Look, I know its the preseason, but I counted at least 7 dropped passes, the big one obviously being by Raymond, but there were 4 drops on Clemens first 8 passes. Can anyone come up with any reason why the receivers might have been so erratic at catching the ball?
Favre may throw it really hard but his passes are generally always perfect spirals. Clemens has a tendency to throw wobbly passes. Since he throws it hard too, it might be harder to catch it. Just a guess though.
well, after catching the floaters pennington has been tossing to them for 8 years, catching a pass with velocity will take some getting used to. Raymond's drop was just nerves in my eyes. He over thought it. "I am going to make the winning catch! that will net me a spot on the roster for sure! wait, I'm over the middle am I going to get de-cleated? *turns head* Oh shit the ball!" boink right through his hands. Classic case of too much pressure put on himself, and as a result the easy throw and catch becomes a short case of butter fingers...
I think some of these drops have nothing to do with Clemens. It's just a lack of concentration by the receiver. For example there was just no excuse for Bubba Franks to flub such an easy catch.
The majority of the drops seem to come when he is at QB. I agree with you in the belief that it is a lack of concentration however you have to wonder because most of them happen with Kellen at Qb
I can kinda see your point, but am not sold on it. It sucked the Kellen had several plays that would have extended drives stopped by dropped passes. Who ever said the name Butterhands Franks this year hit the nail on the head. That was an easily catchable ball. Clowney had another bad drop that would have been a first. Who knows what the problem was but lets hope its gone by Game 1.
Did anyone other than Clowney even catch one of Clemens passes? I absolutely buy into the theory that Clemens throws an uncatchable ball. It wasn't even that all those drops happened with him at QB, but they all happened when the WR was wide open and the ball was thrown right to them. I just can't believe they all weren't concentrating. If that is the case then that is a very bad sign.
Felt bad for Ratliff when Raymond didn't catch that ball. It would've looked mighty impressive if Ratliff was able to win it for the Jets in the final two minutes. Regardless, Ratliff continues to impress. Clemens, on the other hand...
Whaa? Its Clemons fault he had some many dropped passes? These are professionals. If the ball is there and catchable - THEY BETTER DAMN SURE MAKE THE CATCH! Its what these guys do for a living and the reason we make them rich. Quit making excuses for errors. Whoever drops the ball....its their fault.
Its not that cut and dry. After having only one look at things I agree with you, but I want to get a few more lokks at the throws before I'm sure. If the are not in a very good spiral when the ball gets to the receiver it makes it a much tougher catch. The Franks throw looked great, but a few of the others may not have been. Almost done downlaoding the torrent so I can't wait to get a second/third look at things.
These wide-outs are not playing with any intensity to speak of. This is why Clowney spits up the ball when the DB arrives to kick his ass at the same time as the ball. When you watch them in practice they seem to be running 1/2 speed or slightly better on most of their routes. In the game, speed distracts them. I get the feeling that these guys are not attenuated to game mode yet, and it shows up in these pre-season games. Too bad that Kellen has gotten the brunt of this. I'm glad that Mangini left him in there long enough to complete some too.
As corny as it sounds, I think some of the recievers might have been a little nervous playing in front of their new HOF QB for the first time... I know I personally wouldnt want to go out there and drop passes w/ Favre watching every single move the offense makes as he picks up the plays... I can see the recievers possibly putting undue pressure on themselves - everyone is gonna want to make a great impression on Favre so they get the ball going forward...
My theory would be when you have a young inexperienced WR they may be having a problem seeing the ball out of Clemens hands. He is short and has a deceptively quick release. I think they may not be expecting the ball on them as quick if they aren't seeing it out of his hand because of his height. Ratliff stands very tall and is much more delibrate. I think the WR have more time to see the ball from the QB hand to their hands. The really good WR are used to catching a ball with a lot less time to see it into their hands.
My theory is... its preseason, and they better start remembering how to catch a f-ing pass that hits them in the hands whether it is thrown by clemens, farve or whoever the fk has his hands up Mangold's ass when the ball is snapped. Mangini better start cracking that whip in practice.
i think its mental...with favre in the game they were great...he comes out people start dropping passes....
They are Wr's and they are supposed to catch the ball. PERIOD. If they prove they can not then Tangin's next task is to get some that can. The time of catching CP's Lobs are over. At the end of the year don't be surprised if our Second Wr behind Cotchery is someone we least expect.
You can always count of Brad Smith to give you his best Anthony Becht impression at least once or twice a game.
