Game 1: Chris Young (9-4, 1.93) vs. John Maine (13-7, 3.59) Game 2: Clay Hensley (2-3, 6.70) vs. Brian Lawrence (1-0, 5.06) Game 3: Jake Peavy (13-5, 2.19) vs. Tom Glavine (11-6, 4.12) We get Conine for two A-ball guys. I hate Jeff Conine.
Saw this coming from a mile away. Another "professional hitter" that "knows how to pinch hit". He's 6 or 7 years younger then Franco, I guess, but I was hoping the Mets would stay away from this kind of stuff when they let him go.
Not a bad move, gave up little & needed to replace Easley. While I am taking into account the first two posters' supreme negativity, I still don't quite get why they are ripping the Conine deal. The Mets were not going to get a stud in the prime of his career on August 20th. They acquired Conine for two minor leaguers who may never amount to anything. What's wrong with acquiring a "professional hitter" who has had postseason success? Let me ask you this- Would you rather see David Newhan or Jeff Conine step to the plate in the postseason?
I'm not ripping it I just think it was unnecessary. I'd prefer giving a guy like Ambres a shot to fill the role before rushing out and trading for another 40+ year old. Let's relax with the postseason success stuff too. He's had one good series and we're talking about 24 AB's there. Conine has been a really bad hitter the past 2 seasons and I don't think that's likely to change at this point.
Well, I could see that considering he was a Marlins player for so long. Otherwise, I don't see it. I thought Conine has been one of the good guys in baseball through the years. (It is possible I am forgetting something, but I don't recall him ever getting into any trouble.)
As a Reds fan, I was sorry to see Conine go, even though he had been platooned with Hatteburg. The guy knows how to hit, and has won it all. He'll be a good late season addition as a pinch hitter.
I sincerely hope neither of the guys we traded turns into anything, because I'm going to be pissed if we traded talent for conine.
Yis, the Reds have plenty of hitters in their system, I wouldn't worry about it. You'd have every reason to get mad if the Mets had given up some pitching prospects, though. Years of neglect by previous owners left the Reds with nothing to look forward to in developing pitchers, and that is what is needed most.
To be fair to Conine, he has been a pretty solid pinch hitter. (.269/.348/.437 for the career until '06; .409/.481/.500 in 22 AB this season). For comparison, Easley was only .150/.242/.283 on the career and .211/.400/.474 this season. Obviously, I'd still rather have Easley, but that ain't happening. I like the Conine trade though. One big hit by Ambres doesn't make me trust him enough for a trial by fire.
Suddenly the Mets have the 3rd best record in baseball, best in the NL, 17 games over .500. The best road record in the MLs, the biggest division lead in baseball.. Doesn't look so bad today..
agreed, but not that I want to be Cpt Obvious or anything......don't really think the 5 game lead means much right now because they have the Philly/Atlanta road trip coming up after this homestand....if they come out of that with a 4 or 5 game lead, then I'll start feeling better.....still don't trust this team entirely (bullpen!)
He's also got a .450 BAbip in those 22 PH AB's this season. I'm not going to go too crazy about this but it just feels like when the Mets got Roberto Hernandez last year, minus the part where they steal a talented young pitcher in the deal.
Unless this game ends early because of the rain, Maine once again is going to tax the bullpen. I'd love to know what has suddenly happened to him in the last four games - he's unable to put anyone away.
I wonder if it is just simply the fact that his arm is tired from the amount of innings he has pitched. I'm pretty sure he has already pitched a career high in IPs. If that is the case & I hope it is it would make sense to give his some rest & get him fresh for the playoffs..
