Abraham whisked to Atlanta for 2-day visit

Jets defensive end John Abraham flew to Atlanta Wednesday night on Falcons owner Arthur Blank's private jet and will visit with the team through today, according to his agent, Tony Agnone.

The Jets have given Abraham permission to seek a trade and they want Falcons backup quarterback Matt Schaub if Atlanta can strike a deal with Abraham. But the Falcons have said they have no intention of dealing Schaub, a favorite of Blank and an insurance policy for starter Michael Vick.

Atlanta is said to be willing to offer a third- or perhaps second-round pick for Abraham. NFL insiders say the ceiling was set this week -- when the Vikings traded quarterback Dante Culpepper to Miami for a second-rounder -- and getting a second-rounder for Abraham would be considered a good deal.

If Abraham reaches a long-term agreement with the Falcons, it's up to Atlanta and the Jets to work out a trade. The Jets are said to be seeking a first-round pick but the Falcons are also believed to be unwilling to part with their first-round selection (15th overall), in addition to not wanting to part with Schaub.

Seattle, which has the 31st pick in the first round, is also in the mix for Abraham, and Washington may still be interested although it signed DE/LB Andre Carter this week. The Redskins could put together a package including quarterback Patrick Ramsey and a player or draft pick. Abraham has visited both teams.

Agnone said Abraham may visit the Raiders this weekend.

Meanwhile, the Bucs have entered the bidding for Ramsey as Washington has granted Ramsey permission to visit Tampa Bay. Cincinnati and Miami have also expressed interest in the quarterback. Washington is said to be asking for a fourth-round pick. The Jets have offered a seventh-round selection.

The Jets have other options at quarterback. Several veterans are on the market, including Aaron Brooks, Kerry Collins and Brian Griese, while Joey Harrington is expected to be released. And, the club could draft Vanderbilt's Jay Cutler at No. 4 or trade up to No. 2 and select USC's Matt Leinart.

Notes: T Tom Ashworth, who visited the Jets last weekend, is still undecided, said his agent, Tom Mills. Miami and Tampa Bay are other possible destinations.... Raiders CB Reynaldo Hill visited yesterday but signed with Miami later in the day.... WR/PR Tim Dwight may visit in the coming days.... Jets TE Chris Baker, who has visited Miami, Carolina and Oakland, is said to have narrowed his choices to the Jets and Miami.... Ex-Jet LT Jason Fabini visited Buffalo yesterday.

March 17, 2006 -- JACKSONVILLE - It's still relatively early in the offseason game, but the way maneuvers around the league have been transpiring, things have not exactly fallen the right way for the Jets.

At the moment, they seem to be one of the few teams around the league with pressing quarterback issues and they're shopping around disgruntled franchised DE John Abraham with seemingly no legitimate suitors for their price.

While Abraham's whirlwind visitation tour had him in Atlanta yesterday talking to the Falcons, one day after he was wined and dined in Seattle, multiple sources around the league told The Post that the Jets' asking price for him appears too high.

The Jets have been adamant about landing a first-round draft pick for Abraham, whom Oakland is now interested in. Of late, they've talked to the Falcons about using Abraham in a trade for backup quarterback Matt Schaub to no avail. More on Schaub in a moment.

"They might have to settle for a second-round draft pick for Abraham," one prominent league source told The Post. "I don't think anyone's going to give them a first-round pick for him."

Denver, who was interested in Abraham has two first-round draft picks, including the 29th overall pick, and still the Jets and Broncos could not come to a trade agreement, presumably because Denver didn't want to part with either of its first-round picks.

The Jets' problem, of course, is a serious lack of leverage.

Everyone in the league knows the Jets have no interest whatsoever in retaining Abraham, particularly since they're switching to a 3-4 defense as their base front.

And, everyone in the league knows that Abraham, ticked off about being franchised for the second consecutive year, has no interest in remaining with the Jets. Abraham's harsh comments told to the Post's Steve Serby several weeks ago pretty much severed any ties he has with the team.

A problem with the Atlanta-Jets negotiation, about which "talks are ongoing," according to a source familiar with the negotiations, was that the Jets don't possess what the Falcons need if they're going to trade Schaub.

Atlanta, according to sources with intimate knowledge of its thinking, refuses to part with Schaub unless it can get a legitimate backup who can win games in case starter Michael Vick is injured.

The Falcons have two things the Jets would love to wrest away with Abraham as bait: either the Falcons' 15th overall first-round pick or Schaub.

They're not parting with the pick or Schaub.

In fact, Falcon management has marching orders from team owner Arthur Blank not to move Schaub unless they get a can't-miss backup in return because Blank is petrified of being in same spot as he was in 2003 when Vick was injured early in the season and Doug Johnson took over and floundered, ruining the season.

"They have to get a credible backup that can win football games, not just another guy," a source said.

