Training Camp: Players To Watch For - CB David BarrettJuly 20th, 2007 by Gary Grund CB - David Barrett The New York Jets signed free agent cornerback David Barrett in early March of 2004 to a six-year, $21 million contract. Barrett spent the first four seasons of his career with Arizona and collected 6 interceptions in 62 games before coming to the Jets via free agency. Barrett came to the Jets and had a nice season recording 77 tackles, bringing in 2 interceptions and deflecting 11 passes. The following season, the Jets brought in Ty Law to become their #1 cornerback and to play opposite David Barrett. With the addition of Ty Law, Barrett saw better numbers, grabbing 5 interceptions on the season in just 13 games. Barrett was questionable heading into the 2006 season with the Jets under new management and feared at being a potential cap casualty with a particularly high salary. Jets 2005 2nd-round pick Justin Miller battled with Barrett throughout training camp and preseason and beat David out of the starting job opposite Andre Dyson. Barrett recorded three interceptions while only starting three games and playing mostly as a reserve the majority of the season. After going through a nervous offseason, so far David Barrett hasn?t been moved by the team for his high salary yet. According to various reports through the media, Barrett performed exceptionally well in offseason team workouts and with that said it makes him a player to watch for as he tries to get his career back on track. The Jets traded up sixteen spots in the draft in April to grab cornerback Darrelle Revis which should help Revis in terms of competition at the position. Revis will undoubtedly rival Barrett for the starting cornerback spot opposite Andre Dyson along with Hank Poteat, Drew Coleman and Justin Miller. Knowing that Barrett performed well in offseason team workouts and knowing that Barrett will be pushed for the starting spot makes him a player to watch in training camp. It will be interesting to see what kind of impact he makes and if he will end up getting the nod out of preseason.
i have never been a fan of barrett. he reminds me of jason sehorn in his final years with the giants: a liability who allows big plays too often, but makes a big interception every so often and just seems to not go away because of it. he has had some big games and certainly some huge plays (playoffs against steelers) but otherwise he makes me angry 2-4 times a game
I won't. If memory serves, I think I read where Revis reportedly drew a lot of attention in minicamp and looked good in coverage against Cotchery. If he does well in TC, which he probably will, why wouldn't he earn the starting job? We've got NE right out of the box and somebody's got to step up and cover Moss. I get stomach pains just thinking about it.
Let's just all be thankful that the Drew Coleman: Starting Cornerback Tour has mercifully played its last date.
He wasn't horrible, you gotta get the slip up against Chicago outta your head. He was average, just decent to start for those few games with his lack of size. As a dime back who could blitz off the edge is fine, a special team gunner...That's what you gotta really expect from a 6th round pick.
I thought for a rookie Coleman played pretty well last year, besides the missed tackle in the Chicago game. He should add nice depth behind Dyson, Revis, and Barrett
I'm not blaming Coleman for being put in a tough spot, and he put in an admirable effort last season, but let's not pretend he was anything close to an "average" starting cornerback.
Never did I argue that he'd failed in this regard. I'm not sure how anything I said disagrees with this point.
Funny how some of us don't even talk about or consider Justin Miller still in the mix. I'm disappointed in Miller, but hope he can find a way to have a great camp this year. The guy really needs to pull his head out of his @ss and get with the program.
frankly i dont like barrett, miller or coleman at all, i think they were all liabilities out there and coleman was especially bad last year, even as a rookie, and showed little to nothing....dyson was very good and revis will need to be good this year
I agree that the physical tools are there for Miller, but he isn't exactly going to be squaring the circle or invoking Foucault any time soon. I simply don't think he possesses the mental acuity to digest Mangini's schemes. Let's be happy that he at least turned out to be a Pro Bowl kick returner.
Let's not forget that Barrett was playing injured for essentially the entire season. I think that he could still prove to be quite valuable as a nickleback.
