Boston Globe "It's not official yet, but expect the Chargers to put a first-round tender on restricted free agent running back Michael Turner -- meaning any team that signs him to an offer sheet must give up a first-round pick if San Diego doesn't match... The Jets are expected to pursue Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel, who tied Bailey for the NFL lead in interceptions with 10 this season, and Patriots linebacker Tully Banta-Cain, who had a career-high 5 1/2 sacks this season."
I would pass on Turner for a 1st rounder...he could end up being another Derrick Blayock...As for Samuel...back up the brinks truck please.
Samuel is a legitimate shut-down corner. We need more playmakers on Defense. Samuel and Rhodes would be a force to be reckoned with.
I would go for Turner, who for the Jets first rounder would be an absolute bargain (yeah, that guy wouldn't go higher then 26th in this years draft? Give me a break). And Samuel would fit perfectly.
Samuel will want way more than we will be willing to part with, hopefully the Redskins go after him and Nate falls to us. Turner looks like he has potential, hopefully he pulls a LaMont Jordan and forces the Chargers hand. Would a 2nd rouder and Barlow or Houston be too much? And HERE HERE for signing former Pats players to make BB go insane and have a nervous breakdown.
Well said, and the Chargers do not get to SELECT the team they deal with. In other words, let's say, for arguments sake ONLY, the Lions want Turner too and they hold the #2 pick. If Turner accepts OUR offer, that's the one they deal with, regardless of what they want to do. Obviously, the Lions aren't going to be interested, I was just illustrating my point. Simply put, if Michael Turner with what we know about him now, is in the draft, he goes before #26. Now we could try to TRADE with SD for Turner's RIGHTS (giving up less of a pick) but then SD has to agree to what they are getting and sign turner to his tender, deal him, and then we sign him (we did this with mcCareins)
Anyone that thinks a backup running back is worth a #1 draft pick when Edgerrin James and Shawn Alexander BOTH couldn't be traded for a #2 is high. The value of the running back position has been diluted for quite a while now and many teams are donning the running back by committee approach. Unless there becomes a talent vacuum in college football that last many years, I really don't see any takers for Turner without working out a deal with the chargers for less.
I don't think the Jets are going to pay what samuels wants. Plus, the branch incident just made things worse betweent the two teams. The Jets org already said they plan on building through the draft
I couldn't agree less. Turner has much less mileage on them. It's going to take a 1st rounder to get him.. Why? Because it's not too cost prohibitive for SD to tender him that 1st rounder and keep him. It's only something like 1.5M. Of course, every team will try to work something out for less. That's a no brainer. However, #26 (I thought we went 25th, but what do I know?) is awfully late. We could use #37 to move up to around #15 though... I don't think an RB will solve our issues though that's the only thing I worry about in that regard.
Samuel is 26. WE HAVE to get him on our team. A player like that to get to free agency is rare. We need to pick him up. It's a position where drafting a player means waiting 3 to 4 years until they finally show any potential. Getting him should be one of our biggest priorities. I don't know enough about Banta-Cain to say we should or shoudln't get him. I just hope he's not another Chatham or Kassell. Both those guys suck. As for Turner, I wouldn't give up a 1st rounder. I don't think teams would be willing to give up that high a pick for an unproven running back. That being said, I could see the Jets offering a package of Houston or Barlow and a 2nd rounder for him.
Combine Samuel's youth, athleticism, and play-making ability with his knowledge of Brady and the Pats offensive system, this is a no-brainer, and no price is too high. Jets have the cap room, they need to move swiftly and decisively, however to get him at the best price. One fear: In the past, the Pats haven't signed their free agents, but they're usually coming off Championship victories. Not sure if Kraft will react the same way after losing this one.
If you guys even think Tangini is even thinking about trading our number 1 for Michael Turner you guys are totally out of your mind. Not a chance in hell. There won't be many if any players we ever give up a first rounder for. This front office thinks of first rounders as gold.
yes, i agree NYjetspenny, but that being said we could try and offer a different package, i doubt SD gets that number 1 they want so they will be reasonable to deal with, im totally for the 2nd rd+barlow/houston...... we need a RB im sick of this 19 carries for 30 yrds BS. I WANT A WORKHORSE Get Turner
I'd rather keep the pick and draft a kid. We don't know how good Turner really is and by having the pick we can use it as levrage to either move up or down come draft day. We wouldn't use Turner like that. Plus, I'd rather just draft an RB in the 2nd or 3rd round anyway; spending a first rounder on an RB is usually not worth it since there's an abundance of them. Many of the very good running backs in the NFL right now were mid-round picks. Turner himself was a 5th rounder. He's totally not worth giving up our pick for, regardless of whether he's the best back in the draft or not.
yeah salz but, turner basically is a rookie, but hes proved some what in the NFL, hes not beaten up and he has seen what the defense of an NFL team looks like, I'd love Turner, but NOT for a 1st Rd. I doubt the Chargers will get any team to give them a 1st for him.
1st rounder for turner? no thanks, i'd rather draft somebody...i would, however, like samuel....that would be a double edged pick-up, a plus for us as well as taking away from the pats
