http://media.putfile.com/Vince-Young-05-Highlights I'm from Austin and have seen all of VY's games, the majority in person. Obviously you can accuse me of bias, but I believe that an NFL GM would be crazy to pass up on Vince. He just brings the total package to the table. To this day I do not understand why anyone questions his passing. Texas did not emphasize passing in 2004 mainly because the receiving corps was decimated by graduation and they had Cedric Benson. But in 2005, with a more experienced group, Vince had a chance to show that he is a complete QB as he finished the season #1 in pass efficency. He is an excellent passer who makes smart decisions and throws with excellent precision. One of the things that people don't talk about enough with Vince is how he neutralizes the pass rush with both his speed and his strength. He routinely completes passes with perfect accuracy with defenders draped all over him. This will be a huge asset in the NFL. He is going to give defenses fits. Blitzes do not phase this guy. I noticed on the tape, for example, how Matt Leinart got rushed by Texas in the 4th quarter of the Rose Bowl and got off a pass that bounced at his tight end's feet. Two plays later they were stopped on 4th-and-2 and the rest is history. The point is Vince completes passes like that with his arm strength. Nothing Pete Carroll threw at him phased him. His athleticism enhances his passing ability. I am posting here because I have always sort of hoped he would end up a Jet. I think Vince would thrive in a pressure environment like NYC. I think a team with history and passionate fans (like Texas) is a perfect fit for Vince. He is a natural leader and a model of work ethic. And his competitive drive is already the stuff of legend. I really don't see any way he won't succeed. If you need more con-Vince-ing, check out the highlights below. The 2001 high school playoff highlights give you a glimpse of how comfortable he is under center and what beautiful touch he has on the deep ball. It was these highlights that had me thinking that kid would someday lead my beloved Horns to a national championship, and sure enough the dream came true. Some lucky NFL team is about to get the same prize that my Longhorns got. http://www.jcdenton40.com/VinceYoung.html Hook'em
Sorry, I had to. Anyway, I'm cautiously optimistic that he's going to be a terrific player. If he manages to drop to #4, I hope the Jets grab him. But did anyone else find the first video abit disconcerting? I mean, most of the clips are of him running around instead of making plays with his arm. Besides, all of the throws he made were practically to wide open receivers. I also didn't like the fact some clips were noticeably sped up. Anyway, while the vid was jaw-dropping, all it really managed to show is that he can scramble like a mad man, and has a cannon for an arm. Not a bad thing, but not that reassuring either.
All I'll say is it would be one thing if he used his legs to make up for passing deficiencies, but that is not the case. He can do both he equally well. He can pass when he needs to pass and he can run when he needs to run. Just ask Pete Carroll. The second link has tons of videos, BTW.
I hope the Jets get Vince... I truly think he has the potential to be a great QB... I think he will run a lot less in the NFL - but having the ABILITY to run, especially to buy time, AND to get a sure one yard on a QB keeper on 4th and 1 would be a HUGE asset to our team...
I would love to see VY under center for the Jets. But I think he might need a year to develop his arm to where his feet are.
im skeptic of all 3 "franchise" qb's in this draft. but out of all of them I would say Vince Young is the more sure thing to me. After watching Vinny go down in the playoffs and Penny tear his shoulder.I'd like a mobile QB who wont get tagged often. And I know the other part of that argument is him running around trying to make plays and getting creamed but....he'd get hit less than any other QB weve seen in a decade. I dont care about the "BIG VICK" comparisons.....throw the wonderlic crap out the window Marino got his score. anyways, Young seems to have better judgement of when to run and when to pass. or just buy time for his receivers. funky delivery, but the funny thing is i think he throws that way to use placement.......cause his placement is unbelievable. but anyways a real coach can clean his mechanics up....... i dont care what we do anymore as long as its not the worst plan lol but if Young fell to us at #4 id shit a brick if we didnt pick him.
