Peter King in his Monday Monning QB said today: "Jets backup quarterback Kellen Clemens, who's playing like he's going to challenge for the starting job by Halloween -- and I'm serious about that." Yes there is or will be a Quarterback Controversy on the Jets. My take: I love Pennington, and his brain and leadership - but his arm is always going to be an issue. In order to get to the next level - SUPER BOWL - the NY Jets need to be able to spread the field and go deep. Kellen Clemens can do that - and if he matures quickly - he will (as King says) take over and become the Jets' starter. Loyalty is great, but the Super Bowl is the ultimate goal...
Well, Green Guy, Chad's brain is alot of what has been the problem this preseason. He just looks bad. This arm strength has been what it always is, but Chad does not look focused, and does not look like he is in the game. I want to know what is causing him to look this bad, because he can't even do the things he has always done well. If Chad continues to play this way, it would be safe to say that his job was not lost due to arm strength.
The thing I noticed was after the first TD, not only were the guys on the filed fired up, but saw several defensive teammates come over to excitedly celebrate with Kellen. Do I think he should start soon? Not as long as Penny produces. That said, I think he would have few problems taking over if something does happen and seems to have the team behind him.
WELL NO SHIT SHERLOCK! All of these points should be obvious TO EVERYONE. Lets get this over with here and now. EVERYONE WHO IS A JET FAN, SANE OR NO, should know that if Penny doesnt perform he will be replaced by Clemens. REMEMBER the key word is IF. Cause we all can agree that even if Penny is throwin ducks, yet he throws for 300 yards, a few TDs, and a WIN, he will remain the starter PERIOD!
Peter King has loved Clemens since before he was drafted. He picked Clemens as his sleeper pick for the '06 draft.
It won't take 300 yards to keep him in if he wins. He could be throwing for 200 and a TD and he'll stay in if the Jets win. Conversely if he's playing well but the Jets are getting slammed early on he'll probably get moved out for Clemens at some point as the brass plans for the future.
These keyboard jockeys are just looking for a way to boost some ratings and "excitement". It gives them something to write about. There is no QB controversy until at least game 3 of the season. Pennington would have to get blown out in those first 3 games before he got yanked. He's going to survive having a bad game or two along the way. The rest of this is just fiction and or wishful thinking on behalf of people that want to see the guy go.
He named Chad as the starter going into camp. He hasn't said anything about game 1 yet, which would lead me to believe that Chad will be the starter of that game. Of course if he was going to start Clemens against the Pats he would not make the declaration until as soon before game time as was allowed by the rules. He'd want to see the deep bags under Belichiks eyes from staying up all night watching film and scribbling the night before the game to prep the Pats for Clemens instead of Chad.
Mangini was asked after Chad's INTs in the Minnesota game if he regretted naming Chad the starter before camp and he replied "no, I'm comfortable with him". Since then Chad played a better game and doesn't figure to play much if at all in the last one, so I don't see how that will change unless he gets hurt.
Depends on how you factor Chad's mobility and fragility into the equation. The Jets need to do things differently when he's back there than when any other QB is back there due to his extreme fragility. An example would be the use of Chris Baker and Anthony Becht as pass blockers for Chad leading to their inefficient production as pass catchers. An example would be the use of a blocking back to protect Chad leading to the inability to exploit a FB like Jerald Sowells or Richie Anderson who are pass catchers first and relatively poor blockers. An example would be the inability to use a true zone-blocking scheme because every now and then somebody gets a free run at the QB and that can never happen with Chad at the helm. The Jets offensive line is undersized and would benefit from the ability to use a true zone-blocking scheme, however they can't due to the catastrophic possibilities involved. Note that I'm not saying the Jets don't zone block some, but with that personnel that's all they should be doing and that's not the case. Also note that zone-blocking is a much weaker alternative than most other schemes and I would never advocate using it if you have the personnel to avoid it. The Broncos get away with it because they have no choice, as playing at Mile High stadium forces them to use a smaller personnel set than you'd like to have. They also benefit from opposing defensive linemen needing oxygen after a few series.
The fact that this is still being played as an arm issue is ridiculous, seeing as the one thing Pennington did manage to do on Saturday was a 79 yard touchdown pass to the far sideline which probably traveled a good 30 yards in the air. Clemens has looked good so far playing against second stringers, and thats generally encouraging. But as of right now, Pennington isn't the problem, so replacing him would be pointless.
A 30 yard floater with no coverage in site indicates an NFL quality arm? It was a perfect pass but it wasn't an indication of an NFL arm since it's a pass that 45 year old guys with guts hanging on them throw in parks every weekend.
They don't game plan in preseason. Once they start gameplanning Penny will look much better. Penny is not the problem, worry about the o-line and d-line.
YOu guys are crazy. Clemens is the future. Penny has looked like crap but he is still the starter. Secondly its rediculous to kill Clemens who has looked Great even though its preseason. IT makes no sense to kill him.
