Its the precedent that they would be setting that matters. Kendal signed the deal to make the 1.7 this season. If the Tannenbaum gives in and renegotiates now -- eventhough it wont be for alot more money, as you point out -- it will open a Pandora's Box of contract disputes. There are several key players -- particularly among the LBs, Hobson, Vilma, and Barton -- who are going to be looking at getting a new deal or will be looking to renegotiate in the last year of their contract after or during this season. Giving in to Kendall will more or less force the Jets to give in to these guys, trade them, or let them go. Keeping them at a price the team likes or can stomach will be out of the question if they cant hold an aging OG to his current contract.
It is when you sign a contract and receive guaranteed up front money. If you want the security of a large signing bonus and a multi-year deal, then you accept playing for a lower yearly salary. If you want more money each year, then you accept the risk and play on a series of one year deals. It's fine that you've been able to negotiate raises, but I'm sure you didn't receive a 7 figure signing bonus and any guaranteed money. Kendall's situation is completely unacceptable in my opinion. You don't take the bonus & agree to a long term contract, only to later hold out for even more money while holding on the guaranteed bonus money you received. If he really wants a new contract, he should pay back his signing bonus and any other guaranteed money he received, and then sit down and negotiate a new deal.
I found this when searching for his current contract details: Pete Kendall Changes Tune, Will Attend Jets Minicamp Posted Jun 4th 2007 10:31AM by Dan Benton Filed under: Jets, AFC East, New York Could this Pete Kendall/New York Jets battle finally be coming to an end? While I wouldn't go that far, it has made some slight progress. And no, the Jets didn't budge -- Kendall did. It's abundantly clear that New York is not going to renegotiate Kendall's contract and that seems to have finally sunk in. According to a report by the New York Daily News, Kendall's agent said the guard will in fact attend Jets mandatory minicamp. That's not to say this problem is solved, obviously. In fact, the Jets still seem to be preparing for his departure. They've been keeping a close on free agents Joe Andruzzi and Geno James and could make a move on one of the two in the very near future. Note: Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News believes this situation is largely the Jets fault. I have to disagree. Contracts are signed for a reason -- tough it out. If he doesn't like the pay, that's too bad. He should have thought about that before he slapped the John Hancock down on the paper. http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/06/04/pete-kendall-changes-tune-will-attend-jets-minicamp/
Good point Ambrose, At the end of the day this may less about Kendall may be more about a statement that the new Regime is trying to make. I believe the same way they were unwilling to overpay in free agency, they are not going to cave-in to the demands to renegotiate contracts. Let's see how this works out...
Maybe Mangini had one of his new "friends" put in a little call to Pete. Kendall: Hello? UNidentified: Yeah Petey, how ya doin? Kendall: Who is this? Unidentified: Yeah, listen, I think you really should get to mandatory camp, OK? Kendall: Who IS this? Unidentified: That's a nice camp your daughter is at. Really beautiful. Kendall: Why you little..... Unidentified: Have a nice day there, Petey. Click (Dial tone) Kendal: Hello?........................Hello?l
Tanngini is doing the right thing here. They cannot redo Kendall's contract due to setting bad precedent. Nor should they, due to his play and his age. He signed the conract, I'm sure every other guard in the league that hasn't signed a contract or extension in the last year or maybe 2 years is upset with what they're getting paid compared to the freeagents signed this offseason, as they should be. But thats the nature of the game. I also have a feeling that the staff likes atleast one of the younger guys enough to move them to starting in Kendalls spot, possibly a few of them to compete with Moore and Clement too. There is also a possiblity of a veteran they like too, ie Geno James or I've heard Woody may be cut also.
did dan post that under AOL Sports or MVN? im surprised he didnt make me aware of this... edit...he posted it in AOL Sports...all is good
He going to realize that no one is going ot pay him what he wants. Like I said, 280lbs lineman dont cut it anymore. He is too light. Put on some frickin weight Kendall and then maybe you could at least be a decent run blocker.
Peter King nails it. (and I hate to agree with him...but...) His 2001 deal in Arizonal was for 5 years, $18 million with a $5 million signing bonus, and he was drafted number 21 overall in 1996. He's done pretty well for a guard...
Bender, McChesney, Clarke, Blanton, Goddard, Jones, Smith, and I know there are others including undrafted free agents. Maybe Mangini thinks a couple of these guys could be starters at LG, RG, or RT. Thats why they did not really address the OL in the draft besides getting Bender in the 6th round.
And there you have it...with a shout to GreenGeek...all salary sleight of hand aside, the dude is making 2.825 million (almost 3 million) per season...a lot higher than the average guard's salary. While I do understand fair market value and asking for a raise if my value goes up, the 1.7 million figure bouncing around is just bullshit. We have the money and need to pay him an extra million and I'd say do it if it didn't spill out a whole can of worms in the process.
NO! we just can?t afford to just give him more money. I mean, he?s sitting at home and watching TV while ever other player on the team is working out on Minicamp and we should give him a raise for that!?! What would you think if you would be one of the other players? HE didn?t do anything to deserve a Raise, he didn?t play better than expected. This is a buisness, if you would run a buisness, and one of your employees is knocking at your door and says: "Hi Boss, ahm, some of my buddy?s are getting a big raise, now i also want more money, not that much just about ahm, let?s say about 60% more."?
ok quick question, whoever his replacement is will hamper the team this yr compared to what kendall can offer. ALSO, what if kendalls replacement goes down? then were really fucked. pay him an extra MIL groom his replacement now or draft early next yr. then release him after this yr.
doesn?t matter, think about the Lockerroom talks if we play him. there will be more than one player skipping next years camp if they see this is working.
Maybe his replacement has been groomed already. And Kendall is not a strong run blocker so maybe his replacement won't hamper the team as much as you think. That being said I like Kendall for his intangibles. But if we can upgrade we need to.
I think the Jets should welcome him back if he plays to the contract he has, but give every O-Lineman who was at the voluntary cap a symbolic $1,000.00 raise.