You're confusing. You say you want a mobile quarterback who can run around a lot and avoid injury, and then you say "even though him running around will result in him getting creamed a lot. You defeated your own argument. I think, you prefer a mobile quarterback because mobile quarterbacks are LESS likely to get injured? Donovan McNabb and Daunte Culpepper missed significant time to injury. Rex Grossman lost his second season in the NFL diving for the pilon. Steve McNair hasn't been healthy in at least three years. Michael Vick hurt himself scrambling in the preseason and missed most of that season. Randall Cunningham was never the same player after his leg was snapped. Additionally, if Vince Young's placement is so unbelievable, why was he so hesitant about throwing in front of the scouts or participating in position drills? Scouts are concerned about both his arm strength AND accuracy, and it's not as if he's a guy they haven't watched for years. Vince Young is a player who has lots of questions about his ability to pass in the NFL, and with the increasing speed of linebackers and lineman presenting new challenges to guys like Michael Vick, his wheels aren't going to be enough for him to get by. When you couple that with his basic illiteracy, I would say that he's far from a sure thing, and if the Jets decide to select him I'll be extremely disappointed. -X-
Mucho Props!! Nuthin like a newcomer who post good info w/Links and has something to contribute.... His Speed for his size is Freakish!!! His Release point may be unorthodox but if it works for him why change it? I hate when NFL Scouts try and say He doesn't have a Normal Release and they compare it to the Old QB's... You know what, Every QB is different and QB X Won't be exactly like QB Z
I love those highlight videos, they are definitely part of what makes watching the draft so much fun. They can make every player look like the next coming of Unitas. Anyway, there is no denying Young is an exciting athlete, should be interesting to see how he develops into a pro...
NO, my contradictory point was thrown out there because I'd thought I'd say it before someone else did. I'm not calling him a sure thing, but hes the player out of Leinart/Cutler/Young that I'd like to have most..........players like Young can be phenomonal its all in the coaching. From a GM standpoint Leinart would be the best move And scouts would say Cutler..... it really doesnt matter pick your poison, all i can say is the game of football is evolving and versatility is NOT a bad thing. I believe a moblile qb who makes the right decisions is a player far more able to manage a game. But others like to see QB's pick defenses apart with his arm. I don't care, as long as we dont go with Brick at 4 i wont complain too much
I think we need to draft a big white tight end with the first pick. We're the Jets, it's been a while.
BTW, on the second link, if you click on "more" UT highlights, make sure to look at "Rose Bowl 2006: A New Hope." Funniest highlight video I've ever seen. Also an entertaining way of seeing what VY did in the Rose Bowl. I know it can be seen as corny (especially among those so-called draft experts), but VY's intangible qualities are what put him over the top. His high school coach said that once VY took over the Texas team he would not let them lose. I never forgot those words, and I watched as VY led Texas to 20 straight wins to finish his career. He has that indefinable quality of being a winner. Montana had those intangibles in college. So did Elway. I really think VY is going to make his mark in the NFL. I went to school in NYC, and I think every so often about returning. Vince on Sundays would be a huge bonus.
I don't think that Vince Young is as "bad" of a QB as everyone makes him up to be. His throwing mechanics aren't pretty but they get the job done. He is accurate, gets the ball to where his receivers can make plays.
It has always amazed me how polarizing Vince is. People either love him or hate him. The thing is it always seems the people who hate him base it on stereotype more than fact. How can a guy who passes for over 3000 yeards and finishes #1 in pass efficiency be labeled a bad passer? Whatever. Good luck to you guys, and I hope to see my boy in New York.
i remember watching the games a few months back and thinking "damn, id be ecstatic if we drafted this guy" then over the past few months ive not been thinking so highly of vince. but now, my mind has been refreshed as to why i want this guy. hes a freak, hes so deceptively fast its ridiculous. you see guys lined up to tackle him then all the sudden hes ten yards past them. and im not that worried about his passes getting knocked down because of his delivery because hes usually out of the pocket when he throws it so theres not a wall of defenders right in front of him. at #4 i want young or hawk, no others
Holy crap!!! Watching those videos showed me three things about Young: 1) He has great field awareness. 2) He is sickening accurate. 3) He isn't afraid to take a hit. This guy not only looks phenominal, but he looks fearless as well. This is my vote for Jets draft pick this draft. I hope we get him.
