17. Woody Johnson, Jets To Johnson's credit, he tries hard and seems to have scored with last year's hiring of Eric Mangini as coach. But Johnson's peers don't believe he's especially deft when it comes to high-level business maneuvers. Though his joint deal with the Giants on the new stadium in Jersey is a 50-50 proposition on paper, many NFL insiders think he got played. "Because it's in Giants' country, the Jets will still be second-class citizens there," says one owner. "He should've figured out how to do a Westside stadium. It's New York -- you could get people to build one out there." http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/michael_silver/06/27/ownerrankings/index.html He is right when he says we will always be second class citizens in that stadium....
"He should've figured out how to do a Westside stadium. It's New York -- you could get people to build one out there." Some of the best businessmen in the world, let alone the NFL, have tried and failed to build something on the Westside. It will still be a vast wasteland 30 years from now. As for the list, total ass kissing for access on the part of Michael Silver. How has Dan Snyder been anything but a miserable failure as owners go? So, he has the most valuable franchise, but the bottom line in this business is winning and the Deadskins have done little of that in Snyders tenure.
I think from last year onwards he has done well , purely by hiring Mangini and linking him up with Tannenbaum. Take this poll 2 years ago and hes at #20+ I'd be interested to see if Champ agrees , Woody at 17?
Stupid article. I like Woody today for firing Mangini. I will dislike him for years for moving everything to Jersey. For the record he is not on my Christmas card list!
I would not care if a new stadium was in Queens, Brooklyn or even Yonkers, but the Jets should be playing in NY.
I'm a bit concerned that other owners don't think Woody is a deft businessman. As a suporter of the WSS - I think Woody NEVER wanted it! He didn't even consider Queens, which IMO confirms that as a NJ Native, Woody wanted to create a NJ Jets franchise. He get kudos of course for stepping out and hiring the young unproven Man-Genius...and also for forcing Herm's hand (although most of us believe he got played there too).
Says that Woody isn't respected for his business acumen, but what about his co-authoring a solution to the collective bargaining stalement last year with the son of Robert Kraft of the Patriots? He shouldn't have mentioned that, but didn't, likely because he doesn't know about it, which means he's trying to do a quick and dirty piece to get his click hits up on the site....Silver is crap!
The article loses all creditiblity when you see the trio of Dan Snyder, Bob McNair and Wayne Huzienga in the top 10. My top 5 would look like this Jerry Jones Robert Kraft Dan Rooney Pat Bowlen Jeff Lurie Bottom 5 Zygi Wilf Randy Lerner Tom Benson William Ford Bill Bidwell (the worst owner in all of sports)
Im actually surprised Dan Snyder is that far down on the list. Owners are judged by the fans by how much they win or lose. But the owner's ultimate goal is to make money, not necessarily win. Now, in most cases, winning and money come hand in hand. However, over in Washington Snyder hasn't had to win to make money. His franchise is more valuable than the Pats, Lakers, Steelers, and every other sports franchise in America. Thus, he is a great owner. It's like owning a store. Everyone who comes into the store feels like they got helped well and the customer service was great, but perhaps the owner doesn't get a lot of money out of it. He is NOT a good owner. But if there was a store where the customers werent necessarily happy but they still came in and bought a lot of things and the owner made a fortune, that owner is great, or at least rich.
So you think Woody spent all those millions of dollars and years of his life trying to get WSS bc he really wanted to be in NJ? He may not be the best owner, but do you really think he would be so foolish to devote all that time, energy & money to the WSS? If he wanted to be in NJ what is the logic or the pursuit of the WSS? Also, how exactly did he get played with the depature of Herm? He unloaded a deadbeat coach and got Leon Washington in return. I would do make that deal anytime.
I'm talking about from a fan's perspective. Every time the Redskins take a step forward, Snyder takes 5 steps back. He makes very stupid deals and is way too rash in his decision-making. Yes, the Redskins make money and he's a success on that end. But maybe he's just riding the coattails of a very loyal fan base. Either way, from the fan's perspective, he is not a good owner. If I was a Redskins fan, I would want someone else in charge.
