I think the Devils name is fine if only because it was never changed from NY and the Devils name itself is owned by NJ to a degree anyway. The term Jersey Devil goes back 200 years and is used to describe tiny little tornados that crop up in the summer.
Sounds like a posturing move to me...If you think of the State as it's own entity, from the perspective of New York these teams are profiting on your name, and there's no way for them to try and take money from the revenue stream because the term is not trademarked......and they aren't within NY's jurisdiction to tax either. If it goes away i betcha a good faith charitable donation to the state of NY from the Jets will follow or precede.
the teams represent the city, not the state. they have no jurisdiction. besides, the 'buffalo' bills play 35 miles from buffalo. the meadowlands is only 7 miles from new york city. now you can see why the state legislature is filled with idiots....:shit:
I'm all for switching to NJ. I'm NJ born and bred. I agree with you though. Politicains will try any publicity stunt/BS legislation if it thinks it'll garner them votes. NY has no ability to pull this off. NJ did, because if they were really stubborn about it, they could refuse to provide state funding and preferential tax treatment. Of course, if we did that, we may have lost one or both teams.
Wow that's is actually pretty funny, I mean aren't they now the Anaheim Angels of Orange County of Los Angeles of California of United States of America of North America of Northern Hemisphere of Western Hemisphere of Earth? Seriously why do these 2 jackass have jobs in the government if this is what they are coming up with?
Then Buffalo must change it's name to "Orchard Park Bills." Dallas is now the "Irving Cowboys" Lets not forget about the "Landover Redskins" The Bills will be in Toronto soon anyway.
just annex the city to NJ (all the Islands), NY can keep the Bronx. it can still be called NYC a la KC in Missou. problem solved. i recall yrs ago, Staten Island (garbage island) trying to become part of NJ....thanks for nothing.
I don't get it, I lived in NYC, whenever I called anyone in Queens I had to dial 718, since when is Queens part of NYC?
I think they should be called NJ Jets. They play there and no longer have any ties with NY except us fans. They are now only using the NY name to draw NY fans. It does not really matter I will always be a fan!
I am sorry i have been a fan since a child and i just dont get how you guys can sit there and say, go ahead and just change the name...dont get me wrong changed or not i am a die hard fan, but theres no way i am gonna just sit here and say that i want them to be a NJ team, fuck that. How can you just change history like that. A team that was created and built in NY, dateing back to the new york titans, I just couldnt sit there and say it would be something i want. The jets are not gonna change, if it were really an issue it would be all over the news and sportscenter and any other sports broadcastings...As far as i know its the new york tax dollars that pay for the stadiums needs and the teams needs, and its the New York fans that are the ones who consistantly bring in revenue to the team and i personally feel strongly against this idea, and just don't see it being passed.
Really. The Devils are my saving grace as a sports fan. If not for them, all my teams would be a giant shithole dating back to 1988, save for a few moments here and there.
Are you really serious? New York City is comprised of five boros: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Although when most people refer to New York City, they are thinking Manhattan boro.
That's a gross mis characterization. The Jets wanted a sweet heart deal and a land grab that would have been a major inconvenience to a booming Manhattan that certainly was not in need of the problems this stadium would cause. Multiple studies have shown little if any economic benefit from incentive laden stadium deals in the past. That's because the jobs they provide are typically below the level of heavy taxation and the breaks they get present a large opportunity cost. This was all about Woody Johnson increasing the value of his franchise. It's probably why he bought the team in the first place. The Jets have had ample opportunities to return to New York and build a world class facility in Queens, which is good enough for the Mets and US Open, but apparently not for the Jets. As soon as the WSS got struck down, they struck the best deal they could in Jersey, despite Jay Cross' patronizing crap about how "The Jets belong in New York."
Although I wasn't a fan of the railyard plan, I just find it terribly ironic that the Jets BEGGED to stay within State and City boundaries and couldn't garner enough political support to do it. If I were Woody Johnson, I would be writing to the proponent of the bill and cavalierly telling the guy to go $%*# himself, with a copy to the Post for front page publication.
Perfectly said. Sheldon Silver may be corrupt, but an honest politician would have voted against the WSS anyway. If Woody wanted a stadium in Manhattan, he should have put up more of his money. Instead, he demanded $300 million from the city and state. When they said no, got our hopes up with the Queens "deal," then tucked tail and ran home to Jersey. I hate our owner.
