Quoting myself from almost exactly 3 years ago just to pat myself on the back for being smarter than the Jets front office
We entrusted Darnold to a guy who is out of the NFL (Gase). That shows you how incompetent our decision-making was under Woody. He was infatuated with Gase because Peyton Manning had a career year with the guy when he probably would have achieved 95% of that with anybody on these forums being the Denver OC that year. Unlike when I followed the NFL in the 1970's, today you have to be a definitive franchise QB by year 5 (or even earlier) or you won't get extended and are likely cut or traded. Yet if you show you belong in the NFL -- even as a quality backup -- the best thing to do is to sign your young QB to a long-term extension: You get him on a team-friendly discount if he's not clearly a franchise QB He's likely to IMPROVE as virtually all QBs do in Years 4-10. Even BAD QBs get better. If signed to a 5-year deal....he's likely to have at least one Top 5-7 QB performance.....possibly another Top 10 or 12....and then a few mediocre average years. That is NOT a bad option if you are risking taking a bust with a high draft pick. Today, the Giants would never have given Phil Simms enough time to esablish himself. BTW, the way to go was to pair Sam with Ja'Marr Chase because you would know for SURE if it was the QB or the system/coaching. Taking Penei Sewell was also another option and he's been solid. Trading with SanFran was actually my 3rd choice. You wonder if Mike MacCagnan might have led to an alternate universe where we kept Sam. Clearly, he saw something wrong with the way Gase was working after his hire. It's clear now that Woody probably forced Gase onto MacCagnan, to our detriment. We though Gase was that year's Ben Johnson or Liam Coen, and he clearly was not. That's the 2nd time that Peyton Manning screwed us.
Mike LeFleur and Sam wouldn't have been a bad fit.... JD, had one very good draft, amongst a ton of awful decisions....
absolutely, and this continues to be a part of the problem with the jets. the 9ers have a meh qb but the hc knows how to put him in positions to win. we never do that. we have talented guys that are just completely unable to help learn to play the game. its sad, but hey were stuck with a defensive guy for next year at least at this point and just refuse to hire a known entity
Any idea why they did that? I thought he was going to play whole game for the Passing Yard title. Oh well, now I can get excited about a Giants win. @Jonathan_Vilma - What's happening brother?
It won't hurt. I am a trade down guy as I don't find Mendoza or Moore that special but I am sure a team will like one of them and trade up with us. But Woody needs to sell tickets so he will force for a QB drafted at 2. Picking at 2 will at least prevent us to trade up.
Changing the K-ball rules back to what they were should be #1 on the Rules Committee's list after the season.
