I am finally watching the NFL Network replay of the Jets/Giants game. What a monumental mess on the starting O-Line. While I am not one to put too much stock in pre-season...there is a serious lack of talent there. I think between now and the NE game, Mikey T has his work cut out for him to bring in some offensive line help. Whether picking up a cut from another team or making a trade, there is no question they need experienced solid bodies to keep Pennington upright and open up some holes from the RBs. I am not overly concerned with the defense, but I am worried about Chad surviving week 1. I remember hearing an interview with Tannenbaum over the winter where he said he would look for every opportunity to improve these team. It is time to see if that was just rhetoric or if Tanny is gonna go out and get someone to help. DbJ
I think we need to use McCareins as bait. Yes, I'd love to keep him, but a LG is more important than a 3rd or 4th receiver.
everyone is talking about bender, yet there is no thread about Brick being a damn turnstyle. We knew we couldn't run block (well know in the draft) but he was supposed to be the best pass blocker in years. yet every game he has middle of the road pass rushers run right by him, or through him to kill our qb about 2-3 times a game. How about what a waste of the 4th overall pick he was.
We should try to use some of the extra picks we've got to get some o-line help. Looking at our first few opponents, Chad won't last very long unless the O-line is shored up. Also, I'm concerned about our running game since our run-blocking even with help will still be somewhat mediocre. Money could be the issue, though. With the Hutchinson and Steinbach contracts, talented guards like Faneca will not only require a draft pick but also big money if you want to extend their stay. Picking up lesser guards like Vincent or Smiley would cost us less, overall. I think Smiley's still fairly young, so if he works out, that would huge for now and the future.
Bender will be fine. He got beat twice by a speed move, but he has the physicality to learn to play it. He was good in run blocking and got better as the game went on. I thought the bigger problem was Brick. He just did not play well and gets no real push on run blocking. I think we stay the course with LG.
To make a comments like that is just not right. LG is one of the hardest positions to learn coming out of college. Give him some time, I have no doubt D-Brick is going to be a great LT. It took all the great LTs a few years before they became dominant players. No one comes out of college and dominates at LT. No one. D-Brick improved as last season went on, and although he has been down right awful in preseason, there is no way you can say he was a waste of the 4th overall pick.
the FO screwed up the draft. We should have drafted MANGOLD 4th, then DBrick. That way no one could say we messed up the 4th overall pick. So any-hoo, if we did not draft DBrick, who would be playing LT right now?
I agree it's too early to get too down on brick BUT he did not get better as the season progrssed alst year he actually got worse- significantly worse and he has picked up where he left off so far this preseason. Again, it's still early in his career but I am concerned about him.
The Jets have made the playoffs every yead DBrick has been our left tackle. When DBrick is in we win almost 63% of our regular season games. Some people just need to whine about something or have a scapegoat.
Oh yeah, he was the real difference maker last year, LOL. Hint to Tanny, the man with the OG plan (not): The Ravens need a WR.
I was never overly impressed with him in all the ACC games i watched. Couldnt believe he was getting all those accolades. Overrated.
Yes . The front office did screw up. Im not sure it was on D Brick but they spent too much time and resources scouting all these D tackles rather then shoring up the o-line. As things tranpired during the off season a lot of people questioned the lack of o-line attention and it seems they are just trying to find out now what and who will be on the starting o-line. a little late to have to get a unit together to open up hole for our newly coveted running back. I prey T Jones doesnt turn into Kevin Barlow trying to find holes that arent there!
That WAS Benders first action at LG against NFL starters. For a guy coming from a triple option offense with no passing game to speak of he has a lot to learn. He has the physical skills, the question is how quickly can he learn to pass protect? We will find out soon enough.
some players just never adapt to the nfl level. d'brick is showing and was last year, that he's not elite. maybe someday he may be good/serviceable, but it doesn't look like he was #4 material. as for bender a sixth rd choice, who knows if he's ever gonna make the transition to the nfl level, pass protection wise!!! the real problem is the jets have no depth to allow guys like d'brick and bender to sit on the bench a couple of years and learn to make the transition to the nfl level. when you think about it, we're lucky mangold was able to in his first season. tangini has a difficult job on their hands and last years over acheivement may not have been the best thing to have happened from the fans perspective, b/c now the fans are expecting too much!!!! the offensive and defensive lines need to be completely rebuilt and two drafts is not enough time to get the job done. you also have to look at the fact tangini is a very young staff and they will make some mistakes drafting. not all their draft choices are going to pan out. it may end up being that d'brick never becomes what some fans here are expecting (elite left tackle) he may end up being a bust(showing some signs of it now) or just ordinary. either way, it's going to take a lot more time than some fans here think. too many people are over evaluating the talent on this team and can not take off the green glasses and take an honest look at what this team is. IT IS A TEAM REBUILDING. and two drafts is not enough. especially when they played it cheap and choose not to use the free agent market, which i happen to think was their major mistake of this off season!!!!!
I saw him play once. I happened to turn on the Senior Bowl about 1 minute before he gave up an ugly sack on an inside move. I'm not over impressed but he has been a big upgrade over Jones.
