He said flat out he has zero desire to coach. As for him buying a team, here's a thought no one seems to be mentioning. How do any of us know how much money Curtis Martin has? He was making quite a bit of money when the internet bubble had the stock market climbing to ridiculous levels. It's very possible he smartly invested his money, and has a truckload of cash to spend right now. Keep in mind, he never even blinked when it came time for someone to renegotiate a contract to help the team. It's quite possible he wasn't worried about making less per year, simply because he had the money. He's been flat out talking about how he's viewed himself as an owner since the day he came into the league. Perhaps, unlike most guys who squander their money, he actually put his money to work for him with his sights on the future.
Well he certainly cannot buy a team by himself, hes only a rb.. Teams are not sportscar or something...
I don't think there's any way he can buy the Jets. Actually I know he can't. Not without a massive amount of financial backing. A team on the rise plus a new stadium = a lot of revenue. Johnson would have to be out of his mind to sell right now. :drunk:
I would not be shocked if he bought the Jets in a partnership deal with some billionaire. I'd be amazed that he could put the deal together but not shocked if Woody sold the Jets. The West Side Stadium was Woody's big goal and it fell through.
i listened to an interview on 1050 ESPN Radio this afternoon and he heavily implied that it wouldn't be the Jets. and this is what scared me: he said if he had a team, Eric Mangini would be his coach -- or at least, the first guy he goes after because Mangini is everything Martin stands for. to which the interviewer replied Jets fans would be nervous if Mangini becomes a Free Agent Coach. Martin said, "definitely." i think it's safe to say he'll go in on another team. cheers
If he had as much as is needed to buy an NFL team we would see his name every year on the Forbes list of world's richest people.
Like Herm did to Curtis? even though herm gave Curtis the balla LESS per game than Parcells/Groh? Woody's BS? please explain. Curtis wouldn't be a majority owner anyway so he won't be making day to day decisions. He would be invovled either in a group to purchase a team(not likely) or buy a portion of a team. You guy are going a little crazy w/ the speculation.
I heard you on the blitz yesterday. Just amazed that Schein and Miller had no idea what you were talking about. I figured after their break they would lead with the audio, but of course it wasn't mentioned again during my ride home.
I'd love to...Woody has shown time and again that he is running the Jets as a business, cutting costs here and there, saving money on coaches' contracts, even coming in under the salary cap. That's BS. A good owner looks at his team as a hobby and wants them to win. Granted that its good business to make sure your team is in the black, but penny-pinching has no place in the NFL. He should be maxing out the cap every year and throwing money at the best non-cap personnel ala Steinbrenner (within reason, of course). When we start winning, the money will come, and those few million under the cap won't make a difference anyway. To summarize, football clubs are supposed to be a pastime for rich dudes that want to win first, and a business second. Woody seems to have it backwards.
It would be BEYOND cool if C-mart owned the jets. it would be quite an awesome day. Anyways, when is this expect announcement to take place? Obviously i would prefer the team to be the Jets, but even if it's not i would want Curtis to go far. So Best of Luck to you Curtis!
Hmmm, by that logic you would also have to criticize Kraft and the Patriots who has pretty much run his team like a business as well. Up until this year they have repeatedly stayed well below the cap and have pinched every penny they could where contracts and free agency were concerned. How many Super Bowls did that win them? I'm all for Woody running it like a business. It has already been alluded to that they are following the Patriot model. Not sure what there is to bitch about that, but I am sure you will find something. :breakdance:
Martin said that his 3 home bases were New York, Atlanta, and Miami, so I would expect the team he is trying to buy a share of is near one of those cities. PS - First Post!
And a good one at that. I was actually thinking it might be Miami, wasn't Huizenga trying to sell them a few years back? That would certainly sting for us Jet fans, that one of our greatest players of all time would own one of our biggest rivals of all time...
It could very well be Atlanta too...that sorry ass franchise can't even sell out the NFC title game when it's at home. That and the fact Vick is probably gone for good will mean they get about 50,000 fans a game this year. I'm sure the owner would be more then willing to sell of a piece of the team to some sucker.
really i guess the partners just cant sign money over to curtis just to have him on paper as a sole owner? it can be done.
