There has to be some degree of a deep threat to keep the DBs honest and prevent them from cheating up on the short throws. Schottie is going to have to mix it up to keep the defenses off balance. CP is going to have to pick his spots to throw downfield to Cotchery to keep the safties deeper. Also, if TJones can consistently establish the running game, it will make CP's play action that much more effective, and create opportunities to throw over the top. The deep game isnt his strength, but it has to be used to complement the parts of CP's game that are good.
AWESOME REPORT!!! I love having Revis finally here, and the fact that he seems to have fit straight in, mabey we will see him on the field this year after all
These kind of threads are the only ones that have inspired me to view the New York Jets Forum Board. Thanks again!!!!!
Good report, I was hoping to see Justin Miller doing a little more by now, but better to wait until he's fully healed instead of rushing things. Although many others have given up on the youngster, I'm still rooting that he w/ Revis can be our corner tandem for the next 5+ years. After seeing what happened to Denver, NYG and Baltimore I'm just pleased that we managed to get out of pre-season w/o any season ending injuries. Hopefully this week we can bounce back and put the Giants in there place at the end of the week.
Another great report, Jetcane. Thanks much. I'm glad you specifically mention Chad's performance, because I have to say that Friday night's fiasco shook my confidence in him again, just when I had regained some of it. I even emphasized Chad's positives in several posts last week, to include such phrases as "You don't have to worry about Chad this year." Now I'm not so certain, to the point where I almost feel foolish having posted such (seemingly) ridiculous optimism in lieu of Friday night's performance. Not a negative guy by any means, but Chad seemed to almost regress right before my eyes Friday night. I even waited until after the weekend to post this opinion, because I wanted to give it time to settle in my mind. While our O-line should take the brunt of why Chad felt so rushed during much of his series, the Star-Ledger on Saturday rightly chose the "R" word (rusty) in one of their descriptions of Chad's performance, among other worse adjectives. And it was simply poor judgement to release the ball while you're going down with someone tugging on your leg. This is a mistake you'd expect from a rookie. You either throw it away or you take the sack and protect the ball, but when you're on your own 25 or so (not sure), you don't try to complete that pass, especially if you're Chad Pennington. It's no wonder Mangini looked really pissed and had words for him on the sidelines, as rightfully he should. So, now, in my mind, we've got "rust" again? And the same Chinese Firedrill stuff (best example being the opener in Kansas City 24 months ago) resurfacing? I'm not at all comfortable with any of this. I've watched him in TC this year and yes, he does have better arm-strength. He's got more zip on his patented short-medium range balls. And yeah, Thomas Jones wasn't in the game Friday night in order for us to really see what effect that will have in helping Chad's performance. And yeah, Minnesota's defense is pretty damned good. But damn, I could be wrong, but I still think I saw that same "deer in the headlights" look about him on Friday night, and that's something that's got me extremely worried now. This is the declared starter (since February). No competition per se. And rehab is over. And plenty of off-season time to study. And enough reps in TC to eliminate "rust." And a damned good set of WR's and pass-catching TE's and RB's, in my opinion. And an O-line that's supposedly better now and gelling (although Friday night there were problems). But the bottom line is, there aren't many excuses left for Chad, unless it's all the O-line's fault. Yeah, you could probably hang your hat on some of that, but that sure as hell doesn't give anyone the right to hang the "rust" and "Chinese Firedrill" effects on them. That's all Chad, and I'm more than a litlle concerned with what I saw Friday night. Unless I see and almost flawless game from Chad this Saturday against the Giants, I'm going to really be uncomfortable facing the Patriots come September 9.
I think part of the problem was a lack of preparation, due to the fact that it's preseason. Chad's first pick was a bad coverage read, he just wasn't expecting Sharper to be there. His second pick was a bad decision; he was trying too hard to make something happen and should have held the ball. Hopefully, with more gameplanning to improve the protection and help him recognize the coverages better, he doesn't make those throws during the season.
I wonder what hap'd to Thunderbird? btw, so opening this isnt a total loss, the Jets cut ihedegbo, which is a good sign for ventrone I guess.
