Coles is also a natural rebel. That's been true everywhere he has been. However he's not a selfish rebel. He works very hard and produces at the top of his ability all the time. No sulking, no me-first, no acting out on the field or sidelines. All things considered he's a very good team player even though his background causes him to pop off now and then. I completely agree with you that he actually really respects Mangini. He's going to popoff now and then because that's his nature but the Jets are never going to lose even one game due to something he said or did.
I really dont understand this desire to move either one of them now that I think about it. Both played well last year -- Hobson had his best season ever -- moving them at this point would be counter productive. If the Jets keep Barton moving he and Hobson would mean that both had to learn and get used to a new position again this year. If they had played badly throughout last season it might make sense, but both played well.
Hobson has a future, and the organization feels that being on the inside is the best place for him to be the rest of his career. They had to make the change at linebacker during some point or another. The only way to find out if this is the right move is to make the move and change positions.
I think we should look for them to drop Barton in a trade on draft day to pick up another second day rookie prospect. This draft is so full of LBers that the Jets can pick and choose what they want to do. If we don't go LB in the first round, we should look for guys like Tim Shaw, Stewart Bradley or Rufus Alexander as an addition to our LB corp. Then we'd have Bryan Thomas, John Vilma, Victor Hobson and one of the aforementioned guys. Thats a pretty nasty group.
The organization hasn't moved Hobson to the inside. That's just speculation by people on this and other boards.
I cringe everytime people say to cut someone due to their contract..... Of course I'm a Yankee's fan <___<
Because Hobson was drafted to play over the TE. Barton's weakness is in Pass coverage. And realisitically, that is where the little mistake can hurt you big.
Yeah but Hobson is slower than 75% of the TE's in the league. That's just a fact. It's not like he's great in coverage either unless Joey Harrington is playing catch with him. Also the strong safety handles the TE when he releases out of the flats unless there's a very quick and agile linebacker on the strongside, something the Jets do not have in either Barton or Hobson.
I like the mean streak, speed and physical presence Barton brings to the table and would love to see him stick around. W/ that said, he is indeed aging and has a high cap number and additionally doesnt fit as ideally at ilb in the 3-4 as well as the young/cheaper Hobson.
I love our CS, but I agree the move of Barton inside and Hobson outside never quite made sense to me. Barton is a prototypical OLB who can rush the passer and use his height to disrupt the offense. He was very successful before the new regime doing just that. Hobson is a natural inside hitter with power at the point of attack and explosiveness, and not the best outside one on one with a RB. He had an awesome year, but I would think he'd fit better inside. Regardless of why, I will put my trust in Mangini to figure it out...
I just have this feeling that Mangini and company figured that Vilma and Hobson inside together would be too little impact. Barton makes an impact wherever he plays because of his hell bent hard-hitting style.
