This seems pretty low to me. Also is it fair to compare todays athletes against yesteryears athletes? So I would say that the achievement has to be taken more seriously , and to me this 'ranking' does not do it justice. The Jets are undeniably the biggest surprise in Super Bowl history, but they are also one of the least impressive champions. Sure, there's the glitz of Joe Namath and his guarantee of victory over an 18-point favorite. New York also boasted a future Hall of Fame wide receiver in Don Maynard and a solid ground game with Matt Snell and Emerson Boozer. However, the Jets had just the third-best record in the AFL that season. Namath completed fewer than 50 percent of his passes, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns. Coincidentally, Weeb Ewbank coached New York to victory in the Super Bowl over his former team, the Colts. Oh yeah ? and the Jets lost the "Heidi" game that season.
I cannot stand this stuff. It makes no sense. All that matters is who wins the game that year, not even who was the 'best'. The 85 Bears won the SB in early 86, and that's as far as it goes for me. Were they the best team? Well, yeah, they won. If they didn't win, then they wouldn't be....but they did. Period. They can't play the 83 Raiders because how is the Fridge going to fit in the time machine anyway? I hate lists.
On a positive note, SI ranked SBIII #1 out of the 8 Super Bowls Played in Miami... There's something to smile about...
That truly sucks. How do you rank this team so low? And below losers? And the big question, how do you rank the 1968 colts ahead of them?
Not only did they rank us below some losers, they ranked us lower THAN THE TEAM WE BEAT THAT DAY!!!!! The poll has no credibility.
1/2 right. I see the 9ers as the greatest team. I think the '85 bears are over rated, and their greatness has enlarged over the years the more they've been talked about. I think they easily make the top 10, and in 99% of cases make it top 5. But I get sick every time I hear people say "the '85 bears where the greatest team ever, hands down, no doubt, blah blah blah." In twenty years our children will be hearing how that defense could defeat any opponent single handedly with fireballs from their eyes and lightning bolts from their ass.
These rankings have absoltely zero credibility. Who is to say what teams are better than others in that detail. I say they're just about...... idk, 12th. So what? We shouldn't even dignify these opinions by posting them here.
This is a typical ESPN surface cut at the facts. Back in the late 60's most of the passers were under 50% and INTs were also a lot higher because of the way defenders were allowed to beat the crap out of receivers all over the field. Also, the Jets defense that year was ranked near the top of the AFL. The defense (Featuring AFL Hall of Famers Grantham and Philbin) would continue to stay near the top of rankings for the next two years and they were #1 in 1970. The Jets really hurt their legacy by not repeating the following year. According to several accounts, the team suffered typical Super Bowl fall-off in 1969. Many of the guys reported fat and out-of-shape. They rallied and won the division again, but were not focused enough to knock-off the eventual SB champion Chiefs at Shea, losing 13-6. Had they won that game, it's highly likely they would've also beaten the Raiders in the last AFL championship game and the Vikings. A 2nd Super Bowl would've sent at least 3 more Jets into the HOF: Grantham, Philbin, and Winston Hill. Probably the kicker as well, Jim Turner.
Sorry Hesses cost cutting ways began to take effect with the 69 NYJs. In fact the OLman we got from Hout Talamini was denied a raise for the 69 season so he retired & his replacement was many moons below him. I think there are others as well. We again finished first in 69 & then that was the year that the AFL adopted a PO schedule of #1 in the east played #2 in the west & the same procedure for the west so KC beat us at Shea then beat Oak also so being the #2 seed in the west you can say they were the 1st team to win the SB as a WC team
