I wasnt directing my post at you, even though you kind of agreed with him. I understand what you were saying as a generalization. I have been online a lot here lately, but I dont read all the threads- not even close. I am sure there are many bizarre posts, and I try to develop a sense of where they are and avoid them. If I knew that reading FA boards prior to FA was important, and memorizing who was #1 at a particular position was a requirement to posting here...well, I just dont know if I'd ever get any work done. Bottom line- i have seen Pace play hardly at all, for the reasons I mentioned about a lack of TV exposure of the teams he's played for. I would prefer to base my opinion on seeing him play, and not what some FA board ranks him at. But you know, i'm just not up on things with football outside of NY at all. :rofl2:
Can I ask, do you really think Chad has to fight the whole world? I hope not. Anyway, Calvin Pace was interviewed today in a conference call and there's a good article summarizing what he had to say on the NYJ website. I recommend it. But one thing that caught my eye was his remark that the 3-4 was just instituted for the Cards this past year and it made a real difference in his opportunities to play well. He explains what he means well, so take a gander at it for a response as to why the NYJ CS was taken with him. By the way, the price we had to pay was the market price and this is probably because of Bill Parcell's ardent interest. The Cards were priced out of the competition for Pace, although they really wanted to keep him they've said. The Fitzgerald hit on their cap is killing their ability to sign their free agents. But they haven't been able to negotiate it away. This guy Pace apparently was a pass rusher par excellence in college -- he had like 39 sacks in college. The previous four years in the 4-3 he had about 7 sacks, but this first year in the 3-4 he had 6.5 sacks. So apparently, he and the 3-4 are a good match. Just how he will be asked to play in the 3-4 / 4-3 hybrid that Mangini is building is not clear yet. Guess we have to see him in some real games (the pre-season won't count because they'll be feeding us all vanilla pudding) before we know the real strategy of the CS for Pace. He's young, was highly sought after -- he said the other offers he received were about the same money -- but he really liked the Jets and where they seem to be going. By the way, everybody is talking about the contract's total value (that's really hype, not money). For the record, you need to go to Cimini who has the right nos. The guaranteed money is about $22 million, but the cap hit this year is about $4 million plus-- This is what's important about the money, they've spread it out over a bunch of annual caps (6 years I think). Whether he actually makes the "full value" of the contract is a crap shoot -- for both the NYJ and Mr. Pace himself, in my opinion.
Yeah, I know. I just wanted to respond to what you wrote because it was good and also because I was in agreement with the guy whose post you quoted. What I wrote earlier was that often times it doesn't matter what a poster writes. Other posters aren't going to change their minds. To help the thread starter- I actually watched 11, 12, maybe 13 Cardinals games in 2007. Why did I do that? Historically, the Jets, Saints, Cardinals, and Broncos have been the teams I followed. (Obviously, there is a big gap between the Jets and my #2 team- the Saints. After all, you can't really have two favorite teams.) Anyway... Q is my favorite player. I have Sunday Ticket. I was excited about Ken Whisenhunt taking over as head coach in 2007. I figured the Cardinals would be interesting to watch. If a Cardinals game did not conflict with a Jets game, I watched the Cardinals game. When the teams played at the same time, I flipped back and forth. Pace played outside linebacker in Arizona's 3-4 scheme last season. He played on the strongside. He was more effective as a stand-up player than he was when he had a hand on the ground. He was very versatile in 2007. He would drop back in coverage, he was excellent against the run, and he was pretty good as a pass rusher. I have seen the guy get interviewed and I read some quotes from him last season. There is no question about it. Pace is smarter than the average NFL player. His best game may have been the Week 7 game in Washington. The Cardinals lost that game 21-19. It's possible that that game was re-aired by NFL Network because it was pretty good. If that is the case, that game will be re-aired once again in the coming months. In that game, Pace recorded a sack, an interception, and 10 tackles if memory serves. There were a couple tackles that were really good. He tracked down a Redskins running back from the other side of the field. He had another big tackle on a 3rd down play. Pace was very good in pursuit last year. Many players don't do that. Does Bryan Thomas track down RBs all over the field? No. Pace does it, though. At least he did it last year. That is the question about him, obviously. Is he going to be motivated after the Jets just gave him a ton of money? I don't have a question about his ability. The guy proved he can play. I never posted it here at TGG, but I did come up with my own midseason All-Pro team (all I did was e-mail it to friends). Pace was noted as an honorable mention. All I did was make a 1st team and listed about 10 more players as honorable mentions. That sort of indicates how impressed I was with Pace's play last season. That was through only 8 games. Pace's play did not drop off in the second half.
Well he's going to be disappointed.... That was the Herm, "We love everyone" regime.... The Mangini regime is one that tells players their production is down so they don't deserve a promised extension, after they sacrifice their body for the team.... I'm not saying I agree or disagree with either of these philosophies, but if Jaimie Henderson was a factor in Pace's decision, he should have signed with KC
thank you, that is a very fair assessment, I can usually filter out the ridiculous post from the knowledgable ones, that last one was well said. I think I can paint a picture of what calvin pace can bring the jets based on various opinions. Seems as if hes a lower grade Adalius Thomas, big play capability, ability to play multiple positions, but not as big or athletic. Seems like this Guy could go boom or could go Bryan, hopefully the former. Cakes you also gave an excellent explantion. Not trying to start a war here, this aquisition just puzzled me. Hopefully it works out, I like what Ive read outside the forum. I assume Pace, Barton/Hobson, Harris, Thomas?
Good stuff, Cakes. Thanks for the insights. I guess you now have another reason to follow the Saints on your Sunday Ticket (Vilma). If Pace is able to zero in on the ballcarrier and not get lost in the shuffle, that is a big positive. Harris has shown he has great closing speed and a nose for the ball. They could be very complimentary of each other. Also, while i cant sit here and say which side BT and Pace will be on (who knows with this CS- they like to move guys around) they could end up being two solid bookends of the 3-4 if they are put in spots at which they can excel. Bowens came on some last year, maybe Barton still has a good season left in him...they will probably have to add another LB if Hobson goes.
I agree. However, if he is gone, I hope we can trade back and get a CB and WR. Rodgers-Cromartie is a madman
