Jets add ex-Seahawk CB Dyson

When the Jets released Pro Bowl cornerback Ty Law last month in a salary-cap move, they figured to be in the market for a veteran replacement. They found that guy last night, agreeing to terms with former Seahawk Andre Dyson, according to a source close to Dyson.

Dyson, 26 will sign a five-year, $11.5million contract, which includes $3 million in guarantees, the source said. Dyson, who spent one season in Seattle after four years with the Titans, was regarded as one of the better cornerbacks on the market. The Jets almost signed Dyson last spring, but they were outbid by the Seahawks.

In Seattle, Dyson appeared in only 10games, missing six with various injuries. Going into 2005, he had missed only two games. He was back in the starting lineup for all three postseason games, including the Super Bowl. Despite his uneven year, his release came as a surprise.

His signature performance came in a 42-0 rout of the Eagles, when he scored on an interception return (72 yards) and a fumble recovery (25). It was his only interception of the season. In five years, he has 17 interceptions.

Dyson's two former teams also wanted to re-sign him, but he hit it off with rookie coach Eric Mangini and his staff during his visit a couple of weeks ago. Presumably, he will replace Law at left corner. David Barrett and Justin Miller will compete on the right side, although it's possible Mangini will simply start the best two.

PRESEASON FOES: The Jets announced their 2006 preseason opponents: at Tampa Bay, at Washington, the Giants and Philadelphia. The dates and times will be announced at a later date.

The Jets filled one of the holes in their defense yesterday by signing Seattle Seahawks cornerback Andre Dyson to a five-year, $11.5 million contract that includes $3 million in signing and roster bonuses.

Dyson, 26, is expected to replace Pro Bowler Ty Law in the starting lineup.

Last season, Dyson, a former starter with the Titans, battled health concerns. He started the first three games but was forced out of the lineup because of hamstring and ankle injuries and ultimately lost his starting job to Kelly Herndon. Dyson finished with one interception and 20 tackles in 10 games, five starts.

At 5-10, 183 pounds, Dyson is considered a cover corner. In his five-year career, he has 17 interceptions and 69 passes defensed.

Dyson will likely start opposite veteran David Barrett, but second-year pro Justin Miller came on strong at the end of the season and may challenge for a starting job.

The Jets announced their preseason schedule yesterday. They open with games at Tampa Bay and Washington and close with home dates against the Giants and Eagles.

March 30, 2006 -- The Jets will make two road trips on their preseason schedule to go along with their annual games against the Giants and Eagles.

Dates and times of the games have not yet been determined. The Jets' first preseason game will be in Tampa against the Buccaneers. The Jets then play the Redskins at FedEx Field.

The next game will be against the Giants at Giants Stadium. The finale will be against the Eagles at Giants Stadium.

"We are facing some very good football teams in the preseason," Jets' GM Mike Tannenbaum said. "The Buccaneers, Redskins and Giants all were playoff teams last season, and the Eagles obviously have been a perennial playoff-caliber team under Andy Reid."

All of the games will be shown in the tri-state area on WCBS-2 and will be aired on the Jets' Radio Network, with WEPN 1050-AM.

The Jets may lose out on another free-agent tackle, this one former Titans' veteran Brad Hopkins, who visited with them a few weeks ago and alslo has drawn interest from Tampa Bay.

In a radio interview yesterday, Hopkins hinted strongly at retirement.

"I'm kind of leaning more towards retirement," Hopkins said. "I live here in Nashville and I've never done the free agency thing, going from city to city. It was interesting and fun going to see some other teams and see how they ran things, but ultimately it's about my family, my kids.

"I've got young guys and I don't really think they'd understand me not being around all the time. They're a little bit more important to me than making another check."

Hopkins said he planned to wait another week or two before making a final decision.

If we dont get a tackle then the 4th pick will be ferguson obviously, but i hope we find a replacement, because passing up a guy like mario williams will bite us right in the ass.

There are other tackles in the draft then ferguson. They could move down, hoard some picks and take a tackle later in the round.

If williams is siting there at 4 I think they take him and address the tackle position with the 29th pick. th tackle position is pretty deep this year so they may wait til later to fill the need.

Personally I'mnot a big fan of taking a tackle t 4 - I'd rather trade down and hoard picks (I think NO takes Mario if they stay where they are)
