At the game, the second the PLaxico play happened I yelled "Face Mask". When I got home, I watched it and you can see the side judge has the perfect angle. Now take a look at the picture on the first page of this site. So, why can't a defensive player even touch the face mask a little but an offensive player can? This has been getting worse and worse the last few years with the amount of plays where the receiver or RB does the stiff arm. The rule should be changed, or if no rule is written they should start calling it. Plaxico is one guy that does this all the time. He even pulled the DBs head down a little.
Giants WR Plaxico Burress on the play of the day, his vicious stiff-arm to the grill of Andre Dyson that freed him for a touchdown: "I used to practice that back in the day when I saw Eric Dickerson do it. I just stick it out there. If I can get my palm on their helmet, they won't be able to get their hands on me. I was expecting to get out, keep the chains rolling. But that's why you keep playing. You never know what happens." Well, the practice paid off ... send Eric Dickerson a check. Dyson had Plax dead-to-rights, lined up, in a position to make the tackle, just inches between Burress and Dyson on one side, and just inches between Burress and the sideline on the other. Burress hit Dyson with a stiff-arm to the face, knocked him on his little heiney, and then outran everyone else to the endzone, giving the Giants the go-ahead score. http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/10/08/the-debriefing-the-seven-deadly-sins-of-sunday-week-5/
that was clean, you are allowed to stiff arm the defender. we are the ones that benefited from a phantom facemask on our drive before the half that gave us the go ahead TD. the Giants player never came close to grabbing the facemask, and we got 15 yards for it. if you aren't complaining about bad calls for us, you can't about bad calls against of -- which this isn't even one.
I'll agree and disagree. I didn't know there was a phantom call we got because I was there and you miss those things, so it evened out. However, as far as the actual play, as far as I know there is no rule differentiating an offensive or defensive player grabbing the facemask, and he clearly grabbed it and even yanked it. Sure, stiff-arming is legal but if the hand at the end of that arm grabs the facemask then by rule laundry should fly.
not forgotten. I was posting about it during and after the game. it was the pick where he got picked off at the 2 and the giant's momentum carried him into the end zone. there was a clear cheap shot after Chad released the ball. We should've had it 1st and 10 at the Giants 11 after a half the distance to the goal line penalty. instead, they had the ball and scored a TD. So let's go over this: If called properly, we're up 24-21 with the ball at the 11 and a good chance to score a TD. Since it was called improperly, Giants score a TD and we're down 28-24.
