Young will have a terrible completion percentage at the start of his career. He just doesn't throw the ball well enough.
Again, view these clips and tell me again how he can't throw on time or read defenses. You are just repeating nonsense that gets passed around by people who typecast him as a running QB: http://www.jcdenton41.com/VinceYoung-2005.html Matt Leinart did not throw against a single defense ranked in the Top 30 all season long until the Rose Bowl. Vince beat Ohio State in the Shoe (throwing for 270) and played against several other highly-ranked defenses. What is it that tells you Leinart or Cutler are better than Young at reading defenses? Because they're white? None of these QB's have ever taken a pro snap, and Vince played against (and defeated) as good competition as anyone. How many college QBs do you know whose list of teams he defeated includes the likes of Michigan, Ohio State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and USC? That's 5 of the top 7 programs of all time taken down in one 3-year career.
why the F are you bringing race into this, that has nothing to do with anything fact is he sits on his routes a lot, the window in the pro's is much smaller and it's all timing, his offense was incredibly basic and dummied down, its nothing against him, he seems like a good person and i hope he does well, its just the truth college isn't the pro's, the quicker you get that through your head the easier it will be for you, he's going to need a few years and some work, he'd have (not financial wise or draft status wise) been better served to stay at Texas and work on his game one more year before jumping ship, but the timing was just to perfect, and I can't nor won't fault him for that
to add in what i didnt post, i never even mentioned any other QB's, because I dont want any QB this year since our position is unknown, and two all you keep trying to back yourself up with is highlights.......HIGHLIGHTS
Because there is no other rational explanation as to why Vince gets downgraded as a passer after finishing with a better pass efficiency rating against better competition than either Leinart or Cutler. There is a double standard at work here. People say Vince doesn't "look" like a passer because he is athletic and black. That is typecasting. How else can you ignore the facts? Again, look at the clips and tell me again that he cannot throw timing routes and into tight coverage. If he cannot do all those things, how did he finish ahead of Leinart in pass efficency? And Leinart had the advantage of weaker defensive competition and the best supporting cast in arguably the history of college football. There is no logical explanation for the knocks on Vince except for typecasting and, yes, sorry, race must play into it. Why is it we never heard of the Wunderlick Test before this spring? Because people are looking to play that card against Vince. It is the old tried-and-true card to play against blacks succeeding at quarterback. You may try to dodge this, but it is the truth. You still cannot explain to me how a guy that did as well as Vince did on the field, both statistically and in wins, can possibly be typecast the way Vince has been. It is ridiculous. The tape does not lie. The stats do not lie. The victories do not lie. There is a definite double standard at work here.
I'm not going to enter a race discussion but you can't argue with the fact that Young is compared to Michael Vick unfairly. Young has an awkward throwing motion, but how many batted passes and interceptions did it lead to in college? I'll right, I lied. I am going to enter the race discussion. Vince Young, Dononvan McNabb and Steve McNair are "scrambling" QBs. Drew Brees and Jay Cutler are "mobile." Why is it that people always assume that the scramblers won't be able to become anything more than glorified runningbacks, while the others are potential stars?
Vince finished 2005 with 3000 passing yards and 1000 rushing yards. But you would rather lose with someone else at QB because Vince doesn't fit the type? That makes a lot of sense. Tell me again how you don't like Vince's passing motion when he walks out of Giants Stadium victorious and in another team's uniform. Incidentally, here is a less-biased account of Vince's pro-day: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/football/nfl/03/22/bc.fbn.draft.vinceyoung.ap/index.html
Rich Gannon had a non-conventional throwing motion & led the league in passing a couple years back. I don't think VY's mechanics will hurt him in the NFL. VY pwnt teams last year & I would be glad to have him on the NYJ though I don't really care who we draft at #4 as long as he becomes a superstar franchise player.
1)Who are you talking to? 2)Trust me, it has nothing to do with race. Maybe some people don't like him or want him to succeed because of that, but the consensus SCOUT opinion has nothing to do with that. You really haven't had much of a valid arguement. Yes some highlights are nice, but they are highlights. Pass-efficiency on that team with the system they ran is silly (hell the college QB rating system is even dumber than the pro's which is a bit ridiculous). Whoever said the throwing motion won't kill him is right to an extent. All it really does for the most part is just negate the fact he's very tall and has a solid height advantage. If he threw it normally he shouldn't have many batted passes, however with that he will see more than HE should, but not an insane amount above average (he'll probably fit right in line with whatever the average is). He's a great leader, he has talent in him, he needs work. We are rebuilding yes, but I don't want a QB this year. Again like it's been said, to hazy right now with that position. With the potential for another top class next year, it doesn't make a lot of sense to draft one now. Especially since we probably won't be great next year and will have a shot at being able to trade up or sit where we are and nab someone. (and take into account a BB guy running a similar system in ND, with a good QB, I'm sure Mangini if it turns out Penny is done and Ramsey isn't an answer at all, which is likely, would love to get Quinn after having him coached by Weiss). and b'horn, you are clearly heavily biased, and to an extent fighting with nobody (maybe yoursefl?)
Everybody is biased. I don't ever here people comparing Young to Staubach a QB with incredible leadership skills and dominating will, I always here people compare him to Michael Vick. I'm biased against Leinart because I see another touch passer who I think will have a lot of trouble against the really good defensive teams.
If the Jets get Vince Young at #4 then the Jets fans will be very very happy for a long time to come. This kid is for real. The combination of arm, speed, desire to win, and most importantly, field awareness, makes this kid a highly potential all pro. I really hope we get him.
Some nice discussion points here for and against VY. I have my opinions but am going to leave it to the guys who get paid doing it. I've come to the conclusion that I want one of the franchise QBs this year. We need it, and are in the position to do it, you cannot guarantee we will be in this position again in the near future. Whomever the FO deems is the best, they need to make it happen. JMHO....
AGREED 100%. I still don't get this Wonderlic score either... I have heard VY interviewed numerous times, and he's always been well-spoken... Many other QBs with higher scores sound like they can't put two words together...
I have to agree with you 100%. I'm not saying that anyone's being RACIST per se, but just that people automatically seem to typecast VY, ESPECIALLY in comparisons to MICHAEL VICK, whom he is not REMOTELY similar to. Vick is not a QB, plain and simple - he's a slight framed running back with incredible speed playing at the QB position. If race wasn't being taken into acct at all, then why do so many people on here compare VY to Vick? There are much better comparrisons...
Brady Quinn is the one QB that I'd rather have then Vince at this point... the trouble is... will we really be THAT BAD that we'll have a chance to pick him up next year without mortgaging away the future? :hackett:
Did anyone else hear Kiper this morning? He is very high on Young and does not give the wonderlick an ounce of credibility. He did however downplay Cutler. Saying that teams over hype players leading up to the draft trying to get other teams to take the bait and leave them the player they want and that Cutler was not in the same class as ML or VY.
I don't know where you've been but you always hear about the wonderlick tests escpecially when a top draft choice does that BAD...It has nothing to do with race...The main problem with Young at the NFL level is his throwing motion..some of those passes he made in college will never get make it pass a DL in the NFL.
  "Wunderlick" is a porno film, Wonderlic is the test given to prospective NFL draftees...
