They must have a trade or know of some cuts for a running RB

Darius Walker and Ryan Moats were cut, but they're not any good.

Of course, Ron Dayne, Shaun Alexander, and Travis Henry are out there.

Either they are not cutting Chatman or someone else is in the works. I can't see us going into the season with only 2 RB. Especially when a stated goal of the Jets this year is to have a strong running game. I don't think you can do that with just 2 guys. One injury and you've got a single RB left to play.

I guess Barrett's ability to fill in at safety (plus his pay cut) will be able to keep him on the roster.

Still puzzled as to why Chatman was cut though.

Hutchinson has "broken" stories before that turned out to be untrue. He averages one or two a year (other than that I like him a lot).

So I'm taking all this with a grain of salt until the final list comes out officially. (I do expect some surprises though, with at least 2-3 players being brought in from other teams).

    Re: Alexander

He's been really poor the past two seasons and called out his offensive line last year. He went down upon first contact regularly in 2007. He looked to the sidelines often, as well. If he signs with somebody the end of his career will resemble the end of Franco Harris' career- looking to take the easy way out by playing like a pussy and then going to some other team for a cup of coffee and more shitty play.

Yeah, never liked him either but as a lot of people have said there has to be somebody else in the works. They won't go with two backs when one of them is Jones.

This would explain why they ran Chatman into the ground last night.

I still don't understand why Musa Smith had to be cut earlier in the week. Chatman and Smith could have shared duties last night. Both backs could have been showcased if the Jets were not planning on keeping either one.

They must have their eye on a back currently on someone's roster. Alexander and Henry wouldn't seem to fit the Jets mold, because the former no longer loves football (it's evident in his play of the past two seasons) and the latter has major character flaws. Dayne would seem to be an injury replacement, like if Thomas Jones had to be put on IR during the season.

The Chargers may actually keep SIX running backs and they have the best back in the league. Meanwhile, here are the Jets (possibly) currently with only one guy backing up a 30-year old.

Perhaps Chatman is being traded and not released, this is from Cimini's blog:

Lots of speculation late Friday night about RB Jesse Chatman. One report said he was released. He was not released, according to his agent, Brett Tessler. However, that doesn’t mean Chatman will be a Jet. Turns out they were showcasing him in Thursday night’s pre-season finale, because I’m hearing he probably will be traded. Not sure about the destination or the compensation, but it could be the Ravens, where he would be reunited with his longtime offensive coordinator, Cam Cameron. The Jets will have an announcement Saturday on Chatman, who rushed for 96 yards against the Eagles.

I hope that unnamed source was wrong about Chatman. He showed real ability to gain yards after first contact, unlike Thomas Jones.

Only thing I can think of as far as Chatman goes is that perhaps his pass protection is horrible? I didn't really pay attention to it, but the guy seems to do everything else pretty damn well.

Yeah, he was coached by Cameron his entire NFL career to this point.

    Hopefully Cimini is right.

If that's the case though they should have at least kept Caulcrick to be the 3rd RB. He would have been an effective short yardage runner.

Wonder what the deal with the Chatman cut was..

also didn't think Poteat was going to be cut either.

I don't really mind this, Poteat was only average, and we have Lowery, Coleman, Barret, etc. for depth. As for Chatman, don't really mind him being let go either. He looked decent in the preseason against scrubs, and in reality he'll probably never see the field this season barring injury. If we ever need a 3rd RB we can pick one up off the streets at equal quality to Chatman.

Poteat is a little bit surprising, but he's definitely cuttable.

If I had to guess the Jets will go with 9 Offensive linemen and 4 or maybe even 5 tightends. The space had to come from somewhere.
