I am not above admitting when I am ignorant on a topic. However, I stand by my statement that Revis was a better CB.
Another great move by AG and Mooge. Basically 30 mil was the price, everyone knew that. But unlike Houston with Stingley, Mooge got us 4th year team option at the same price. Houston does not have that with Stingley. It's a pretty big difference. If Sauce is still a great player by that time (that would be 2030 as he has one year on current deal, one year 5th year option, plus 3 guaranteed), to have him at 30 mil then would be a huge bargain. @BroadwayAaron I believe you and others were slamming Mooge at the time when you saw Stingley and others signed while Sauce (and GW) was still unsigned, but Mooge was proven to be correct. Still locked him us same cycle, but got a better deal by waiting a little longer.
I'm pretty sure my beef was letting the Stingley contract happen before Sauce because Sauce was absolutely going to require more guaranteed. Which he did. Granted it was by like two cents, but that was my beef. Getting the extra year is big for sure.
I know we like to pretend Sauce was awful last year but he wasn't. And the two years before that he was All-Pro. I don't know how much more of a proven commodity a guy entering his fourth year could be.
Since entering the league: 1st in PFF grade (90.7) 1st in PFF coverage grade (85.4) 1st in least receiving yards allowed per game (21) 1st in least receptions allowed per game (1.8) 1st in lowest completion % against (50.9) 1st in least yards allowed per snap (0.58) t-1st in forced incompletions (43) 3rd in lowest passer rating allowed (67.5) But other than that, how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?
You remember these stats when the next experts reminds you about the correllation between winning the turnover battle and winning the game.
He's got the lowest target rate in the league amongst CBs since coming into the league. He's had less chances to catch the ball than any other person playing his position. If this is your reasoning for not paying a guy who ranks at the very top of basically every possible category except one... I dunno, I guess I'm glad you're on the internet and not at One Jets Drive.
Right, but I don’t think anyone is saying Sauce is better than Revis…he’s not But he’s one of the best in the game right now, and we HAD to keep him if we want to build a team. The price is set by the market and it is what it is. Also, the price only ever goes up. So if you think this is expensive now, then waiting and trying to resign him next offseason will be more expensive. Guaranteed. And I think the stats above show pretty well that there is more to rating a CB than counting picks. Yes, picks are important no question. Turnovers are game changers. But if you are a shutdown corner who takes the other team’s WR1 pretty much out of the game, you’re not going to get a shit ton of picks. I grant Sauce had a down year last year compared to his first two, but so did the entire defense, and a lot of that was the coaching turmoil and dysfunction. I just don’t get this criticism … he’s a great player…just watch the games and you can see that…he’s the young in his prime type of player that you have to keep. He was always going to be expensive because he plays a premium position. Good move to sign him now and save money compared to what it would cost to sign him next year
Revis had arguably the mist dominant 2 year stretch the position has ever seen. At HIS best he was the best ever. I do believe that Sauce has the potential to go down having an overall better career than Revis. I think Aaron Glenn is going to be good for him and he is going to have a great bounce back All Pro year.
I think Sauce has better physical attributes than Revis. At 6'3 with those long arms, Sauce is an absolute dream for a defensive back. Very rare to find that and he's still trying to figure out how to use those long arms Of course Revis in his prime was a better CB overall, smarter player, his attention to detail and film study gives him the edge and why he's wearing a gold jacket. There was a video going 'round recently showing Revis in 2009 running the WR routes ahead of the opposing WR
Revis is arguably the best player to ever play the position (arguably, not definitely). The simple fact that we can even have the Sauce/Revis convo probably bodes well for making him the highest paid CB in football.
Well yeah, I don't think anybody is saying he's better than Revis, just that picks are not the be all end all of cornerback play. Revis was a hall of famer, with relatively low picks compared to others. It doesn't mean he wasn't good. To me the important stats are, completion% / QB rating against, pass break ups and causing other teams to avoid you on the field are super important. Remember, after 2009, the majority of the league stopped throwing Revis' direction and the pick #s went way down. Then of course, there is THIS.
I feel like Jets fans just hold him to higher standards than the rest of the league. If he gets burned for a TD, it's such a rare occurrence that fans notice it and start complaining, as if the guy needs to be perfect. Last year wasn't even that bad for him.
Sauce’s poor tackling was exacerbated by the scheme. He was playing in a cover 3 scheme that left him with major run support responsibilities and teams exposed it big time last year as the defensive line was dismantled and there was a lack of penetration up front (thanks to Joe Douglas). The man scheme that he’ll be in means he has to eye up one receiver and keep the running game inside and that’s about it. A lot of times receivers run off the line down field anyways and the corner follows. On any receivers that catch passes down field on him, he was really fine just wrapping, holding and waiting for support. He is still a terrible tackler but it’s easier to hide in man to man schemes so I expect a big time season out of him.
The Revis vs. Sauce debate is irrelevant in deciding whether or not he is worth the extension. Just an interesting discussion, but separate from this. Sauce was quite possibly the best CB in football his first 2 years and still very good last year but as others have mentioned, look at the scheme and what was happening around him. I prefer to lock up some of these home grown franchise cornerstones rather than let them walk or replace them with free agents out for payday competing with other teams to sign
I haven't seen anyone make this argument... Aaron Glenn was a phenomenal CB in the NFL. If that cat thinks this kid should be paid then who am I to tell him no? Seriously!! It's still on the table if Glenn can be a good HC, however his knowledge of the Corner game is unquestioned, in my opinion. Sauce was amazing his first two years and I'd be willing to bet any corner would have shit the bed with the disaster that was last year. So, tackling aside, this was a FANTASTIC signing! BTW, have you been watching the league the last 5 years? Fucking tackling is disaster shit at every level on EVERY single team. Sauce isn't the only one who is a shit tackler.
Hell, with that kinda chedda, Sauce might get his uniform dirty this year with an occasional grass stain?
