AJ Smith will be out of a job by the end of the year as SD goes from SB faves to a tam that will struggle to make the playoffs. I know marty sucks in postseason and I can see getting rid of him but bring in a coach that can win in january, Norv can't win from Sept-January.
I have to admit, I think Turner will do a fine job as HC of the Chargers. One, his first stint as HC was in Washington where only him (in 1999) and Joe Gibbs (2005) have owned the Skins to the Playoffs since Snyder has bought the team. And in his 2nd stint as HC was in Oakland where Vince Lombardi himself could not turn that pile of donkey dung we are made to think is a football team into a winner.
While I agree he got a raw deal from Snyder in '00 remember it took him 6 seasons to get Wash to the playoffs and he missed the playoffs 6 of 7 years as a HC in DC. In Oak he had some expectations in 2005 and led them to 4 wins. In 9 years as a HC he has 1 playoff appearance. He's a good OC, he's not a good HC which is just like Wade Phillips. Phillips is a good DC and not a good HC but Phillips has alot more success as a HC than Norv.
FOX Sports also has mentioned that Ted Cotrell is expected to coordinate San Diego's defense... How much worse of a hire(s) can you make? Turner and Cotrell? They would of been better off getting some college offensive line coach from Akron rather than these two bums.
Doesn't Cottrel run a 4-3 cover 2? Why would you hire him into one of the league's best agressive 3-4 defensive teams????
From ESPN, because I can't post links I think he is a good hire, mainly because Phillip Rivers needs a mentor and Turner has a proven track record of great QB success and helping build young QBs.
No, he runs a 3-4 defense. Personally I think he will be fine as well. When he was here Herm tried to have Cottrell (who is a 3-4 coach) turn a team (that had 3-4 personell) into a Cover 2 defense. It was a disaster from the start.
I really like the hire for SD but what young QB's has Turner developed? Aikman was already in his 3rd year when he joined Dallas, he failed miserably with Heath Shuler found some success w/ Gus Ferrotte. After that, I see no one he can claim as a successful QB development
Shuler had no chance. But latly, look at Alex Smith, he really blossomed this season. Next season it's not gonna be pretty IMO. Aikman blew up in his 4th season, and never really looked back(when healthy, at least)
I know Marty had to go, but is Turner really an improvement? I think ultimately it's safe to say that SD screwed themselves when they assumed that they would have both of their assistants stay through the offseason.
Same can be said for Gore. He was only able to get those insane yards he got because teams had to acknowledge Smith/Bryant was a legitimate threat.
I agree that Herm made a dumb move but DH did better that Cottrell here with the same players. Also, how did Cottrell do when he left the Jets, I believe he went to Minnesota?
Schotty wasn't gonna take them anywhere, AJ honestly had no choice. 10-1 AJ and Norv are gone next year.
When DH got here we no longer had the aging Marvin Jones and Mo Lewis. We also finally got the personell to play the Cover 2 defense. Cottrell did horrible in Minnesota. Again, he's a 3-4 coach and in Minny they had 4-3 personell.
