Last year I told people that even if Singletary showed up for the job interview completely naked I still would have chosen him over Mangini. Having said that, I'm not convinced he's a surefire winner, he wanted a chance and now he got it. A lot of ranters have come and gone in this league.
No, it really doesn't. Davis is supposed to be professional, and he's acting like a a kid at his job. Or maybe it does take guts... Anyway, Singletary might be a good HC iunno. I'm starting to think he's a little overhyped.
Jeez a good speech is all some people need. I like the guy but it takes more then words to win the game or turn a team around. BTW - Nolan beat the Seahawks earlier this year.
As a Head Coach? I couldn't dissagree more, Singletary will be lucky if he gets to come back next season at all. How many "Great Coachs" are there that you can name that pulled that crap in front of the Media? That's grandstanding B.S., if he want's his team to play better, then how about teaching better? How about preparing better game plans and getting his team ready to play before game day. You think the team will respect him for that? You think they will play harder for him? No cahance. Further more, where does he go from here, that was his first game, what does he do next week, shoot a player?? Sorry but throwing players under the bus to provide the media great sound bites isn't god coaching.
Right, cause we all know that good coaching is tantamount to understanding how to operate your sony camcorder and how to get all the great angles. :up:
Certainly it was the attitude you want from a coach, but this is the type of stuff all coaches love to say. It's easy to preach such fundamental life values, but it's just a long list of cliches thrown together unless it actually translates into something onto the field. It's easy for a coach to rail on and on about "playing with heart and passion" but at the end of the day it's all about play execution. You can have the most intelligent, hardworking, earnest group of guys on earth but if they can't make the plays it is moot.
20 seconds left, no timeouts, first and goal from the 3. 1st down: Run, no gain. 2nd down: spike 3rd down: run, game over He had that team playing there hearts out today. That sequence of play calling was poor, and may have cost them the game. Don't tell me that Martz called those plays because there's no way on gods green fuck earth Martz is calling that sequence of plays. The game was on the line, and he made a poor decision IMO. Singletary could become a good head coach but he needs to learn some things IMO. His emotions may be getting the best of him at this point.

There are definately miscommunications on the 9ers sideline. Shaun Hill was waiting to spike the ball and for some reason they were substituting players!!! They must have blown at least 15 seconds off the clock while 49er players were trying to get on and off the field. Also I think there was another miscue on a 4th and 1. I think Martz was telling the players to go for the 1st down, while Sigletary was telling the FG unit to get on the field. The announcer mentioned that the play clock was winding down again and that they needed to make a decision fast.
In his postgame news conference Singletary said WE thought there would be a cavity up the middle and that's why we called the play. Sounds like Martz was the guy who made the call.
I'm sure they both discussed it, but with the game on the line I would imagine final decision falls to the coach in that case. That was a pretty exciting game last night. Shaun Hill's helmetless first down was funny as hell. Kid did pretty good until the final 6 min of the game.
If that's the case then I blame Singletary more than I would blame Martz. As the head coach he should know his team is absolutely horrid running on the goal line or short yardage situations.
They would've had a TD on the first run if the down by contact rule wasn't so silly. Some guys hand brushes the back of Gores jersey and he stumbles before making it into the end zone and he's ruled down.
There's some Herm in there. Great motivator, "I played the game! You hit them in the mouth!", that kind of thing, but short on strategy and game management. Especially when you have old defensive guys trying to manage the offense and the clock. Guys like Belichick or Mangini might not scream "hit him in the mouth" but will devise a scheme to give the player a better chance to go and hit him in the mouth. Different ways of coaching.
