Raiders | Knapp hired as offensive coordinator Mon, 29 Jan 2007 10:31:43 -0800 David White, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports the Oakland Raiders have hired Greg Knapp as the team's offensive coordinator, according to a league source. coach Lane kiffin will call all of the plays for the Raiders. Knapp just there to assist Kiffin.
I wasn't aware that Kiffin was going to call the plays. That's unprecedented in my opinion. For someone who has no real pro football experience, to be able to figure out the way the NFL works and call the plays as well is pretty bold. The college game is amazingly more different than pro ball.
I think this is pretty significant, since Knapp is a West Coast specialist, and the guy that everyone says they will draft (JaMarcus Russel) is a vertical passer. Knapp's system didn't work in Atlanta, because Vick is a running quarterback, with a downfield passing arm. Meaning not that accurate, and not that instinctive in the short game. Russell is too similar to Culpepper for them to draft them now, a player thrown into a conservative system in Miami and proven he's worthless when he needs to make quick decisions. Something the West Coast Offense strives on.
Not really his father(Monte), Jon Gruden(kid spent alot of time with Buccs) and Pete carrol(his godfather) all prepared him for the NFL. Read this article. It will explain it all. http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/sports/football/nfl/oakland_raiders/16570923.htm
Not really because like I stated kiffin calling all the plays. It his offense. Pete carrol who should know him best says jamarcus russell fits his offense the best. Kiffin wants to go down the field. Jamarcus Russell in the high 60 percent passer. So hes has to be doing something right.(his accuracy can't be that bad)
I agree with jeremy Green(espn) assessment . Jermey Green of ESPN says JRuss -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- over trading down and Olineman.... Lee (Minneapolis): JG, does any other team have Russell as a top 5 pick? Wouldn't it be a good idea for the Raiders to try to trade down with Arizona so they can get Thomas? Seems to make sense for both teams. Jeremy Green: I think when it is said and done every team will have him as the #1 QB in the draft which makes him a top 5 pick. The Raiders have enough young linemen... they need someone who knows how to coach the guys they have and that should help out a lot. Next up should be Tom Cable as oline coach. Steve Corkran, of the Contra Costa Times, reports Oakland Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin has reportedly offered former Atlanta Falcons assistant coach Tom Cable the position of offensive line coach. also reports Raiders Raiders might be bringing in ALex Gibbs(he expensive ) and is the master of the cut block and sometimes the illegal chop block. (parttime line coach) Reason why this is important because gallery, Grove. MCQuistan etc all need to get alittle stronger. This blocking technique not about power and might be a better fit for the group.
HIs interception total say other wise. Tom Brady personal QB Guru worked out Russelll . Here the exerpt of what he said about Russell. "TOM'S TUTOR Every offseason, New England's Tom Brady works with former College of San Mateo head coach Tom Martinez, who cleans up the Patriots quarterback's mechanics. JaMarcus Russell this season threw for 3,129 yards and had a 167 passer rating. But last weekend, for the first time, Martinez worked with LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, regarded as one of the top prospects in the upcoming NFL draft. And what Martinez said should catch the attention of everyone in Oakland's front office. After working with Russell, Martinez told some people that he never has seen a talent quite like Russell -- including Brady. Martinez was highly impressed with Russell's "coachability" and his physical skills. Martinez said that Russell is the type of quarterback who can do everything wrong on a play and still have it come out right. But the fact that Martinez endorsed Russell as strongly as he did only reinforces the notion Russell will be going to the Raiders with the draft's No. 1 overall pick. The Raiders passed up quarterbacks Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler last April. They can't afford to set back their franchise again this April."
Just curious, where did you get that impression? I thought I read he was the third rated passer in the nation this year...
So RJ, are you willing to admit that you were wrong in saying Andrew Walters was the qb of the future.
Wait, wait, wait. What happened to this idea that the combination of Jackie Slater, Irv Eatman, and Arthur Shell were going to coach-up that crew of marshmallows into the Raider offensive lines of old? And, like BigCountry, I need to get this straight in my head: Andrew Walter 6'6" 230 is now NOT the quarterback of the future in Oakland? Isn't this the guy who, as we all heard many times over, shattered John Elway's touchdown records and who, but for injury his senior season, would have been a top ten pick in the draft? Did we replace that guy with someone else? Some journeyman hack, who cannot hang onto the ball? We need to know these things. If for no other reason, than so that we can quote them back to you twelve months from now.
Last offseason, October of 2006 was "the future". Walter was the QB in October of 2006, so Joe was right. However, that "future" is now "the past", so Walter can't be the QB of "the future" anymore, can he? Capiche?
so basically its a sad struggle since gannon left. understood. on another note forget what tom brady's coach said. russell has amazing physical tools but I myself think he will struggle. if your going with knapp as offensive coordinator and the kind of offense USC ran, a more pro style semi west coast ordeal. brady quinn is the better option. otherwise i see russell chucking jump balls which is a coin toss i wouldnt want to invest in. my problem with him is i think he was in dire need of one more year of college. everything could fall into place but im predicting a rocky start to his career.
That might work in college but certainly won't in the NFL. The best thing the Raiders could do is trade down and stockpile picks. Look no further than SD as a team that did everything right when having the first pick in the draft & an overrated QB prospect that teams will trade up for.
Who knows. I don't neccesarily agree that he's strictly a "jump ball" kind of QB. Sure he has the tools to do that, but as I pointed out earlier, he had an outstanding QB rating. When I watched him he was throwing every kind of route, even the shorter ones, with decisiveness and accuracy. As far as trading down, that seems to be everyone's popular take on having the #1 pick ever since Jimmy Johnson coached. But should the Colts have traded down instead of taking Peyton Manning? If Russell is a "once every 20 years" kind of talent at QB, you could very well regret passing on him under any circumstances...
Jeremy Green of ESPN in a chat mentioned that he believes that Quinn will be a much better fit than Russell due to the West Coast Offense the team will run under Knapp.
