When I talk about the NY Fan Base, this is EXACTLY what I am talking about. It's bad enough a kid has to come to a team that is historically bad and has a media pool that takes pure joy in shredding the fresh meat but when the fans are more vicious than all the media combined, I can see how trying to grow in NY is near impossible. These are VERY YOUNG men and they've had sunshine blown up their asses their whole lives. MOST aren't capable of handling it. MOST completely fail and washout of the league. A VERY SMALL handful escape the organization and are able to go on to other teams and be successful. No one's asking for a cuddle session but I wonder how much better a player might perform if the fanbase actually cut them some slack, for more than a game or two in a row. Hell, how about a whole season. I don't know. Nothing else is working. Something new has to be tried. Just spit balling here. The only thing I can guarantee everyone is that if this team cannot find a QB that can perform then this team will NEVER get to a Super Bowl and most likely not see the playoffs. Not anytime soon anyway.
And I’m old enough to remember when Terry Bradshaw (6 TD-24 INT, 3-5 W-L rookie year), Troy Aikman (9 TD -18 INT, O-11 W-L rookie year), and Peyton Manning (26 TD-28 INT, 3-13 W-L) were given some slack for pretty bad performances in their younger years.
That’s not how the NFL works anymore and it’s not Jets fans faults. Darnold regressed and Geno never really improved in two years. Tough to blame them for moving on from Geno, giving Darnold another year with a better cast was obviously the move. But blaming the fans? Cmon.
You’re right that expectations have changed. And it would be ridiculous to lay the ultimate responsibility for the Jets’ quarterback fiascos at the feet of the fans. Or the feet of the press. Or the feet of the position coaches? Or the feet of the offensive coordinators? Or the feet of the general managers? Or the feet of the head coaches? Or the feet of the owner? It seems to me clear that many factors have contributed to the unrealistic expectation of competence from our rookie quarterbacks, with inadequate weight given to the crappy team situations in which they were put. Sure, it would have been great if our first round rookie quarterbacks could’ve had years like Daniels or Stroud. But the teams they were given were not as functional, and it’s doubtful that Daniels or Stroud could’ve had success with the teams that Sam or Geno were given. Yes, the money and the hype trains have progressed to the point that It’s unrealistic to expect the fans to be patient with several years of stumbles, typified by Bradshaw’s career. But, hell, can’t we even today ask the fans and press to allow our rookie quarterbacks to sit for a year or two? Sitting and learning for a year certainly worked for Mahomes. In any case, I agree with the position that it’s futile to keep drafting quarterbacks and expecting them to succeed with lousy teams. We’ve tried that several times, and it just doesn’t work. This time, let’s build a team first and then add a first round quarterback draft choice to lead it.
They make money in college now and mostly on one year deals. So they are used to fanbases that are demanding results right away.
I'm not necessarily "blaming" the fans. However, it IS a component of the experience as a whole. Believe me when I tell you, fans in NY and Philly, especially, are brutal. I've heard fans threaten players and worse. Compare that to fans from other markets it's night and day. It's also PALPABLE. I can tell you that I've never heard certain kinds of language come out of a 49'ers fan's mouth that I've heard out of NY/Philly. Now, there's always that small number of complete idiots that grace all fan bases, it just "seems" that there a LOT more of them when you start talking about teams from the NY and Philly markets to name a couple of the most obvious ones. It's all I'm saying.
Philly just won the SB so obviously it’s overblown. Or better yet has nothing to do with on field performance
Eagles fans have been spoiled. They've had one of the top organizations in all of sports not just the NFL since the turn of the century.
If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. At the NFL level these guys are professionals making a lot of money to do their job. The NY market is a beast but these guys should have that in their heads coming in. I don't blame the fans. Players bust everywhere not only in NY the NFL is a results/production business the shelf life of unproductive players/executives is very short if they don't produce. Everywhere not only in NY.
Probably. He was selected 11th in a draft where 5 quarterbacks went in the top 15. Ironically it’s turned out to be a dreadful class when everyone thought it was generational.
