I haven't really seen this mentioned at length, but what are the implications that such an agressive FA period where plenty of people were paid a lot of money has on our best player - Kerry Rhodes? I've seen people list resigning him as priority #1 and I tend to agree, because I think few would doubt that he has been our best player the last two years. However what does giving jenkins, pace, and faneca tons of money do to his current situation? How does having his best friend on the jets (Vilma) leave affect his desire to stay? I would say that Rhodes will likely expect a hefty contract regardless of everything else, but I would expect the number to be larger than normal given the contracts given out to the list of FAs that we signed. I'm sure he understood how much more players get on the open market but this is to another level. I also hope he isn't put off by giving all this money to these players, when he was expecting to rework his contract before FA every hit. As for Vilma, I don't think having a close friend on a team would keep him here if he wanted to leave or would make him leave if he wanted to stay, but every bit of incentive helps. I hope since the people around him now are so different than those that were here when he started he isn't put off by the new environment and wants to leave. I think the moral of the story is that this man needs to be payed and now. We will likely not be able to afford him on the open market with the kind of money he'll command, especially after next season where he will likely only improve given the better supporting cast. I hope a deal is worked out before the season so his place with the team is secure and he is happy. I am glad we got Pace, but we paid a lot for him. I sincerely hope the FO is able to meet 25's demands, because he has proven way more and done more for the jets than Pace, and likely isn't asking for more than he recieved.
What are the top safeties getting at the moment? There's no doubt Rhodes will be looking for a deal at or near the top of the pile as far as safeties are concerned. I think that will be the yardstick, rather than deals players at other positions signed with the Jets. I also hope the Jets tie him up in a long-term deal.
Arguably the best two safeties in the game are Ed Reed and Bob Sanders. Bob Sanders' contract was 5 years 37.5 million and Ed Reed's was 6 years 40 million. Ed Reed was signed in the summer of 2006 and Bob Sanders was given his extension in December. Add this to the fact that Gibril Wilson, who is not nearly as good as Sanders, Reed, or Rhodes was just given a 6 year 39 million dollar contract. Also, with the Jets signing Calvin Pace for what they did Rhodes will probably want something along the lines of 6 years 45 million, which is fair considering market value, he has been the Jets best defensive player for 2 years now and Calvin Pace got 42 million and has never played a down for the team. Judging by the how this front office gives extentions, with Bryan Thomas and Jericho Cotchery both coming some time early in the in the last year of their contracts, I would not worry about this until at least the start of the regular season. The point is Kerry Rhodes will be asking for a lot of money, but he more than deserves it and Tannenbaum should definitely give it to him.
nice choice of avatar....i have the same "the kiss" poster hanging in my man room! tough to beat that pic!!!!
and speaking of avatar's what's in that cup? i'm sure u must get asked this all the time but i gotta know. also i'd like to point out that we could always franchise rhodes, i know that leads to bad blood but if we have to the option is there.
I have asked him the avatar question at least 2 times in the past and got no answer. Guessing: 1. A couple of shelled steamer clams in butter 2. False teeth soaking in some kind of yellow liquid
I threw up in my mouth at Bob Sanders being called a top 2 safety in this thread. Kerry'll get paid, I'm not worried about this.
Tanny is on record stating that we are in good shape cap wise for this year and in the future. He's one guy I'd trust on that issue. As for Rhodes...he still has 2 year's left on his deal..they are early in their negotiations...a deal will get done im sure.
Relax, this is gonna take some more time. I expect this deal not beeing done within the next 12 months. Rhodes doesn?t want to sign now, i think he hopes to get to the Probowl with the increased D and have one more arguement why we should pay him big $$$. I also expect him to be franchsied next year and then a contract will be worked out in summer 2009.
This is just a guess but I think Rhodes will be looking for upwards of 30 million guaranteed money now. That's a direct result of the Pace signing. The Jets can counter that that's too much to play a safety but Rhodes will probably claim that he can get that much on the open market and he may well be right. I'm guessing we have a franchise tag standoff for at least one season.
Rhodes is truly the only safety in the league who is close to elite as a coverage guy as well as a physical/tackling presence. We'd be absolutely FOOLISH not to lock him up for the rest of his career.
Kerry Rhodes will look to the market for safeties in the FA this year. You might take a look at what Gibril Wilson got from the Raiders to get an idea of what his deal will be.
Sanders doesn't cover anybody and he gets hurt a lot. A lot of money for a safety. See, good safeties are fine, but I do not think they should be paid like corners. They are creeping up, salary wise. A lot of them are just players who aren't good enough to be corners. Guys like that should be available around the league. So if money is tight, I say no. If not, then pay the guy.
I wondered that for a long time too. He's said in other threads it's #1. Weird choice for an avatar, if you ask me....
