Senators make Giant point over champs' name Friday, May 23, 2008 BY TOM HESTER JR.THE ASSOCIATED PRESS TRENTON ? The Super Bowl champion New Jersey Giants? That name can't be found in the National Football League standings. And the Giants helmets are emblazoned with a bold "NY" logo. But it was nevertheless proclaimed Thursday by New Jersey state senators honoring this year's Super Bowl champions. "Whether you're a football fan or not, I'm sure you found yourself caught up in the hype this past winter with the success of the New Jersey Giants," said Sen. Paul Sarlo, D-Wood-Ridge, "I emphasize the New Jersey Giants." Sarlo's district includes Giants Stadium, where the Giants have played since 1976 while retaining their New York moniker. And though the Giants tell the world they're from New York, Garden State senators said their come-from-behind attitude represented more of a Jersey mentality. Sarlo said they resembled "gutsy New Jerseyans" and "what we are all about here in New Jersey." The Giants beat the heavily favored New England Patriots 17-14 in February's Super Bowl, ending New England's hopes for an undefeated season. The Senate presented a ceremonial resolution to Coach Tom Coughlin, who in turn gave Sarlo and Senate President Richard J. Codey new Giants helmets. "You must be at your best when your best is needed, and certainly our football team was," Coughlin said. The Giants and the Jets, who have played in Giants Stadium since 1984, are building a new stadium near Giants Stadium that's to open in 2010. The stadium will include a new practice facility for the Giants, while the Jets are building a new headquarters in Florham Park. "You'll be totally New Jersey, just like the Jets," Codey, D-Essex, told Coughlin. The ceremony enlivened the usually reserved Senate, especially when Codey grabbed a football and unleashed a perfect pass across the Senate chamber to Sen. Nicholas Scutari, D-Union. TRENTON ? I hate this stuff. God damm politicians should worry about other things then this crap. I am from Jersey and I don't care. If they really cared about this, they should have told both teams to change the names before giving them the land and the stadium deal
Honestly. I mean, isn't there a coach in NE they should be hunting down instead of wasting their time on this???
To whose benefit is the NY name for? The JETS/Giants or the state of NY? I would imagine that with the NY name would come access to the bigger money and bigger marketing/promotions for these teams. I mean look at the NETS and Knicks. The Knicks stink yet MSG always seem to be packed.
I always used to think the Jets and Giants changed their helmets in the 80s eliminating the NY out of respect for New Jersey.
They can't change the names. It would open up the very real prospect of somebody (and New York City is full of rich somebodies) trying to bring NFL football back to NY.
Here we go..change the name of the thread to 101 Reasons Why I'll Stop Being A Jet Fan Because of the Team Name of New Jersey Jets...I've said this before in another thread already and I know that it'll never happen, but lets be honest, at least in terms of the Jets, they've now played in New Jersey for longer than they played in Queens. I'm ready for all of you non-New Jerseyians to start bashing me-
I have to admit that if they changed the name the New Jersey Jets AND if a new team landed in NYC I'd probably take the opportunity to start over with a fresh slate. My uncles were huge Giants fans and they switched to the Mets instantly in 1962.
That's right, and the next time either wins the Super Bowl they'll have a parade down Broadway in Manhattan, and there's nothing you can do about it.
List of Priorities as a Jets Fan 1. Win Super Bowl 2. Punch Bill Bellichek 3. Punch anything that resembles a Dolphin 4. Make fun of all other AFC East mistakes 5. Punch anything that resembles a Dolphin again ..... 99. Remember to fertilize lawn 100. Care about whether its NY or NJ... Lets move the team to PA!!!
Wow... I'll never take anything you say as a Jets fan seriously again... Why wait for a name change? Just bail now...
Haha, thats really weird. Paul Sarlo was the mayor of my town, when I was in high school he used to come in and act like such a hot shot. what a tool. anyway hes a loser and anything he thinks about sports should never matter.
