Well..I've been saying up waiting for my lovely daughter to come home on Spring Break. She's a freshman down in North Carolina and she has a 12 hour trip home..but she made it! So good night and I look forward to seeing you on line. PS: My Aunt lives in Falls Church, VA and her kids are huge Skins fans..so we have these discussions in person too Nite All.
We moved into our current home expecting that we wouldn't be staying long. That was 25 years ago. We've stayed because we love the neighborhood. I think you're right that Ramsey wanted the Jets because there's a good chance he can start here this year even if you draft a new QB. Going into it, both sides understand that this is a temporary position. But we never know how things will play out.
im so glad we didnt fold and give up more than a 6th rounder for ramsey. great job mangini and the rest of the club
Unless the Jets show considerable improvement in pass protection, any QB you put behind center will look like a career backup who makes bad decisions. Slow release? I haven't heard that rap before about Patrick. On local TV during the 2004 training camp, we Skins' fans saw video of Ramsey and Brunell, side by side, taking simultaneous snaps. On two slant patterns, the results were identical: Patrick took his seven-step drop and had the pass away before Brunell could get his arm cocked. If your front office wanted only depth, there are 30 other QBs available they could have had for less money and without having to give up a draft pick.
I've been lurking on your board recently wondering the same thing. If young Schottenheimer wants to spread and stretch the field, Ramsey has the arm to do it. What he did at San Diego doesn't tell you a whole lot because he was limited there by the barely adequate arm strength of Drew Brees. That your people were after Schuab and Ramsey could be a clue since both throw with good velocity. The ball gets to the receiver quickly.
Yes, but I don't want a "productive starter". Trent Dilfer is a Productive starter!! I want a game changing starter. Young, Leinart, Cutler...
Young...if you want to build your offense around him and hope that he doesn't go down because, if he does, you're screwed. Leinart...a game changing starter if he brings his USC teammates with him. Cutler...raw talent: Patrick Ramsey with no NFL experience.
I like the Ramsey trade. It makes the Jets a better team. If, and I realize that is a big if, but if Ramsey can receive the right coaching, he could end up being quite an assett to the team. But it will take a bit of time. He needs to start working with the coaching staff right now.
well he is gonna have year to earn that new contract so we will see.. i personally dont have the faith in ramsey as much as you do. but i look at it 2 ways he does bad we have a shot at adrian peterson. he does good we have some trade bait or we have a new qb.. so ethier way its a win win to me.
Spurrier made him his starter after having him compete with two Gator QBs. How's that giving up on him? The only Redskin coach who gave up on him was Joe Gibbs, and he did that before he ever saw him play live. Still, he temporarily named Ramsey his starter after Patrick clearly outplayed Brunell in 2004.
how is throwing 29 interceptions in 34 games outplaying anyone. Dont get me wrong im not couting ramsey out.. but untill he proves diffrent he doesnt deserve the hype.
Ramsey's in the final year of his contract, unless he signs an extension...which is not in his best interests... he'll be a UFA after this season. But, if this works out well for the team and the player, it gives both another option for the future.
He won the starting job in 2002 - 3 with Spurrier. He won the starting job in 2004 with Gibbs. That's evidence that he outplayed his competition for the job. 29 Ints in 34 starts would be outstanding for a young QB, but your numbers are wrong. He hasn't started 34 games. He started 23 games 2002 - 2004. He started our opening game last season, went out with a neck injury early in the second quarter and never started again in 2005. His TD to Int ratio is 34/29 which isn't bad when you consider the way he was pounded and that Bradshaw, Favre and Elway all had worse stats at the same stage of their career.
What a great thread. First thread I have read in its entirety in many moons. Tough to get a grasp on who Ramsey really is. With that said, as far as the Jets are concerned, the bottom line is that we now have a front office that has a gameplan. Was their plan that by trading for Ramsey they would now have two viable veteran Qb's with question marks all over them...and that at least one will prosper? As a starter? Or as an eventual backup to whoever is drafted this year? Who really knows. My personal belief is that this front office has a plan. Whether it works or doesnt only the future will tell us. I do really believe that they have never had a desire to draft a Qb with the the 4th pick. Thats not where they want to take a chance on a pick that if a bust, would set the franchise back a couple years. The head coach is a defensive guy...and the defense is ahead of the offense at this point. Taking an offensive lineman wouldn't surprise me because thats how you control the ball and the clock..something defensive minds respect. Show me a Qb with time to throw the ball and I will show you an average Qb that just became above average. I just think that EM/MT have no real desire to pick a Qb. They went after Ramsey...they went after Schuab...they went after Kitna. If they were drafting a Qb, why would you want Bollinger, Pennington and Kitna, Schuab, Ramsey on your roster when this year would be a throwaway year anyway while your pick is being groomed. If the Jets were picking a Qb...would any Jet fans be upset if the Jets went into the season with Bollinger as your starting QB? Pennington? Not saying I totally agree with the above, just stating what they may be thinking. If none of the above qb's take the lead this year, they will go after their QB in earnest in free agency next year or a trade. They will use this draft to either replace Abe (Williams), sure up the offensive line (Dbrick) or surpise us with a pick from left field (running back, linebacker). Probably wrong...but thats how I see their body language this offseason.
When I talk about how fast a release is, it includes decision making time. Ramsey gets the happy feet and starts patting the ball. I agree, unless the o line here gets fixed, no QB is goung to play well. Having said that, the reference to a practice film does nothing to emphasis Ramsey's problems. In game conditions, the Skins now have two coaches that thought Ramsey was a bust. Two HC's with reps for knowing QB's. Game conditions under a rush are not the same as throwing outs on the practice field. Yes, they wanted a solid #2 QB, and there aren't 30 of them out there. A sixth round pick? That's free.
When most people talk about a QBs release, they're talking mechanics, so I didn't understand what you meant. Perhaps you might explain to me how a spectator can tell that a QB is holding the ball too long. Unless you know how long the play takes to develop, how can you tell? One of the problems of the Spurrier system was that he wanted his QB to look deep as his first option on nearly every down. It takes time for the receiver to get downfield. How do you figure that Spurrier thought Ramsey was a bust? After starting his Florida players, Weurfel and Matthews, he made Ramsey his starting QB and stuck with him. Gibbs doesn't like Patrick's game...no doubt about that. Joe isn't a patient man with young QBs. But, after Brunell failed in 2004, Ramsey started and clearly won the job until he went down with a minor neck sprain early in the opening game of 2005.
