Interesting dynamic: While most NFL veterans are as excited about playing the fourth preseason game as they would be at the prospect of seeing their dentist for a root canal, Brett Favre wants in.

This is why, since the moment he suited up in a JetsNew York Jets uniform, he's been lobbying to Eric Mangini for more playing time.

This is why if Mangini told Favre the plan was to play him for the entire preseason finale against the Eagles Thursday, he'd be doing cartwheels out to the practice field.

"I just love to play," Favre was saying yesterday. "I've always wanted to play in [the final preseason game]."

Favre, who was used to playing in all four preseason games while with Green Bay, said he hasn't spoken to Mangini about what the plan is for Thursday, but he seemed to know what was going to transpire.

"I don't know what's going to happen, [but] I would assume he would probably say no," Favre said. "If that's the case, then so be it. I can get some practice in. We'll be OK. I don't know if six plays, although I would like to do it, what you get out of that."

Mangini predictably was noncommittal about his plan for Thursday, saying, "Not sure. We have these two days [of practice]. I'm going to see what it looks like over the two days and then evaluate it. I can't say definitively no or definitively yes."

Asked whether he'd listen to Favre's lobbying to play, Mangini said with a wry smile, "I always listen to the players. Sometimes you just agree to disagree."

If Favre doesn't play, it will have been two weeks without playing in a game before the Sept. 7 opener in Miami.

Asked if that is a concern, Favre said, "Well, I guess no more of a concern than coming in late and having a week to prepare for my first game like I did two weeks ago. To me, that was a real game, based on the circumstances.

"At least in this case, I will have some practice and have worked with these guys."

Asked if he expects to be "comfortable" by the season opener, Favre said, "Completely? I'd be lying if I said yes, but I felt a lot more comfortable the other night [against the GiantsNew York Giants ], although we made a lot more mistakes.

"Once you start game-planning for teams, to a certain extent you simplify things and you go to bat with things you feel comfortable with."

Unlike a lot of veteran players who'd prefer not to play any preseason games for fear of getting hurt before the real season begins, Favre seems unfazed by the concern of injury.

This even after watching Giants' DE Osi UmenyioraOsi Umenyiora hurt his left knee making a pass rush move Saturday night, an injury that ended his season before it began.

Perhaps that's why Favre has played in an NFL-record 275 consecutive games, including playoffs.

"I've never really thought about [getting hurt], and I'm not saying Osi did think about it," Favre said. "I saw the tape. That was meant to be. It's very unfortunate for him and for the Giants, but it wasn't like guys rolled up on him. That [injury] probably would have happened in practice at some point, the way it occurred.

"He just went down. Injuries are part of it. They come in a lot of different ways. I've played [in] so many games, and not that I haven't been injured, but I've overcome injuries. [I've] been lucky in a lot of situations. This is 18 years. Whatever is going to happen is going to happen. I can't control that.

"I love to play, and that's really all I can think about."

nope...after what the Giants just went through with Osi...we don't need Favre playing in anymore meaningless games......if he were to go down....it would be catastrophic beyond comprehension.

he doesn't need to play in this game.

One of my buddies is a HUGE giants fan....he's still blubbering over the loss of Umenyiora. It's sad...

plus he's on the cover of Madden.....sorry dude, don't wanna take any chances.

Exactly. Furthermore, if Favre plays then the entire starting offensive line has to play to protect him, and I highly doubt the Jets will do that.

The running backs minus Washington are the ones who need the work.

the last thing we need to worry about is Brett Favre being ready for opening day. No chance he plays.

I think he should play a series or two. Make sure the little things are shored up. Have him take a couple looks at a few different defenses then sit him down until the following Sunday.

How does Mangini lose his job over an injured QB, and the fact that he was guaranteed 09?

From a cost-benefit standpoint, I just don't see it being worth the while to expose Favre to potential injury against scrubs who would do anything to avoid being cut.

At this point there's nothing that Favre can't button-down at practice. Keep him healthy for the start of the season.

It would make more sense to give Clemens, Ratliff and Ainge the PT. I'd like to see Clemens tighten things up a bit. I want to see if Ratliff can maintain his level of consistency. As for Ainge, I'd like for him to fall down clutching his nuts after a couple of series so that at least there's some plausible excuse for the CS to place him on IR.

you really think mangini's job will be safe if we don't make the playoffs?

It was guaranteed. If they win 6 games, I can see a firing. He was guaranteed 09, reports have said Woddy speaks about EM and MT in way he never spoke about Herm or any other regime. There is confidence in these guys. If the team blows balls and wins 2-6 games with a completely healthy team, then yes Mangini goes. But 7+ he stays.

This team is made to do well, yes, but the expectations can't be unrealistic.

11 wins is the highest ceiling for this team. 7,8 the acceptable. Woddy is not firing Mangini if he doesn't make the playoffs.

He may fire him if we don't go on a winning streak after the bye week. I would. Have you seen how easy it gets? Goddamn.

A few series against Philly's scrubs aren't going to make Favre any better or anymore prepared for Week 1. There's no benefit, only a possibility for disaster. This shouldn't even be a question. Keep Favre out!

I don't want him to play at all. He looks sharp and pretty comfortable, it isn't worth risking him or the starting OL.

i'd have all of our starting veterans sit...
the only potential starter i'd let play is lowery...b/c he is a rookie
these guys are professionals....everyone should be ready at this point...
the final game is for guys trying to make the final 53...give them a full game to prove themselves
