one of my fondest memories... " that's a deep drive ... caught by the shortstop " Priceless Scooter broadcasting... ahh so many... sad to see him go.
Dam I liked that guy. Met him a few times (he had a house in Union , NJ a few down from a friend). Really nice guy. He was one of the few things that made Yankee games watchable back on WPIX. Now you can't even watch or listen without having night terrors. I'm really saddened by this, great guy and great Yankee.
For once Shade, I can't find a way to argue with you. You're right on. And you didn't even mention that Scooter had 10 times the personality Jeter will ever have.
Very sad day for the Yankees and Yankee fans. I grew up watching and listening to Scooter in the booth(they used to do radio and TV until soetime in the 80s). Nothing was better tha Scooter, White and Messer in the booth.
Currently, maybe... but this is niether the time nor the place for this discussion, at least not in this thread... another thread could be started for that discussion
Agreed. White, Rizzuto and Messer were incredible in the booth. This was before Phil left in the 7th and spent 2 hours talking about the pie he had for dessert the night before. I met Phil a couple of times too. Once he was a guest speaker at a conference and the other time I ran into him in an elevator with his wife. I walk into the elevator, hit my floor, look over and recognize him right away. I scream, "Holy Cow! Phil Rizzuto, its a pleasure to meet you. He shook my hand, said something about the concert T I was wearing and then went on his way. I was so excited I told the cab driver about it even though he barely spoke english and had no clue who he was. The scooter has laid down his last bunt. RIP....
Ty Cobb: My Life in Baseball w/ Al Stump "At shortstop, no discussion necessary. Phil Rizzuto, a throwback type with the Yankees, has been one of the few modern stars to excite my admiration,..."
And don't forget Pacino spoofing him in the beginning of Sea of Love. Truly a transcendent pop culture icon.
Scooter was truly one of a kind. I grew up with him being the Voice of the Yankees and will always remember his Quirky stories... Connoli's were never the same... R.I.P. Scooter
I find it amazing that you and ShadeTree would use news like this to carry out your irrational attacks on Jeter. Absolutely disgusting.
WTF are you talking about? I'm not going to speak for Shade, but: 1) We were not "carrying out our irrational attacks on Jeter" together. 2) Rizzuto was a better defensive player than Jeter. 3) Rizzuto won the MVP once, and came in second an additional time, Jeter has not. 4) Scooter is arguably a better player, and more integral to his team's success than Jeter. 5) Scooter DOES have more rings than Jeter, so there was no lie in Shade's statement. 6) I do not irrationally attack MY OWN TEAM'S shortstop. What's disgusting is assuming you know what you're talking about, when you haven't a clue.
WTF are we talking about? I would be willing to bet every cent I own that the man who you and shade are attempting to slander would AGREE with just about everything you have written. That's why he is such a model baselball player in an era that sorely needs one. He is probably the only player in baseball worthy to carry on the tradition that Rizzuto set forth.
