Did you really think we would draft a lb that high in the 3rd round who sucked? (schlegel). Baker was able to get separation, and he did get yards after the catch plenty of times. Not every time, b/c no one does, but sometimes. Reason A doesnt make any sense b/c if you have a bad o line that should make the te even more involved in the passing game, and take away the receivers down the field.
I didn't like the Keller pick because every receiver was on the board, but I'm starting to think it won't be so bad. Comparisons to Dallas Clark are hard to ignore. We just have to get the damn QB to get him the ball. Have baker at the TE, Coles and Cotch on the outside, Keller in the slot and Neon in the backfield. NASTY!!! oh, and CLEMENS at QB
But which one, between Baker and Franks, has WR-like speed? The lack of passes going to the TE is more a by-product of having a terrible OL. LAJet has some very valid points. Baker hasn't really shown the separation skills that would enable him to have more of an impact in the offense. This is not and indictement of him. He ceratinly has enough of the other TE skill set that makes him effective in other areas. But think of it this way, having an effective H-Back in Keller would either occupy a safety or a linebacker (I think nickelbacks will be too badly abused by him) and take them out of the box AND/OR it gives either Thomas or Washington an extra blocker at the point-of-attack. In either cas it would open up the running game.
ya, they will use Keller, bleieve me, schott wants a recieving 1st TE, he did this alot in SD..its part of schotts MO, this really speaks of how little he respected lasgt years Jet TEs on getting separation or creating moismatches. what u want is for def to have to decide whether to put LB or CB on TE. If they go CB they take away another zone guy, if they go LB we have a mismatch due to Keller speed. def never had to worry with Baker,
i really see keller lining up in the slot on 3 wr sets. he will be a serious issue in the red zone as HE DOESNT BLOCK WELL AT ALL. you are either going to give a guy a free run at the rb or they will know we are going to throw the ball. its something he will have to prove he can do before anyone respects his blocking skills.
Not just the red zone either. Consider this formation: Code: cotch LT LG C RG RT keller coles QB richardson jones If the defense puts in a base defense (4-3 or 3-4), you have Keller against a LB who will not be able to match up. Richardson can fill in for extra pass protection. If they put in a nickel package, we can run it down their throats. This is just one package that could present major mismatch issues for defenses all the way down the field. I can think of a few others, but this example makes the point. Now we can also stick the defense if they get into the package we want whether it be base or nickel and go no huddle so they can't change personnel.
