only be available if they have a higher pick. That guys not fixing this team all by himself. It’s all “build a contender” yada yada, and by mid to late season people are talking about how they need to lose. This franchise fucking blows.
9 in total 3 that look good but all relatively recent 2 that didn't pan out but weren't busts 4 busts
