I wish he’d have been our Deshaun Watson; Watson was at least a really good QB who just liked to get a little extra from his masseuse. Zach Wilson was a terrible QB who likes to get a little something extra from old women who used to babysit him.
I remember years ago we had a conspiracy theorist troll that kept saying Darnold would never win a Super Bowl because his last name was stupid.
Christian Hackenberg was a far worse pick because he never set foot on the field but somehow kept that brain-dead piece of shit Maccagnan from drafting QB in 2017. Only morons think firing Maccagnan was a mistake.
The Jets cannot develop a quarterback, period. Chad Pennington was the closest they ever got. Besides the Sanchez years, which I still believe if Favre had stuck around they'd have won it all, the Jets have typically had their best seasons with veteran QBs. Every time they start from scratch it crashes and burns. Darnold had the benefit of getting coached by better teams on his way to becoming a solid starter. He wouldn't have gotten to that point had he stayed with this incompetent franchise.
Different take than most. After showing improvement in year two coming back from mono Sam lost Richie Anderson and had to learn a third NFL offense with a new coordinator. In this third year after saying he saw ghosts against the Cheatriots there was a ton of noise on this forum calling him a bust and wanting him gone. I thought he deserved another year with more help but I think my position was held by maybe half of the people here if that.
I was one of the ones that wanted to keep him at least for that year - my reasoning was a combination of: - his contract was still relatively cheap - I wanted to see what he could do with a bit of stability in the coaching (not something I associated with the Jets) and some other improvements on the team at skill positions - I was very nervous about drafting ZW given the lack of top tier competition he had faced especially given it was during COVID and once we lost out on Lawrence I thought the smart thing to do was wait - the niners offered Miami their first round pick and two more first round picks to trade up for Trey Lance and so given we could have had at least the same offer it seemed like a very good offer and one we should have accepted. I will be applying for the position of GM for the NYJ when it next becomes available.
I think you and 3/4 of the posters here would have done a better job than the previous administrations. I'll give the present one the benefit of doubt. Rich Eisen said he believed a new coach (Saleh) should not have to be saddled with a QB (Darnold) with a dubious record. While I too thought Sam should have been given more time, back then when all of us were divided, I also thought the new coach had the right to choose his QB. Of course, Saleh made the wrong choice and paid the price. In hindsight, JD should have looked for a coach that would continue to work with Sam instead of tossing him aside for a new shiny toy.
Agreed. Sam never really had a good offensive line and supporting cast here. I was in the camp of trade down the #2 to build around him instead of throwing another more raw QB in the fire.
