Yet yesterday you were saying there's no one worth it after 17...make up your mind. If there was no one worth it, why care what we do with the picks? Yesterday's opinion after Revis contradicts with today's opinion mainly because you kept whining about how we can't stop the run, then we appease you by taking Harris...yet it's still not good enough. I know someone asked what the definition of a message board of, but the fact this is a place for "fans" usually means we should be optimistic, yet that's so rare for it to actually happen...it's like it's the only place most of you come to complain about everything and say how we have "no chance" or whatever. Didn't we have "no chance" last year? Ugh. The only people right were the optimists, what does that tell you?
It's a numbers game. We gave way tooooo many picks. I do like the first two picks but there are 4 potential good player on other teams. These two guys better show up to play. If they don't start the draft will be a considered a bust. :jets:
I'm usually the first guy to bitch about "The Draft that could have been", but honestly, I don't think we really missed out on much. When you look at the guys available for us at the end of round 2, it wasn't a very impressive selection of players. I'm kind of so-so on the draft, but that's pretty much because my hopes of trading down for Blalock/Grubbs was foiled. You spend 3 months thinking of different draft scenerios, all of which involve trading down, and it is a bit shocking to see things end up the way they did. I think we did ok, but I think the Jets, and Pats should have switched draft strategies-- us going for quantity, them going for quality. Baffling, but I think we did ok.
Im surprised noone in this thread has mentioned Greg Olsen. He was there. I would have hated that pick but i feel like there was a big following for him.
I would've traded down 2-3 spots and selected Staley, and drafted BPA the res of the way creating better depth across the entire roster. I love Revis and Harris as players, but i do not love how overall depth on the roster was not truly addressed.
You and me both. W/ that said I'm thrilled we actually took one in the 6th round. Aside from Ferguson and Mangold(who i dont really count cause theyw ere day 1 starters) we had not taken a developmental type OL since Jones, and before that Yovanovits. Scary.
Cavka as well. Bender looks like a nice pick, and we also have signed some good UDFAs in Blanton and Brandon Moore over the past 5 years, along with guys like Snell and Ofenhusle who didn't work out. An RT would have been nice, but picking Staley in round 1 would be a waste in my mind since we can't use him at LT. There was no Marcus McNeil in round 2 this year, I don't think. I am glad we spent one pick on an o-lineman like Bender who sounds like a total steal, and I don't think the difference between him and a guy in round 2 or 3 is that big this year.
I actually think we got good depth in defense. I doubt that we would draft another o-lineman in the first round again. I'm very happy with Revis and Harris. I would much rather see these 2 exciting players then Blalock or Olsen or who ever we would have gotten with our very LATE 2nd rounders.
Depth was addressed during free agency; we have enough defensive linemen (Ellis, von Oelhoffen, Coleman, Wadsworth, Pouha, D-Rob) and linebackers (Hobson, Harris, Barton, Vilma, Thomas, Schlegel, Kassel, Chatham) to fill TWO front sevens. You can't give that many people serious burn. Go ahead and write off D-Rob, but he was coming on last year in the new system. If you wanted Alan Branch, the physically gifted yet unproductive player with a questionable work ethic, you would have no guarantee of a replacement. EVERY SINGLE TEAM passed on him in the first round; don't you think there was something to that? Players not nearly as talented as he was went before him, and teams opted for two other guys who PLAYED HIS POSITION (Okoye, Harrell). Anyone who says we didn't address O-line obviously hasn't read the write-ups on this kid Bender. We drafted him for a reason; there were bigger-name players we passed on (Ben Patrick, Brandon Siler), but chose him instead. He played at a lower level of competition, but totally dominated it; there is no real knock on him in the scouting report. People manage to fly under the radar, and we may have found one of those guys. Seriously, give this thing some time to pan out before we all shit on what the front office decided to do. I think we learned from last year that Tannenbaum and Mangini know what they're doing more often (Ferguson, Mangold, Washington) than not (Schlegel).
And if they do start then the draft was a success. So we'll see. Anyways, as for the question "What if we stayed put?" The answer is, we would've taken guys that Tanenbaum was not excited about. He obviously wanted Revis and Harris or else he wouldn't have given up all those picks.
For everyone who said we could have drafted Spencer keep in mind Dallas traded up to get him which means they probably would have traded in front of us to get him and that means we would have still had to have traded up to get him. Pity because I think he is going to be a player. I have been an advocate of trading back and trying to acquire another first rounder next year but without trading in any way I would have picked: 025 - Alan Branch 059 - Dan Bazuin 063 - Usama Young 089 - Anthony Waters 164 - Jacob Bender 191 - Courtney Taylor 212 - Ben Patrick Even that wouldn't be a very exciting draft so I am pretty happy with our picks and only slightly disappointed by the lack of depth.
Yeah, Dallas might have taken Spencer on the 22 with a 3-4 team sitting a few picks behind them. Personally I think Jerry Jones likes to deal too much and they probably would have done the Quinn deal with the Browns anyway. I'd have liked to have Thomas-Spencer as our bookend OLB's. That's a big, fast duo and would have masked some of the deficiencies on the line. Instead Dallas will wind up with DeMarcus Ware and Spencer. Maybe Ellis for one more year and then Spencer.
hmm..first, I would have traded down to later in the first or the second if possible which in no way contradicts what i said yesterday and second, i saw no reason why we shouldn't have had a good team last year. In 04 we almost made the afc championshio games and 05 we were decimated by injuries. If the team stayed healthy last year with the schedule we had why wouldn't we be successful?
I think everyone that was so against Olsen should have loved this draft. The way the first round played out, IMO it would have been either Olsen or Harris at 25, if we couldn't trade down.
