What about us? By Pat Yasinskas ESPN.com What about us? After the New York Jets splurged on a bunch of new players (Alan Faneca, Damien Woody, Kris Jenkins and Calvin Pace), some of the old ones started grumbling. Heading into a crucial year for coach Eric Mangini, the Jets need harmony, not a bunch of veterans wondering aloud about contract extensions. There's talk that the Jets are working on a new deal for WR Laveranues Coles, but he was a no-show for the start of offseason workouts. Coles, a team captain, is one of the more respected voices in the locker room. The Jets need to keep him happy. But they need to do more than that to prevent a potential mutiny. Tight end Chris Baker has expressed unhappiness with his current contract and Kerry Rhodes might be the most underpaid safety in the league. If the tension isn't erased, the grumbling will get louder. I know we've beaten the Coles contract situation over and over again. But do you really think it would create a mutiny and eventually split the locker room into two sides? Or would players see it for what it is and side with the Front Office on this one?
in one word, no. Didnt baker just get a contract. Also Rhodes will get his money, but we still have the tag up our sleeves.
Oh and here's a link to the complete story. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=yasinskas_pat&id=3304812
Just pay the players based on how they perform at the end of the year. This way, you get payed based on how well you play. Of course, you don't hear much about paying less for all those players that got a big contract and didn't live up to it. We can mention Bryan Thomas, DRob, Ellis, Pennington, Kenyon Coleman. I think I might give up being a fan all together. Too much BS to listen to and put up with.
"BORING I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY NATIONAL MEDIA ON JETS" article. EWWW, some players want more money. The sky is falling
What do they expect to happen? Do they think Rhodes and others will tank it b/c the Jets paid some FAs? At worst it should motivate them to play better to get a bigger deal elsewhere b/c if they don't play well it could hurt their ability to get the contract they want.
When the team doesn't go 4-12, people get paid more money. Its that simple. Why did Bryan Thomas get a raise? Due to performance and going 10-6. You can't go 4-12 and say "Hey I played well, give me more money." If a GM i'll say, "No, you won 25% of your games this year. You didn't play well. Go sit down"
I swear that I saw the EXACT, word for word, article about a month ago, at which point it was addressed that Baker didn't complain. Baker's exact words were that "I want to finish my career as a Jet". That's the quote that means that he's complaining? Sounds like jackasses who don't have anything better to write.
I basically agree, except that in Rhodes' case he's going nowhere, so he only "has" to play well enough to get the franchise tag. In any event, there is no sports team in any sport that doesn't have veteran players making less than players that are new to the team, and yet somehow they still manage to play the games. This is IMO a complete nonstory.
I second that thought. Thats exactly what the 4-12 Jets deserve. It doesnt matter how close the games were, loss means loss
Yeah, exactly right. If they were a winning team and this was happening they might have a legitimate gripe but they aren't. Everybody will become happy (except Coles of course) if the team starts winning. At that time they can start bitching about more money.
Everyone knows the NFL is all about what you have done lately and these guys were were 4-12 last year not 12 and 4 that's why the money's not going to the "guys in the locker room" they weren't money players.
Coles is unhappy! Didn't the Redskins give him a TON of money 4 or 5 years ago and when he came back to the Jets didn't he get more money and they reworked his contract. How many paydays does one player get in his NFL life?
Money curropts and the NFL has devised a system that rewards teams for being mediocre. The league and players will get the crop it planted. The NFL is a few years ahead of the NBA and NHL.