Jets defensive end John Abraham, in the third stop on his free-agent tour, arrived in Atlanta yesterday and visited with the Falcons. He dined with team officials and will take a physical today.

Abraham, who also has visited with the Redskins and Seahawks, hopes to wrap up his search for a new team in the coming days. The front-runners appear to be the Falcons and Seahawks, with the Broncos and Raiders showing some interest. The Redskins are out of the hunt.

Because he was tagged as a franchise player, Abraham must work a sign-and-trade with the Jets and his prospective new team. The Jets are believed to be seeking a first-round pick. In discussions with Atlanta, the Jets have tried to trade for backup quarterback Matt Schaub, but the Falcons seem unwilling to part with him.

The Falcons have not been turned off by Abraham's contract demands, believed to be $18 million in guarantees, so there still is hope for a deal. If they can't get Schaub, the Jets almost certainly will demand the Falcons' first-round pick (15th overall). The Seahawks own the 31st choice in Round 1.

Meanwhile, the Jets visited with former Raiders cornerback Renaldo Hill, but he wound up signing with the Dolphins.

In their ongoing game of anti-musical chairs, the Jets want the music to stop so someone, anyone sits down in their QB meeting room.

The Internet rumor mill Wednesday morning churned out word of the Jets and Atlanta feverishly working on a deal that would send defensive end John Abraham to the Falcons for backup QB Matt Schaub and the Falcons' second-round pick.

But an NFL source defused that rumor, saying, "You need to know that the owner of the Falcons [Arthur Blank] is a big fan of Schaub's and is not going to just let him go."

Then in the afternoon, a Washington newspaper floated the next rumor, that the Jets and Redskins had resumed talks to complete their long-discussed trade of 'Skins backup Patrick Ramsey.

But a Redskins source told a competing outlet the story was wrong and that Tampa Bay and Cincinnati have been added to Detroit and Miami as possible trading partners besides the Jets for Ramsey.

The Jets have a similar situation playing out at a lower-profile position as they seek a backup wide receiver/punt returner.

Tim Dwight, who has eight years of NFL experience and spent last season with Jets coach Eric Mangini at New England, is scheduled to visit the Jets on Monday.

Dwight has already met with Jacksonville and is planning to travel to Pittsburgh and Seattle. And the Patriots still want to re-sign him.

Yet Antonio Chatman, younger, faster and slightly bigger but with lower career averages, received a contract offer from the Jets after his Tuesday visit.

However, Chatman, cut by Green Bay, hasn't accepted the deal. He'll still visit Cincinnati and Seattle, with Baltimore also in the mix.

BRIEFS: Tight end Chris Baker met with Miami on Tuesday and was scheduled to talk with Oakland on Wednesday and today, then to Carolina. The Jets still want to re-sign Baker.

DT Monsanto Pope (Denver) came in for a chat with the Jets. ... TE Jerame Tuman, who visited Tuesday, agreed to re-sign with Pittsburgh.

The agent for LB Brad Kassell (Tennessee) is talking contract with the Jets and two other teams. ... Someone familiar with the Jets' thinking said there is no interest in a reunion with wideout Keyshawn Johnson, released by Dallas.

Troy brown has not visited the jets

As for Brown, contrary to published reports, his representatives at Las Vegas-based Premier Sports Management said he did not meet with the New York Jets yesterday. Brown's reps declined comment when asked what visits he has scheduled.
Multiple sources close to Brown said the receiver has yet to hear from the Patriots and is miffed at a perceived lack of respect after 13 years of service to the organization. Those sources say he's prepared not to duplicate last offseason, when he spurned more money from the New Orleans Saints to return to the Pats.
Regardless of where Brown was yesterday, a meeting with the Jets wouldn't come as a surprise. New Jets coach Eric Mangini, the former Patriots defensive coordinator, has already signed special teamer Matt Chatham and has been in the market for at least three other Patriots -- McGinest, offensive lineman Tom Ashworth and wideout Tim Dwight.

Chatman (5 feet 9) and Dwight (5-8) are small, speedy receivers who are also both accomplished return specialists. Chatman already has visited with the Jets and was to meet with the Cincinnati Bengals today.

Chatman and Dwight each averaged 8.5 yards per punt return in 2005. Chatman had the league's longest return, an 85-yard touchdown.

No Seahawk averaged better than 5.8 yards a return last season.

Chatman was the Packers' No. 2 receiver in 2005, with 49 catches for 549 yards and four touchdowns. His agent said the Packers don't want him back because they are changing their offense under new coach Mike McCarthy and seek bigger receivers.

I don't know who's talking to who, but I think our leverage in getting a first rounder for Abe comes from the fact that multiple teams want him and he's good. I will be surprised and pissed if we do not get a first for him. And not the 31st first either.
