Chad is an intelligent guy. He must know that nobody is going to offer him any more money than the Jets have just offered - a low base salary with incentives that he will reach if he recovers and plays well.

His contract isn't guaranteed, so there's no point in him just refusing to renegotiate. If he point-blank refuses to budge an inch he will be cut and will sign a similar contract with another team. At the moment, his only choice is about which team he plays for - the Jets, or someone else.

I'm hoping he and his agent are just trying to squeeze a bit more base salary out of the Jets, and that he will sign for just a bit more than the $1 million mark currently offered.

If it comes down to pride and principle, and he just doesn't think he should restructure, he'll have to go - and he will.

i agree, but if i were him i don't think i would restrucure. i would take the money and then concentrate on geting better. at some point a team will sign him with a minimal salary but with incentives as well. don't you get the feeling he has worn out his stay here? what would the reaction be at a hame game the next time he gets up slowly?

Take what money? He won't get a dime if he gets cut. How can you post on these boards and not know that?

Yea but how much signing bonus did he get from jets over years. That money in his bank. C Pennington should have enough money to live comfortable. Dosen't need a nine to five job.
YEs you are correct Pennington won't make any more money off jets if hes cut, but Jets will take a big cap hit if hes cut. Publicly they are saying that they willing to do that, but lets see ifb thats the case. (That what Pennington agent betting against them)

Duh-uh. They take the cap hit either way. He's going to get cut, and fade into oblivion.... see Tim Couch.

Thunderbird, you're kidding right? before you go on the attack learn something about context. when i said "take the money" i was refering about the money he has already pocketed.

Tim Couch for what it's worth is an excellent example.

Sure he will, Chad knows he can't make money elsewhere, so he will blink before the 3rd.

I agree with ice. For a million dollars, it may not be worth it for Chad, if his mind is focused on trying to restart his career, and in his long-term viability as a starting qb. If he rejects it out-of-hand, it's because he is looking for a fresh start elsewhere. Because he has made over $20 million, he can afford to do this. No matter how hard he rehabs, if he senses the Jets are moving on, he will never be seen as more than a back-up on the Jets, and he'll never be able to recoup the money down the road with incentives. If he starts fresh with another team as a back-up, he won't carry that stigma, and he could potentially move into a starting role down the road and recoup much more in incentives.

Now, we'll know for sure by March 3. A lot of what we are seeing now is posturing. As are the reports about Brees not getting tagged, which is setting a deadline on a long-term contract negotiation. I think there is still a possibility that Chad returns and accepts the pay cut, albeit smaller than the one that is currently being proposed. But, it is clearly up in the air right now, and depends on whether Chad really feels there is a future in New York.

NO Like Ryan leaf- Chargers had to wait till it was feasible to cut him(absorb cap hit) Thats what Chad agent counting on , despite the tough words that Jets are not going to be willing to absorb that hit. again you can say all you want but, lets see which side blink first. These agents aren't stupid, they know Jet numbers. How much they are over the cap, How much it cost to cut Pennington and How much it cost to franchise tag abraham.
Lets see jets FO execute their plan, without assistance from pennington. (reducing that cap number on books)

It’s a negotiation…it is in Chad’s best interest to drag this out. Any agent that takes a 1st offer from a club would be fired on the spot. If the Jets really want Chad they will get something done. If they low-balled him because they really don’t want him then they will end up cutting him.

Chad is a winner any way he goes, he already suckered us for $22 million and only played 16 games. I think there is a stupid GM that will give Chad the money if we cut him. I just want him out of NY!

I see Chad agent wanting more guaranteed money up front(signing bonus) before they reduce his salary on books. Only portion of any football player salary thats guaranteed is the signing bonus. That chad only protection.

Chad reminds me of Jim Harbough. A good qb when healthy, but never is. Time to move on.:pats_suck: <---love this thing(stuck in Pats country)

If we keep Chad and draft an OT at #4 I will quit routing for the Jets until Chad is finally gone. I'll watch NASCAR ever weekend instead.

    Exactly.

And it doesn't make any sense for the Jets only offer to be $1 million this year. If they want to keep him, then they will try and come to a compromise. If they don't want him, they'd just cut him, unless they are trying to make Chad look like the bad guy.

Yea, his career was ruined because he played through injury for a team and fanbase that has zero appreciation for what he tried to do for them. He sure suckered us.
