I don't know where most of you are getting that he won't be around at 25. Almost every mock draft i've looked at has him still around then and he would be a fine pick at # 25.
What has he done besides look good w/o pads at the combine to justify being such a high pick?? He looked smooth at the combine, but his season was sub par and the carries more weight then some 40 time to me. And what's with all this stretching the field nonsense, Chad P isn't known for taking chances downfield, why waste a draft pick on an unproven player who probably wouldn't be used correctly anyway? Makes no sense to bring him in. The new regime did a good job in rd.1 last year, I hope they continue that trend and avoid drafting someone like Olsen.
THE jets have to show an interest in those guys that may "fall" through the middle of the first round whether they are serious or not. a team at the top of round 2 with a bug up their arse is gonna want to sneak back into round one for someone like olsen, meachum, spencer, etc the more i think about this the more i think the jets will back out of round one. jil
Ben Patrick 6'4" 268lbs is the same as Chris Baker 6'3" 258lbs so why would you want the same TE on you team makes no sense
Not true at all buddy. Chris Baker sat on the free agent market for a long time and the only team sniffing was Miami and they were offering him league minimum or something close to it. I love baker because he plays hard and is obviously a Jet, but he is overrated.
Not true. He pawn himself off to the other 31 teams in the league but when there were no takers there was always the NYJs to take him back. Same situation to our ORT of this year.
Heard Greg Olsen this morning on the Joe Rose show down here is South Florida. He said he met with Mangini and Tannenbaum and they did not ask him 1 question regarding football. Not 1. The whole interview was about him as a person, his family etc. How do you interview a football player and not ask him 1 question about football?
I think Olsen is going to drop to the 25 and I hope we don't take him there. I'd be fine with him in later rounds but I don't see much of anything to suggest he's going to be a star and your first round pick has to have that potential.
Or maybe best case scenerio Olsen is there when the Jets are on the clock and a team like Chicago or New Orleans offers us a second or a third rounder to trade up 4 or 5 spots. Imagine the Bears giving us our original second round pick back for switching spots in the first round....while that's unlikely it wouldn't surprise me in the least with Tannanbaum at the helm
I think player visitation should be taken with a grain of salt. Besides, do you think the Jets will draft a TE who couldn't block my grandmother on her way to her walker? I don't understand why a TE like Chris Baker who can block and have soft hands isn't accorded the level of respect that he deserves. Having a solid offensive lineman on the right side of the line (Blalock?) will probably result in Baker having 50-60 catches this coming season because of decreased reliance on the TE as part of the pass protection scheme. If Olsen is picked, I would be one of the first to scratch my head in wonderment.
Maybe they aren't really interested in drafting him at all. Maybe they spoke with his coaches and got what they needed as far as football is concerned. Maybe they saw things they didn't like in the personality portion of the interview and decided to forego the football part of the interview. Maybe they had assistants perform the football interview and asked him to mention only the personality/background interview to the press - or possibly had him sign a non-disclosure agreement to protect their scouting methods (I don't know the legality of such a thing, but teams have to protect their scouting methods somehow or some radio dope could spill their plans to the rest of the league). There's a number of different scenarios you can choose from that I probably haven't conceived. But I would assume, based on the experience they got from last year's draft and from previous regimes for both of them, that they aren't waddling around in limbo not knowing what they are doing.
I don't know if i would be happy with the pick, but he seems to be pretty good. Maybe he's not right for the jets though.
Yeah, there's been a number of guys this year who, when interviewed, were brought into the film room and asked to break down film from their own games for Mangini and co. I'd assume there was some kind of holdup if this didn't happen.
I am not convinced that the Jets should take Olsen if available. If he is there at 25 then other teams are having difficulty with him as a 1stR pick. I think Adam Carriker will be the pick and I think the Jets will attempt to move up if necessary to get him. Don't forget how the Pats built up their team. The lines are the most important pieces to the puzzle. IMO there will be good CB and TE prospects in later rounds. A good read on Carriker is on the Dan Leberfield blog on wfan.com. Also read the Huddle report on Carriker.
